The wher at his side hadn't stopped talking since Bekar woke him up, but fortunately Bekar was good at tuning him out.

...all of the tunnelsnakes. I ate them good. Every one. And then all the pretty dragons said how handsome I was. And then I ...

It was late in the afternoon, getting along towards sunset. For once Bekar had some time to himself. Bekar hadn't been having the greatest time since the disaster of a Hatching. In fact, he had been having a pretty sharding awful time. The newly promoted Whermaster felt totally out of his depth in his new role. His Whersecond, at first helpful, had grown more and more domineering. He was fairly sure she thought she was the one in charge, and he didn't know what to do about it. J'aro, the one he usually turned to for advice, was busy wallowing in misery over the death of his dragon and didn't have time for Bekar any more.

The only one who had time for him, it seemed, was Beksk. The wher strolled along at his side, looking supremely satisfied. Belatedly, Bekar realized the wher had finally stopped talking about tunnelsnakes. "What's the matter with you?"

Beksk looked up at him, his eyes squinted against the dying sunlight. There's a pretty dragon. And also a human.

There was indeed a dragon and her human a little ways away. A young dragon, one Bekar thought he recognized from the Hatching. He normally wasn't the most social of people, but talking to the girl had to be better than listening to Beksk. He made his way over to the pair. "Afternoon!"

It is a bad rule Mairin, you shouldn't support it. Curith's eyes whirred an irritated amber colour as the young dragon bespoke her rider. The gentle green dragonet stared down at the golden firelizard hatchling that lay curled up asleep on the sand between her forelegs. It was for the sake of this nameless little queen and her future clutches that Curith's ire had been raised.

Mairin sighed softly and stared out at the choppy sea, watching as waves surged towards where she and Curith rested upon the shore. The energetic greenrider's feet were bare and stretched out before her with her toes dug down it's the damp sand. The remnants of the mighty surf washed over them as the waves reached land. The lukewarm water was refreshing and helped the young woman think though she longed for a proper swim.

"Curith there just isn't enough food for all of us and all of you and a million firelizards." As it was Mairin now boggled at the islands' ability to feed all the inhabitants they had, especially the dragons. It was one thing to be taught how much dragons eat when you're a candidate and another to witness it first hand.

Trying to explain this to Curith though was proving to be difficult for the dark haired teen. Stumbling upon a mostly destroyed Firelizard nest and retrieving the one undamaged egg had become a greater event than Mairin had expected. First, she had not expected the egg to contain a Gold of all things, shards, she hadn't even been sure the egg was still viable despite Curith's assurances. Secondly explaining to Curith the likelihood of why they'd found the nest in that condition had provoked a much stronger reaction than she'd anticipated. Curith was soft hearted but Mairin had assumed her bonded would do little more than mourn the lost and dote on the the little flit they'd acquired. A fierce condemnation of a practice necessary for everyone's survival was surprising.

I would eat less if I could! Aside from on the night of her hatching Curith's appetite had been as insatiable as nearly every other young dragon. She did not know how one could deny the hunger pangs for the sake of sharing but if she knew the little green would. The world seemed like such an unfair place and the young and idealistic Curith disapproved of that.

Mairin had been about to try another angle to sooth her bonded's concerns when she heard someone call out. Her head jerked up and the dimming light she could make out the approaching forms of the new Whermaster and his Wher. Instantly she waved and smiled, thankful to have been saved from the unending awkward conversation. "Good afternoon Whermaster. " Mairin wondered what had brought him down to the beach, a swim perhaps? Whatever the reason it meant having other to be with and Mairin was pretty much always in favour of company.
