She idled over to the mailbox and took out a handful of envelopes. "Market Listing Sold, Market Listing Sold" She read off the subjects on her envelopes, tossing them into the trash as she went. "Attention Gaians" She tossed it. "Market Listing - Hey wait!" She dug her hand into the can, pulling the last letter back out. "Real mail! Sofie, we got real mail!" She called to the cat. Then she quickly tore open the letter.
Dear Gaians,
I'm afraid that there are some complications this Christmas that may interfere with your original plans. Due to the fact that the town is being attacked by an army of robots bent on destroying every sweet on Gaia, Santa won't have the sugar power he needs to deliver gifts. So, seeing as there won't be any gifts, many of the typical Christmas activities will have to be cancelled. But please feel free to continue caroling and doing art for us. After all, there is more to Christmas than gifts, right?
Enjoy your holidays,
The Gaia Team
Jen stared at the letter for a moment, letting the silence of the room sink in. That was the odd thing about this letter - the silence. There is no army of robots attacking Gaia. If there was, there would be some freaking noise in here! She thought, walking to the door to check anyway.
As soon as she opened the door and looked out, she saw the army - just in her area were 20 or so robots going around, destroying bakeries and pastry stands - and even the cute little shop on the corner. Jen slammed the door shut, completely shocked by what she had just seen. But it was too late to deny now. Even after she closed the door, she could still hear the sounds of the battle raging on outside the walls. Such a strange place!
She ran back over and grabbed hold of the letter, reading it through again, with a more serious mentality. Destroy all the sweets on Gaia? Santa doesn't have the power to deliver gifts? Christmas without presents?? This is insane! Somebody has to do something! She thought, looking around frantically. Her eyes landed on the grey striped cat still lounging on the pillow, completely unaware of the chaos ensuing outside the door. She shook her head. No. She thought to herself, running to the closet. No, I have to do something!
She threw on some extra battle gear she'd just bought for her trip through Basken Lake and turned toward the door. Let's do this! She thought purely for effect. But just before she opened the door, she froze. What if she really did do this? What if she became known and someone recognized her? The enemy could come after Sofie and take her hostage - that's what they always did in the movies. This must be prevented. She turned back to the closet and slipped on a mask to hide her identity. She turned toward the door. Ok, NOW let's do this! She thought as she raced out the door, making sure to close it softly behind her so that Sofie could continue sleeping in the peaceful silence.
