Here is a NOAA article that explains why the Eastern United States is having a mild winter. The article is very informative and interesting!

Interesting. I live in BC so the map cuts off there but looks like we're in for more precipitation than normal with cooler temps. (Yay, more snow.)

I assume you mean British Columbia? They're getting warmer than usual weather from what I see.

[Kegan] I assume you mean British Columbia? They're getting warmer than usual weather from what I see. Yeah, I'm in BC. It is a bit warmer* now, but I read the map that long term it's going to be cooler with more precipitation? * A bunch of tourists unloaded from their limo in t-shirts, shorts and flip flops. It's not that warm. rofl

I live in southeastern Wisconsin and we just got our first snowfall that actually stuck this morning. Usually we have at least a foot of snow by now. But on years when we get our first snowfall really late in the year we end up having very wet springs and lots of snow in February and March. Hopefully its over a period of time instead of just massive snowstorms that dump 2 feet of snow on us overnight.

we're getting our first really cold night down here in florida. i find it interesting that the map says this year is around our normal temperatures while last year was colder. would definitely explain why it felt so much more frigid last winter. Had to cover the garden beds tonight. tomorrows only gonna have a high of 52°F, i might light up the fire pit to keep warm when i go to prune the apple trees tomorrow. I do hope this winter stays closer to normal, the last couple of winters hit our strawberry farmers real hard...

I saw on the weather today that a strong coldfront from the Gulf region is moving across the eastern US. It's interesting how quickly the weather and temperatures can change. 52°F would be a heat wave where I live. xd I think our high today was 14°F. We are use to it being cold though, so it is no big deal. We had nice weather all of Dec. Now mother nature is trying to catch up! Lol! We got a decent amount of snow today. It is supposed to snow tonight too.

I'm in New York, just a touch north of the city. It's been very mild here this winter, so much so that we've not had a lot of our winter bird migrants this year, with some species completely absent. We've even got Crocus sp. coming up already and lots of people are suffering from early allergies. Since this is only my first year of gardening, I'm not sure of our timeline quite yet. I'm hoping to get to the garden sometime this week.

iTz NaTuRe I had a nice warm winter, I enjoyed it very much. Warm winters are not good in my area. Because the lake and streams did not freeze over the bacteria, mosquito, and algal populations did not decrease as much as they usually do. This means that during the summer we are probably going to have higher mosquito populations, higher concentrations of bacteria, and algal blooms. Two weeks ago I hiked through a stream and there were thick mats of algae for miles. It is very unusual to see this much algae in the stream at this time of year. Also, because the lake did not freeze over, the peninsula in our area suffered from severe erosion. I would rather have a regular, cold winter than a warm winter and a bad summer.

See now I didn't know the was the affect of such a cause. I wouldn't necessarily go on a limb and say that it's going to be a bad summer though. High bacteria concentrations means that beaches at the peninsula may have to be closed more frequently over the summer. The peninsula in my area attracts many tourists. If the beaches are being closed more often less tourists will come. This means my city will be making less money. Also, algal blooms kill various aquatic organisms and they make it difficult for me to do my work in the stream I monitor. Also, some species of algae can be harmful to humans. Blue-green algae is a good example of this. Spraying for mosquitos may have to be done more often if the populations are high. People in my area are worried about diseases that they carry, such as the West Nile Virus. So to me high bacterial concentrations, algal blooms, and large mosquito populations equals a bad summer. They are also predicting very high temperatures for this summer and these high temperatures may lead to a drought. Only time will tell if this is true however.
