About Rain

Generally rain is water falling in drops from vapor condensed in the atmosphere. Typically made up of fresh water, rain falls as precipitation from clouds. The falling drops of water are considered rain if they are larger than 0.02 inches in diameter. In forecasts, rain usually implies that it will fall steadily over a period of time.

This Rain egg was received by Lady Mist on February 11th, 2006.

Care of egg:
Keep it wet as possible until it hatches.

[About]

Name: Mist
Gender: Female
Age: 19
Personality: Mist is initially shy, however is easy to warm up to others. She has a do-it-yourself independent streak in her, but is usually easy going and is hard to fluster.
Life: Living alone in an apartment, Mist works as a freelance artist. The pay may not be steady or great, but she makes it by and enjoys what she does. A lot of the times she works right through meals, and at one point was quite malnourished. Of course, having a sugary thing floating along with a liquidy thing reminds one of food quite well.
Hobbies: Reading, sleeping, or working are perhaps Mist's favorite things to do. Once her sugary companion arrived, she found that she enjoyed spending more time doing things with them as well.

[In Comes Rain]

As Mist walked home from the store, she squinted at the blanketed sky above her. She always loved the touch of rain, as if there was some magical healing elixer held secret within those tiny drops. Most people hid from the rain, which Mist found to be a strange thing seeing as so many emotions resurfaced by the rain. There were the sad people who saw the rain as tears from the moon, there were the children who laughed in joy to dash about in the puddles it formed, or perhaps that romantic background to kiss under like in the movies. For Mist, it was simply a relaxing moment. Cleansing, refreshing, a change from the norm.

Ignoring the fact that she was completely soaked without an umbrella, Mist took her time walking home. The roads were silent without the busy traffic, and the pitter patter of the rain echoed gently through the streets. The darkness might give the impression of a gloomy time, yet it held an eerie beauty of it's own. Sure the rain was just some scientifically proven form of condensed vapor, but Mist liked to imagine it to be something more, like dancing fairies or sky diving freaks.

It was at that thought that Mist's foot caught under a loose root, one of those thin yet sturdy kind that creep up through the edge of the sidewalk. A loud "EEP!" announced her face's arrival to the ground, the bread and lettuce escaping from her bag.

"Ouch..." She groaned quietly, sitting upright and looking down at the front of her coat which might as well have become a puddle all in itself. Irritated, Mist sighed and scooped up her belongings, now in a rush to get home.

Her apartment was warm and welcoming, and, dripping, Mist took off her shoes and went to hang her coat up in the bathroom to air-dry. She came back to the table, looking and smiling at the strange red egg she had found some time ago. The grocery bag was wet, though it being plastic helped in keeping it in one piece. The contents inside also suffered the flood, though there was nothing that Mist was too worried about getting wet. She pulled out the lettuce and bread, but just as she was putting them into the fridge, a strange purple glow came from the folds of the lettuce. "Huh?"

She pulled just the first layer of the leafy green away, finding a strange, purple, rain-shaped ball snuggled there in the crease, shining gently like liquid kissing the face of the world.

Mist looked up at the red ball upon her table, then back at the purple one.

"This is..."

[As Rain Tends to Fall]

Following the initial surprise and awe of the newly awakened creature, Mist found herself faced with a rather complicated dilemma. Not only was the strange water creature small, but she was also agonizingly shy.

As Mist walked into the kitchen, the droplet squeaked in surprise and fell into the toaster. As the wind rattled the window, the watery creature slipped down the heater vent. Now that was a strange task to set about fixing.

It was perhaps a few days later until the purple swirl became used to Mist's presence, and even later until she became used to all the strange noises. Mist found herself wondering if the small droplet was really just a ball of instinct and emotion, and she grew comfortable with the idea. It was just like taking care of a pet.

Until, of course, that illusion came crashing down. As Mist dropped the keys onto the table, their metalic forms clashing against one another, she realized that there was no sudden wail. Where had the strange droplet gone this time? Mist felt herself suddenly overly conscious of the blob--Where did it go? Was it okay? Her apartment was small and cozy, but for a thing of that size, the livingroom alone might as well have been an entire universe.

It was then that Mist realized that she heard the sounds of her television set. She hadn't realized that she had left it on, but she went into her room to check none the less. And there, in a glass of water left out earlier in front of the TV, swam the little water droplet.

"Sumi, sumi, sumi." The thing repeated over and over, swirling in circles as it's small wings guided it forth. It was strange to hear it speak something other then a cry of alarm, and Mist couldn't help but stare at it. Her eyes swept over to the television, and it suddenly dawned on her that the creature's "sumi" was actually "swim", for there on the flickering screen was the race to the finish line in a swimming pool.

Mist cleared her throat, causing the droplet to shiver in alarm and flutter chaotically and clumsily out of the cup, drifting to the table to dash behind the glass. Mist found that she was chastizing herself. How could she not know the thing would be intelligent? Conscious of it's surroundings? She shook her head, realizing that still she called the droplet a "thing".

"Sumi," Mist called out, and the droplet peered out at her, "How about I call you Sumi?" The purple droplet tilted to the side, almost as if to give the appearance of a quizzical expression, before slowly gliding out and following Mist's gentle tone. Mist sat on the bed, her palm held face-up where Sumi settled comfortably. "This is a hand," Mist began, and Sumi looked down at it in a new sort of wonder.
