With the current situation with PIPA and SOPA (and just reading Nadira's thread) I thought I'd make a quick topic about Censorship.
So my friends, your thoughts?
I'm not going to play mediator or propose questions in this one. I'd rather let the conversation go whichever way it goes. That is why this OP is so bare. I'll propose questions if no one else will though.

I don't think there is a problem with how things are personally. If something is blatantly stealing copywritten material, it gets taken down. Megaupload/video actually took down a lot of this sort of content when it was informed of it, yet it still was brought down by the FBI without the help of SOPA/PIPA which proves further that we don't need to censor the internet. I was recently linked to a video with Bill Maher talking about it. He mentions the bill and how it was postponed, the crowd goes wild. He agreed, but then says he changed his stance on it once he realized how "pirates affected his profits" from a documentary made. In other words he only cared once he realized it affected him and he could get even more money if something like SOPA was in place (in stead of thinking that the documentary he made just wasn't interesting to people). His views then were just on "It is needed because people just want free stuff" instead of what the bills could potentially mean for free speech and the internet. Beyond SOPA and PIPA, I semi-support piracy to an extent. At least to the degree that the way it is happening, no one truly is hurt. People are still very wealthy in the entertainment industry and a few losses in sales isn't that much for them. It is something that has been around for ages without any real problems, cassettes and VHS tapes for example. The only reason it is a problem now is because of how widespread and noticeable the internet makes it and because the rich are always looking for a way to get that much richer. This clip from South Park sums up how pirating really affects those in the entertainment industry I think. Link to clip.

Though I figure SOPA/PIPA might have some small part to do with it though. Just my opinion, don't have any real information to back it up. So basically what it comes down to is money, correct? Yes, I realize that is an over generalization, but it does fit with the stance that the majority "informed" interneters have. Very true. My position is that I have no choice but to "pirate" as I have no other means available to me. Take for example Tokusatsu. TOEI indeed has a Youtube channel and does upload tokusatsu on a regular basis. However I can not watch non of it since its region locked. It is the same with music. How are we supposed to get wait we want if we don't have access to it? Personally I'd gladly pay a small fee so I could inturn watch my shows and then buy more of the product. But I cannot do that without pirating. I once (recently) suggested a massive database for all shows, music, and such that we could even be charged a fee to use. But that wont happen because as a friend said, there's to much money to be made individually. Nobody wants to cooporate and make it easier for everyone. (Will watch the link after I'm out of class. Currently listening to my instructor babble. >_< )

I had to go find the Gokiager Episodes by illegal means. I never would have started downloading it myself if I had options, like I did before SOPA. Now, if I want to enjoy something, I have to risk viruses and other crap, and put it on my computer.
It took me two hours to figure out where to find it. How lovely, right. Now, I can be called a criminal.

I believe someone said that or I'm thinking about another thread.

Copyrights were made to protect people's ideas from being stolen and that all they should do. Just as long as the owner gets create, that is all that matters.
Censorship is a topic I have less information on, but I think there should always be an original copy of everything in case someone wants to see the whole thing with no strings attach.

Censorship is a topic I have less information on, but I think there should always be an original copy of everything in case someone wants to see the whole thing with no strings attach. I actually own my own copyrights, and have gone through that process myself. I don't mind my work being out there, as long as I receive credit, or that the other party isn't making money off of my work. For this, I am not making money off of their work, and I don't claim to own any of it. I use it to watch the show, and then I move on. I understand where they are coming from to a degree, but censorship, as you pointed out, is a whole other topic. Yes, the internet is the next frontier, but censorship should not be. Great comment.
