I bought Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother at the same time, and of the two, I was more impressed with Atom Heart Mother. I am a die hard Pink Floyd fan, but Ummagumma didn't really do it for me. Atom Heart Mother, in my opinion is one of the greatest Floyd albums out there. I was already amazed by the end of the first track, the title song. The three, relatively shorter songs "If", "Summer '68" and "Fat Old Sun" are fantastic as well, and "Alans Psychodellic Breakfast" seems like a brilliant way to end the CD.
Ummagumma has it's gems too. "Grantchester Meadows", "The Narrow Way", and the ever-popular "Several species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a pict" are simply awesome, though I didn't care much for "Sysyphus" and "The Viziers Garden Party". And the live songs sound great too. Especially "Carefull with that axe, Eugene".
If you want my opinion, buy "Atom Heart Mother" first.
