I have been in band for almost 7 years and I've played the flute. Our school has a jazz band and they generally don't let flutes play in it. So, I've decided to learn the trumpet. I'm doing pretty well (I managed to memorize the full concert B-flat scale in 30 minutes. Its not perfect but its memorized smile My problem at the moment is that the sound is a bit muffled and when I try to play high notes the notes are garbled and it switches between octaves. I need advice on how to keep a steady tone and tips on getting the high notes to come out right... and any other advice you may want to give me. (please no comments about how Im an idiot. Im learning this on my own so cut me some slack.)

You have to feel it in your mind to play a note. You can't just rely on your fingers to do everything. When you play higher notes, don't put so much air into it. Hope it helped? xP

I would like to say I am impressed. For high notes, push your air down. Like aim the air to the bottom for the cup in the mouth piece. (sorry if im not making much sense)

Also when you get to the high notes, consider making more of a "ti" sound rather than a "tuh" sound. Also remember to keep the flow of air moving through the horn ^_^

I caution you, it is highly recommended that flutes don't even come near a trumpet. (By professors and professional players, not band directors.) The embouchure required for trumpet so different from flute. It may cause you not to be able to play flute any more.
If you can successfully play both, more power to you. I just want you to know some cons that may become present.

But actually somehow since I've started with the trumpet my flute playing has gotten better. I don't know if its the stronger facial muscles or what but my tone has gotten clearer. I'm just strange I guess... smile

Well, hopefully it doesn't interfere with my flute later on. I'm trying to learn the trumpet in a year though and get well enough to be in jazz band. My director tried to get me to play sax but he kept nagging me about it so I got irritated and said I'd try trumpet. I've always liked trumpet anyway so I thought I might as well stick with it. I'm probably setting too high of standards with myself but it never hurts to try!

Another tip for playing high notes at first try to play them as soft as you can while still being able to play them and remember to support your air using your stomach when you breath in let your stomach fall it allows more air to go into your lungs
