Name: K'dam Age: 34 Gender: Male Sexuality: Straight, but he and Luriath share a "hit it and fergit it" mentality when it comes to one nighters/flighters, so. Rank: Wingrider (barely) At what age did they Impress? 21
History: K'dam, formerly Kaderialam, was your average Weyrbrat for quite a long time. Perhaps sensing that her unborn son lacked ambition and motivation, his mother saddled him with a ridiculous name at birth. The only way out - Impress a dragon. Even so, it took quite a lot of prodding for the young Kaderialam to show up for Hatchings. Taking care of baby dragons wasn't mysterious to the Weyrbrat. It was hard work. You had to get all oily and dirty, and you had to wake up early in the morning. No thanks.
At the very last Hatching he attended (towering over most of the other Candidates), blue Luriath chose him. K'dam was relieved that he got to choose a new name, but he had mixed feelings about actually having a dragon to take care of. At least until he realized Luriath was perfectly happy to sleep in, and raked in girls like nobody's business.
Awesome.
The pair went through Weyrling training twice, but finally managed to squeak onto a Wing. Barely. They aren't the greatest Wingriders ever by any stretch of the imagination, but they manage to do their duties somewhat competently.
Appearance: K'dam is taller than average, with dark hair and eyes and tanned complexion. If his personality were a bit different, the girls would call him very handsome. If he had the confidence, arrogance, and dashing charm of, say, your basic bronzerider, then K'dam would make the ladies swoon. As it is he mostly exudes laziness and the boyish charm of the kind of boy that pulls girls' pigtails in elementary school and figures out how to make a bong out of an old soda can in junior high. He tends to attract girls that like "bad boys", but he's really not that bad, and they tend to leave with a feeling of mild disappointment rather than heartbreak. Personality: Let's start with the flaws: laziness is K'dam's number one flaw. He often has a bit of an annoying superiority complex, because he knows he could be awesome at things if he tried, but ... he never does try. He promises things with the best of intentions, and then forgets about them entirely. Or takes a nap instead, vowing to do it later. People tend to view K'dam as honest but not to be trusted with anything important due to his forgetful, lazy ways. They often don't take him seriously when he does make an effort to follow through, which frustrates him and leads to him not bothering the next time.
K'dam is also a bit weak-willed. He has a hard time saying no ... especially to anything that might possibly be even the tiniest bit fun. Wine? Yes please. I know I have practice tomorrow, but that's like five whole hours away. Gambling? Sure! Women? Other peoples' women with less-than-stellar reputations? Well, why not. Men? No. On second thought ... throw some booze in there and we'll see. This has led K'dam to problems with drinking and with relationships. He starts out relationships with good intentions, he really does, but he can't seem to stay faithful if there's alcohol and a willing woman within reach. Even if it's someone else's woman, which, much to the easygoing rider's dismay, has led to broken friendships. His lack of ability to refuse has also led him to be considered unreliable by many when he shows up late and hungover to practices. After being threatened with a boot back to Senior Weyrling, K'dam has tried to stop staying up late drinking. By drinking early. Oh, dumb K'dam.
Despite all this, K'dam is a good guy at heart. He loves his friends dearly. He wouldn't do any kind of chores for them, but he would jump in front of a feral wher for them. Life is too much fun to go around being a d**k, so K'dam never says a bad word about anyone and tries to think the best of people.
Although K'dam is terrible at fidelity, he genuinely cares about his women when he's in a relationship. He just ... sucks at being serious. He doesn't judge people based on appearance or reputation, and is quite happy to befriend even the oddest people in the Weyr.
Sometimes he wishes he had the motivation and energy to be a better person, but as he has grown older it seems harder and harder to bother with anything that isn't fun. This makes him sad, but at least he has Luriath and sweet sweet alcohol to cheer him up.
Dragon/Wher Name: Luriath Dragon/Wher Image: Here
Dragon/Wher Personality: Luriath is as sweet as sugar, but he is a lazy, lazy blue. The only time you'll see Luriath in action is during a green flight, when he suddenly becomes a dazzling streak of blue in the air. Luriath doesn't have a whole lot of interest in his duties, goals, or reputation, but he does have a definite interest in the finer things in life. Luriath has even ambitiously chased queens. Not very far, mind you, but he had to give it a go. The blue is extraordinarily fast when he puts his mind to it, but he does sometimes get outmaneuvered by greens that simply don't want such a loser of a dragon for a mate. Luriath maintains a good mood even so. He has never been overly disappointed by his failures.
Other than chase greens, Luriath doesn't have a whole lot of interests. He likes eating, napping, swimming, and playing with other peoples' firelizards (Luriath doesn't want K'dam to get his own firelizards ... then he would have to take care of them!). Basically anything easy and pleasant. Luriath goes through the paces in his Wing, but he's not very good in practice. He doesn't pay attention when things don't interest him, and although he isn't stupid, it takes a looong time to drill something into Luriath's head if he doesn't care about learning it.
Why this rider/handler? In K'dam, Luriath sensed someone that wouldn't push him where he didn't want to be pushed. K'dam wouldn't try to force him to be the best. Luriath liked that laziness, especially because it was tempered by K'dam's pleasant, easygoing personality. With K'dam, the blue could be assured of a human partner that would tolerate his own lack of ambition and would still be fond of him.
As to what benefits Luriath provides K'dam, that is questionable. Both parties would probably be better off if Luriath had chosen someone with drive, and K'dam had Impressed a dragonet with goals. But it is what it is. They are a sweet, good natured pair that nevertheless manages to frustrate everyone that cares for them with their apathy. Luriath always provides reassurance to his rider when K'dam is down, but his infectious cheerfulness also means that K'dam has never really taken a good, depressing look at himself and his life. In this sense, the blue dragon is a bit of an enabler.
