Me and my mum were thinking about getting my dad into a new hobby so once he retires he will have somethings to do and think about so he can stay alert. He needs a hobby that is; 1) Challenging 2) Requires the use of the brain more frequently 3) Maybe requires going out a bit 4) Does not need too much physical work that will strain the body or force anything like heart rate to rise. This is because my dad has alot of medical conditions and medications. 5) Will not clutter the house too much 6) Is engaing and interesting.
Though when suggesting ideas keep in mind that he is getting old, very old. Currently he's in his 60s and he has alot of medical problems such as Diabetes, there's somthing growing in his stomach which cannot be removed because his blood, as explained by the doctors; will explode if cut. When I was 5-6 I remember that he once went to the hospital- which I only recently found out was the he had a surgery for the heart I think.
So I need a suggestion for a new hobby that stimulates the brain so he does not get struck with dementia as quickly as my uncle, who, after retirement, did nothing much and had demntia. So, me and my mum want to keep my dad preoccupied so he doesn't get bored or do nothing at home.
Any suggestions on hobbies?

Identifying rocks and minerals? He could get a book, study it, and go out to shops and such and try and identify them. I would suggest rockhounding as that is much more interesting, but it involves going out and collecting samples from their natural environment.

Hmmm there are a few things. There's knife sharpening. It takes a good amount of time, isn't overly physically straining, you can go out a bit with the outdoor knives you sharpen, and requires use of the brain to try to maintain a good consistent angle when sharpening. There's also piano. Video games could be another one if he's up for it.

How about photography? He would need to learn the terminology and technical functions of a camera but other than that it's very much a non-strenuous hobby.
