Maetria looked around the snowy battlefield, she was not exactly at home in the body armour she had been given by the recruiter but at least she knew a bit about the laser gun she was wielding. Persuaded to join despite her lack of combat experience by the need to save the festive period for herself and fellow gaians alike and by a refusal to contemplate a future without cake.
There were more robots than she could easily count. Strangely menacing yet also comical in their rickety movements their numbers seemed to stretch away to the horizon.Many other gaians had already joined the fray and were bravely holding back the bizarre robotic hordes but there was a gap in the line and she could see a robot making its way unsteadily towards her.
Nervously she took aim. Much to her surprise the shot scored, knocking the robot further off balance and filing the air with the smell of scorched metal.
"Ha ha! take that sugar stealing fiend!" She cried.
As the smoke cleared a bit she could see the robot was still advancing but it was looking more comical and less menacing. Coloured wires poked out from the hole the laser beam had melted and there were scorch marks on the casing. More than that it seemed like the impact had knocked a screw loose for the robot's shambling walk had now been reduced to a clanking limp.

Buoyed by the success of her first shot Maetria went for a second slightly too fast and the shot went wide, greatly surprising a passing pigeon.
The robot seemed as unaware of this as it had been of the first shot and continued its limping advance.
Maetria took a couple of steps back but realised the robot wasn't going anywhere fast. She had plenty of time to aim carefully, or run should it become necessary.

Taking a more careful aim Maetria fired once more.
*click*
"Huh?"
The laser gun had failed to go off, Maetria tried couple more shots
*click* *click*
"Blasted thing!" she exclaimed "Power supply must be playing up again."
She scrabbled at the casing surrounding the very expensive power supply portion of the gun whilst backing away from the still advancing robot.
"Why do they have to make these so difficult to get in to?"

Having prised off the protective panel Maetria could see the complicated array of cells that powered the gun.
"Aha!"
A wire had come loose from the array. Working quickly and with one eye on the robot Maetria pulled a hair grip from her head and used it to gently poke the wire back into place.
"That should do it" She muttered to herself.
The robot had got considerably closer during this time and was starting to raise its axe, apparently in anticipation of the time it would shuffle close enough to Maetria to do any damage. Taking careful but rapid aim Maetria let off two shots both of which hit.
"Phew"
The robot was still standing but it was starting to look decidedly rickety. It would be only a matter of time before she finished this one off. Assuming nothing more went wrong.

The bot was still coming despite the damage it had taken, Maetria supposed that it was built so shoddily that maybe it was used to falling apart. She allowed the gun to charge up before firing off another shot. This one impacted dead centre on the robots chest blowing out all manner of wiring and knocking it backwards into a snowdrift!
Maetria suppressed the urge to do a little dance at having notched up her first kill, after all there were more urgent things to think of at the moment. Such as all the rest of the giant robot army bent on the destruction of all things sweet and delicious.

The next robot Maetria could see was a little distance away. Hefting her laser She set off towards it. Suddenly she felt something grab at her foot and the world went cold and white. She had snagged her foot on a tree root or something buried in the snow, that was no way to do any damage to to robot. Feeling quite sheepish she pulled herself out of the snow and shook the snow flakes out of her hair. Just as well the snow was so soft and powdery otherwise that might have hurt, as it was she was cold but all that was hurt was her pride.

Having pulled herself out of the snow drift Maetria was startled to find one of the horrible bots a lot closer than she had expected.
"Argh!"
She shouted firing slightly wildly at it. Astonishingly the shots connected and actually took part of its arm off. The twisted metal that had made up its limb landed in the snow with a slight hiss of steam. The robot did not appear to notice that it was half an arm lighter and lumbered on forwards with its axe raised menacingly.

Maetria was about to take another shot at the bot when she caught a whiff of something in the air. Something putrid and unwholesome. She looked around, puzzled and slightly nauseated, and found the source.
"Eurgh!"
Shuffling into view, beyond the beleaguered bot army, were vast hordes of zombies. Flesh falling off their bones and expressions of mindless aggression on their pallid faces.
The robot was hardly a threat with part of its arm hanging of and Maetria didn't think it would last long. These newcomers were a much more interesting challenge.
Wishing she had something by way of a battle cry she ran towards the first of the undead she could see, firing and yelling like she had seen people do in films. The shot connected but it didn't seem to make much impact on the grisly corpse sh had hit. She couldn't even make out a burn hole.

These soldiers of the despicable Zero were not particularly rapid either. Having fired at one quite a distance Maetria decided to wait until it got a bit closer. This took somewhat longer than she had anticipated, she passed the time by eating one of the energy bars she had brought with her. It was horrible.
Looking up she noticed the zombie had now reached a reasonable distance. She could hear the robot she had abandoned whirring sadly to itself behind her. Raising her gun she blasted away at the zombie. She felt the gun get warm in her hand and the snow around the zombie was melting a little but the wretched thing appeared to be only singed on the outside. It had not faltered at all and was still pretty much intact. Well as intact as a zombie ever is anyway.

Maetria sighted along the laser for another shot, thinking perhaps a shot to the head would slow this horror down. However as she pulled the trigger the gun gave a sad fizzle and dripped sparks. The loose connection was obviously playing up again.
"Why did I not bring a back up gun? Or just a better functioning gun?"
Maetria muttered to herself as she crouched down and started taking the gun apart again.
"Don't mind me"
She called to the zombie

Indeed the very same wire had come loose within the gun.
"I need a more permanent fix for this"
Maetria thought to herself.
"I can't be sitting down to take my gun apart every ten minutes, it's ridiculous!"
Sifting through her pockets she looked at what she had with her, a reciept for something she had bought at Ian's shop in Barton, some loose gold, a mysterious ring and... aha! a bit of fishing wire!. Working swiftly with half an eye on the shuffling moaning undead she tied the wire into place. There. That shouldn't be coming loose again any time soon. Now all I have to worry about is other surprising mishaps.
Taking a step back she fired two shots at the zombie, missing its head but hitting it squarely in the chest. The thing kept coming unperturbed but she felt better for having got a good solid hit in.
