I've discovered that there's two parts to cosplaying well; the costume and the self. Sure, the cosplay may not be the greatest, especially if you're a newcomer to the whole thing, but if you've got the role down, if you know how that character acts and what they would say, you've already got some of the best cosplayers beat, no contest. : L
Also, keep a good handle on your money, and if you're planning to buy stuff make sure you can actually carry it all.

If you're soldering, do it outside or in an open environment because even a slight inhalation will cause internal bleeding due to lead poisoning. And trust me it hurts like hell.

Here's another one:
Patterns are your friend. Whether you buy them or make them yourself, always be sure to draft a pattern for what you're making or else you might end up with a mess. X.x

Even if you think you're cosplay is fine and dandy and complete, ALWAYS carry a sewing box, ESPECIALLY if you're at a con. As Murphy's Law says, "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong".

Fidelis Noctua Even if you think you're cosplay is fine and dandy and complete, ALWAYS carry a sewing box, ESPECIALLY if you're at a con. As Murphy's Law says, "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong". excellent advice, might I also add always have double sided tape, UHU and safety pins as well.
