The winter had taken it's toll on Akuba's stocks. It was time to restock on whatever he could. The clouds had moved letting out the heat but revealing the naked sun in all it's bright and shinning glory. The chill ceased to bother him or Keii but it had always bothered the others in his herd. The showing of the sun amounted to being a good thing for the herd, they could get out more without freezing to death or slipping on ice.

The salt was especially running low, this was indeed quite terrible as it was used by his herd to spread on their usual routes and pathways. This in turn helped them patrol without slipping and it helped people pass through their lands safely and soundly, but because Keii was attending to her children he'd have to go it alone.

After a good trek he arrived at the beach with buckets ready. One carried in his mouth and two on each side hooked on a harness, it was something he invented to help him do the task alone. Timidly he approached the cold shores, the sand was already weaving into his fetlocks. He looked around, the beach stretched on for miles and he was almost certain he was alone but was still open to the fact that he might not be.

The soft ocean breeze picked up and the salty smell of the water filled her nostrils as she slowly woke up from her nap. Nalani slightly open her eyes and stared through the tall grass, watching the gentle waves crashing into the sandy shore. She lifted her head and flared her nostrils against the wind. Waking up on the beach always brought her comfort and happiness. This was her home since the day she was born.

Nalani tossed her mane as she stood up and made her way towards the sea. The fluttercorn mare kicked at the sand beneath her when she came to a stop near the edge of the shore. Not many soquili come down to the beach since most complain about the scents or their hooves getting stuck in the sand. She was used to it all and she loved every bit of it.

Akuba reguarded the tides, the thing he hated most about this was accidentally getting a mouthful of salty water. As he got closer to the body of water known to all as the sea his hooves started to sink in a quicksand like substance, there was a slight bit of suction behind it and when he life his hooves the sand no longer had a hoof print because it soon settled down and levelled itself off.

He wadded into the cold waters and dipped the bucket into the water. This was the only way to salt the paths, to keep people safe. Not many did this but he did it to help people and later he'd transfer it to another container, warm it up over a fire and let it evaporate. Akuba moved his face away from the waters before it had the chance to give him a salty slap to the face. He turned and didn't look forward as he was concentrating on keeping the contents of the buckets in.

Once he planted the bucket down he looked up and saw a mare not far away.
'A flutter?' He looked again, 'fluttercorn.'

(( Ack sorry for not responding sooner. I got sidetracked by life and the shop I just got hired at. ))

The mare lowered her head slowly as the site of a starfish caught her attention. It must have been washed ashore by the powerful waves. Nalani noticed it struggled to make it's way deeper into the water, but the waves continued to shove it back towards the sand. If she did not do anything the starfish would get stuck out of the sea and die under the blazing sun. She carefully picked it up with her mouth and made her way further into the water, once the mare was sure she was deep enough she dropped the starfish and watched it disappear beneath the waves.

Nalani tried jumping her way out onto the shore, making sure that her delicate wings didn't get wet. As she stepped out, something in the corner of her eye made her freeze in place. Someone or something was watching her. Without making it obvious, she ever so slowly turned her head in their direction. A warm blush rose to her cheeks after realizing that her watcher was a strange stallion. It was uncomfortable being looked at this way without her knowing someone had been there all this time.

Her long lion-like tail swung behind her as she stood nervously, staring at the newcomer. She cleared her throat and called out, "May I help you?"

((It's fine. cat_smile ))

The salty air invaded his nostrils and the water stung his eyes, and despite them watering now he concentrated on the flutter, but he tried not to appear frowny or rude. He saw that she was kind, or atleast appeared to care, he made a face as if to say yuck - she was brave.
He'd never want anything like that in his mouth.

And then she froze, Akuba's ears perked. He'd been spotted. His blush half puzzled her but also made him feel a little anxious. Maybe he'd made her feel embarrassed, but he hasn't been staring too long.

Akuba backed away, quickly glancing at her azure wings and then back to her face. He tried to stay confident, he shivered and it wasn't the water doing it, but he tried to ignore it,"that depends. Can you haul a bucket or two?"

He shifted position and put a full bucket on his harness and well above sea level, he hadn't gone too far and his feet still touched the ground. "I'm harvesting salt", he smiled weakly,"I don't much like people walking along unsafe icey paths in my territory. I want people to be safe and this is the closest place to find it."
