Its happened to me before too. I'll come up with a basic concept for a short story, and before I know it, it's ballooned out of control and is several chapters long xD
But I get inspiration from everywhere. People places, experiences mundane and otherwise. I aim to make the mundane extraordinary, and read lots of adventurous stories to expand my imaginations. When it comes to writing fantasy, imagination is olne of the most important things. The original I'm writing now is fantasy, but I don't want to make it the archetypical, cliche'd high-fantasy everyone thinks of when they think of 'fantasy'. I aim to reshape the genre in my own way.
Because hey, why should the sky be the limit when people have been in space?
