Howl had always wanted Kali to meet Sophie, ever since he had met his friend at his birthday party. Now that he and Sophie were living together, he had a chance. He picked up the phone and dialed Kali's phone number, glancing around the small living room. It was definitely a lot cleaner since Sophie'd moved in. He hoped Kali would feel comfortable coming over.
"Hey, Kali?" he sounded happy. Whole. That was a switch from the last time he'd called his red-headed mage friend. Last time, he had thought Sophie had died, and had asked Kali to come. "Want to come over? I'll make hot chocolate. I've got a surprise for you. And for the baby too." He practically beamed into the phone before hanging up.
"Sophie, Kali's coming over!"

"Kali?" Sophie looked up from where she was washing dishes, blinking confusedly in the direction her husband's voice had come from. It took a moment to remember who that was, although she couldn't believe it took so long to do so. Kali. The girl who had been dating...no. The girl who her father had said Howl had been dating.
"Alright.." She called, hoping her nervousness didn't leak into her words. She had no reason to be nervous, anyhow. She just had to apologize, and things would be fine. She shouldn't have made assumptions without checking them first, and she knew that.
So why was she nervous? She scrubbed the dishes with renewed fervor, eyebrows furrowed. What was wrong? She had never met the girl before; perhaps it was just anxiety over meeting a new person. But, the more she scrubbed a plate that didn't need it, the more the nagging voice in the back of her head bothered her.
Part of her was worried, she knew deep down. Worried that there had been a basis for her father's assumptions; and, perhaps, a bit hopeful. She didn't really want to think that Adrian would lie to her...But, even more, she didn't want to think that Howl would have done anything with this...woman.
She trusted him, she reminded herself. She trusted Howl, and so, she should trust his friends. Oh, but he did have that effect on women... She just scowled, and scrubbed the dish harder.
~*~
Kali stared at the phone when the line went dead, not quite sure what to make of it. Howl was being...strange, again. Of course, that was nothing odd for the eccentric wizard, but that wasn't the point right now. The point right now was that he really hadn't given Kali much of a choice about whether she was going to come over, or not; especially since he wouldn't answer the phone when she called him back. Groaning, she flipped the book shut that she had been reading and got up to put some actual clothes on, having spent the entirety of her day lounging about in pyjama pants and a sweatshirt. When she stood, though, she frowned. She had no reason to get dressed. She wasn't out to impress Howl, and it wasn't as if he hadn't seen her in them before. He did have that problem of appearing in her room. So, she shrugged, heading down the stairs to the door.
"Uncle Viktor, I'm going to Howl's for a bit. He says he has a surprise for the baby, or...something." She opened the door and heard a rushed scuffling behind her before her uncle popped his head out from the other room. He was frowning - he didn't particularly approve of the boy called Howl...but, he at least had not knocked his niece up, so he ranked slightly lower than Lance on the 'boys who were not allowed' scale. "Do you have to go?" he asked, a bit sulkily for a man his age. Kali tried very hard not to roll her eyes. "Well, yeah. I said I would." Sort of. She supposed Howl thought she did, or..something. Whatever, so she was lying. Her uncle didn't care, or didn't know, as he sighed and grabbed the keys. "I'll drive you." He said, taking his coat off of the rack by the door as well. She beamed at him and nodded, hopping into the front seat of his SUV.
They got there much faster than if she had walked, but not quite as fast as if she had used magic. The ban on it was still very much in place, as she didn't want to harm the baby; James, she was calling him, hoping it was a boy. The doctor hadn't confirmed it yet, and although she trusted Howl's words, she wanted to be sure with science as well as magic.
Waving as she left the car, she made her way up to the door of the castle, which seemed much less gloomy than she remembered. Perhaps it was the lack of dark black smoke rising out of the chimney. It almost seemed as if it was cleaner...but, no. That was impossible. Howl never cleaned.
Still trying to figure it out, she knocked on the door and waited for him to enter. Unlike Howl, she had a few moral issues with barging into someone's house without invitation. Even if she had been invited over. ...It made sense. Really.

"Yes," Howl said, blinking at his wife. "I have something for the baby, and I thought she might like it." He lifted the carefully wrapped box up to show her. Something inside it was growling and snarling, but he didn't seem to have worried about breathing holes. Perhaps that was whatever Howl had put in the box's problem.
"Sophie dear, are you alright?" Howl was concerned. He set the box down onto the table, and muttered a few words so it fell silent. "She won't be going into the kitchen, you know. Unless Puff decides to dye someone's hair..." He paused before grinning. "She's coming now," he said.
Sure enough, Kali's knock had sounded. Howl opened the door and positively beamed at her. "Kali!" he said delightedly. "There's someone I want you to meet, come on. She's in the kitchen now, cleaning--and your surprise is on the table. It's the big box, by the way. The little one's for Lance. Tell him not to use it too often, or it'll wear out. Otherwise, it should last him a few years."
He took her hand and led her inside. "Come on! She's excited to finally meet you. I've told her all about us. Sophie! Sophie, Kali's here."

"I'm fine, Howl." Sophie lied, looking back at him. "I just wish you'd give me more warning before people come over - the castle's hardly presentable....Broom!" She snapped, the object in the closet snapping to attention instantly. "This floor is deplorable. Be a good broom and sweep up the entryway. And the livingroom!" The kitchen, she decided, would wait. It wasn't like the girl was going to be coming into it.
She scrubbed the dishes with determination, abandoning the very-much-already-clean plate in favour of those remaining in the sink. The broom, meanwhile, scuttled off to do it's job.
A knock jerked her out of her intense focus, and she whirled, looking in the direction of the door as Howl bounded out of the room to answer it. The girl sounded nice enough as she responded to Howl...but maybe too nice? No, that was definitely not it.
"Hey, Howl-"
As expected, she was cut off by Howl's ecstatic babbling, and she stared mutely at him until he finished. When he did, she grinned, stepping after him into the house.
"What, everyone gets a gift except me? Geez, Howl, I'm starting to feel unloved."
Sophie's hands clenched at that statement, squeezing all of the water out of her sponge and onto the floor. Well, more on her feet than the floor, and she cursed, shaking them to dry them and grabbing at a nearby tea towel to dry it up. Unloved? Meaning she had felt love? "Stop it, you mad hatter." She muttered to herself, scrubbing at the spot on the floor until it was dry. "You're just being silly."
Kali followed Howl, or rather, allowed herself to be dragged around the castle and into the kitchen by Howl. What she found was a rather red-faced Sophie, although whether it was anger or embarrassment she really wasn't sure. Probably anger, she decided, noting the scathing glare the silver haired girl was unleashing upon Howl.
'Not in the kitchen! Oh, no, of course she won't be in the kitchen!' Sophie thought angrily, hoping that Howl could feel just how much she was mad at him right now. "Oh, how lovely." She said, not sounding happy in the slightest. "She's here. In the KITCHEN." She pointed with her hand, suds flying off as she gestured to the sink that was still full of dirty water and dishes. "Very nice Howl. Thank you, really!"
The sarcasm was palpable.
Kali couldn't help but glare when she saw Sophie, and it didn't get any better when she heard her speak. She hadn't met her yet, but she was not on Kali's favourite people list. What with accusing her of sleeping around on Lance with Howl and all; it wasn't something that Kali appreciated overmuch, nor did she approve. Lies from her father or not - she currently held the opinion that Sophie was a vapid b***h, and she frowned deeper as she crossed her hands above her slightly bulging stomach.
"I can leave, if I'm not wanted." She sniffed, tossing her head and taking a step back toward the door. "Don't mind me. I know the way out."

Howl didn't know what all the fuss was about. Kali had been in the castle several times, and it had always been a mess. Why would she suddenly start caring now? And why was Sophie so worried about what the castle looked like? Women.
"I didn't forget you!" Howl insisted, pulling a medium sized box out of his jacket pocket. "Here," he said. "It was supposed to be a surprise, but--it's a box of wishes. You know, for you and Lance to make together. It won't work if only one of you makes the wish. And it can't hurt anyone. If you wish that someone'd die or something, it's not going to work." The wizard certainly seemed quick enough to reassure Kali that she was, in fact, loved. Even if he knew she was teasing.
Howl spotted Sophie and seemed to freeze in his tracks. "Let's--go to the living room," he suggested, glancing at Kali. "She's rather frightening when angry. Don't know what the fuss is about, really! You've been here plenty of times, and the mess never bothered you." He frowned at Sophie, and let go of Kali's hand. "She's not upset with you," he explained. "She's mad at me. You're always more than welcome here, Kali. You know that."
Honestly, Sophie wasn't even trying to be friendly! "Anyway. Kali, you've already met Sophie. Sophie, meet Kali. And do try to be nicer, won't you?"

Kali turned and looked at Sophie suspiciously, pausing slightly in her attempt to storm out of the castle. The stitch witch sighed and scowled, looking away and toward her sink filled with dishes. "Yes. It's Howl. Please, feel free to make yourself at home..." God above, did she ever hate apologizing.
Kali frowned at her, then finished her spin on heel. "Fine. The living room, then." She said, still a bit snarky. However, this didn't stop her from smiling as she looked over at the box that Howl had produced. It was adorable, and she appreciated it. Howl was...well, he was good at gifts. Which raised her curiosity as to what the other two were. What could he have gotten Lance? And, what did he have for James...?
She moved to the kitchen and dropped down onto the couch, preferring to think of that as opposed to how much she disliked Sophie.
"So, Howl. What's this gift you said you had for the baby?" Kali asked suddenly, distracting herself and looking over at her friend.
Sophie, meanwhile, scowled at Howl as he left. "Fine." She agreed. She would 'be nicer'. But as soon as that girl was gone, Howl was in so much trouble!
As she turned back to the dishes she realized she had more important things to do than them, and barked a brisk order to them. The sponge shot into action more than willingly, and the dishes managed to not break themselves, for once. That taken care of, she turned around and rummaged for the kettle, knowing Howl would forget. Whether they were having tea, or hot chocolate, something had to be made for their guest. Of course, she thought as she filled it with water, Howl would probably just summon water. Whatever. She liked being busy. She needed to be busy.
She set the kettle on the stove and once more missed Calcifer's hearth for cooking. The electric stoves were handy, but she was better at cooking with fire. It was how she'd been taught, after all.
"Just get nice and hot, quickly." She told it, turning it on. "I don't want to wait forever for you to boil."

Howl knew his wife well enough to know he would be in trouble the moment Kali left. So he planned to follow Kali home, when she did leave, so Sophie would forget her anger with him. Or maybe he would attempt to have Kali stay the night--maybe Sophie would calm down afterward. "She's always mad at me," he confided in his friend. "She's been pickier than ever about the housekeeping. I do hope she doesn't take it out on you."
"Oh! He's going to love it Kali," the wizard beamed, taking the rather large, brightly colored box from the table. "Here, open it. You'll see." The box had stopped growling, but now a soft snoring sound was coming from within. "It's nothing alive," he added quickly, with a grin. "It's actually... er. A stuffed animal. You'll see! I enchanted it myself. It's the child safe kind, really. It can't breathe fire. Open it!"
What Kali would find, when she opened it, was a rather harmless looking green stuffed dragon. It had velvety purple wings and a yellow stomach. It might have been bought locally. The only thing that really made it different from the ones undoubtedly sitting in the nearest toystore was that it was breathing. Slow, content, breathing. The dragon was asleep, curled up like a small cat.
He briefly wandered into the kitchen to kiss Sophie's cheek. "Love, calm down," he gently instructed. "If the water gets too hot, it'll melt the kettle. You never do anything by halves."

Sophie had been staring at the kettle, and didn't hear Howl when he came in. When his lips brushed her cheek, she squeaked, and jumped, going in time with the enthusiastic whistle of the kettle. "Oh! H-howl, you...surprised me..." She reached over and pulled the kettle off the burner, not responding to his comment. "Oh, pish posh. I won't melt it." She huffed, setting it aside. "That was only a one time thing!" Or more. She wasn't counting. She set it down with a bit more force than she'd intended, Water splashed out onto the stove top and she jerked her hand away before it could splash and burn her. "So what happened to 'She won't be in the kitchen'?" She asked, unable to wait until Kali was gone. To her credit, she was whispering. Well, more like hissing, but it was better than yelling.
Kali didn't notice anyhow as she pulled the box open, expecting something...well, not alive. When she saw the dragon, she initially thought that it was an adorable toy, and that any child would love it. Further inspection, however, showed her that it was breathing. This threw her for a loop. She knew Howl had said it was enchanted, but...
"Howl!!" She couldn't help but call, a nervous tone entering her voice. "What...what is this??!"
Sophie turned to look in the direction of Kali's voice, then whipped back around to look at her husband. "What did you do now, Howl??" She accused, fists on her hips. "Is it not bad enough that you're terrorizing me, now you're tormenting her with gag gifts? What is in that box anyways?"

"I'm sorry, Sophie," Howl apologized quickly, in hopes of avoiding his impending doom. "I was simply excited for her to meet you. I've told her all about you, and how much I love you, and what you're like. I forgot." One arm curled around Sophie's waist, and he placed another kiss on her cheek. "I love you," he said. "Now, forgive me?"
He was startled when Kali called his name. He poked his head out of the kitchen. "It's a dragon," he explained. "Child safe version," he added. "Does everything but breathe fire, and only on command. It listens to you and--will listen to James, when he's born and old enough to know how to control it. I thought you'd like it."
He turned and crossed his arms, frowning at Sophie. "I don't terrorize you," he said, rather defensively. For a moment, an expression of genuine hurt crossed his face. He was still recovering from the period of time Sophie'd been gadding off as Tara. "And I don't torment my friends. It's not a gag gift. It's the same thing I gave Morgan on his birthday," he huffed at her. "If you're so unhappy here, you would have stayed as that ugly...pink haired thing!" He left the kitchen to sulk next to Kali.
"So cruel..." he was muttering. "Always so cruel."

"Maybe." Sophie replied, taking down tea and hot chocolate mix and setting it on a tray while Howl was busy telling his...friend, all about what he'd given her baby. Cream, sugar, and mini marshmallows followed - like Howl had said, she never did anything by halves. As she poured the hot water from the kettle to the teapot, she muttered to it quietly. "Now don't you go getting cold. Stay boiled and hot, you hear me?" She paused, her eyes flicking back toward Howl for a moment. "And...and don't you dare melt!" She told the teapot, before setting it's lid on and nodding.
"Child...safe." Kali said, peering further into the box at the sleeping toy. She wasn't so sure, but...well, it couldn't really breathe fire, and she supposed the worst that could possibly happen was it suffocating James. Which was still pretty bad, but if it obeyed her, she could just make sure it didn't. It was a very sweet gift, all in all, and she giggled when she was assured that it would not harm the baby. "Oh...it's so cute." She cooed, tentatively reaching one arm in and running her hand over the creature's back. "Hey there, little one...wakey wakey...."
The dragon twitched, and rolled onto it's back, little button eyes opening and peering out at the one who was talking to it. When it saw her, it blinked, then made a sort of purring noise and arched it's belly toward her hand. She giggled, tickling the yellow fabric much to it's apparent pleasure. It wasn't just cute, she thought - it was adorable.
"Oh, Howl, don't be like tha-" Sophie started, her cheeks flushing as she realized that he wasn't just exaggerating and being a suck. He was still hurt over the whole Tara thing... As he stormed away, she sighed, and grabbed the tray to hurry after him.
Kali looked up as Howl came in and noted two things. One, he was sulking - and two, he was probably close to having a tantrum. She hated tantrums. With a passion. Not because she couldn't deal with them, but because she deeply disliked the slime that usually came with them. The solution, she decided, was to distract him from whatever was bothering him.
"Howl, this is adorable!" She giggled, by now having moved the dragon from the box and onto her lap. It was only too happy to be there, lounging on it's back and letting her rub it's belly. "Thank you so much." She smiled, leaning up to kiss Howl's sulky cheek - thankfully, slime free. "It's wonderful. I'm sure the baby will love it."

Howl ignored Sophie pointedly. He could be that way if he wanted! It was his castle. Why did he even bother? It was clear Sophie was unhappy with him. She was bound to leave. Perhaps she would pretend to die again, and disguise herself as another girl. Those thoughts made it worse.
He'd lost her once. He really wasn't looking forward to losing her again. He didn't know what would happen, if he lost her again. Dark shadows started slowly climbing the walls.
He was distracted from what would have been a tantrum by Kali's voice. Adorable? Kali liked the present? His expression went from tragic to beaming in an instant. "Of course it is," he agreed. "You really like it?" he asked. "I thought the baby would. Lance'll like his present too," he added conversationally. "Inspiration. To help him write. You said he wrote songs, so--" Howl had recently discovered that he quite liked Lance; he felt he owed the older man something.

Sophie was surprised at how easily the other girl handled Howl's tantrums. That is, if she had known that Howl was about to tantrum; and, if she knew Howl at all, surely she had known. Carefully, she set the tray down and set the saucers and cups down on the coffee table, preparing the drinks in relative silence. But, close to Howl. As she worked, she made a point of brushing against him, looking at him out of the corner of her eye occasionally.
"I do love it." Kali said, stroking the dragon's chin. Then, she frowned, and raised an eyebrow at Howl. "Since when were you nice to Lance, Howl?" She giggled, shaking her head. "Not that I'm complaining. It's...nice, that you're getting along."

Howl noticed Sophie's silence and closeness. He put an arm around her waist as she brushed against him. He seemed to have forgiven her for upsetting him. He kissed her cheek. "Be friendly?" he suggested. "She's family."
He looked to Kali and smiled. "Good. I was hoping you would. He's enchanted to listen only to you and the baby. But I can adjust that if you want it to obey Lance. It wouldn't attack him, or anything." He paused and pretended to look thoughtful. "He hasn't told you?" He was genuinely surprised. "He saved my life." He wouldn't go into details. Kali didn't need that stress. Neither did Sophie. "Let's say he prevented me from doing something I would have regretted had I been in my right mind." Oh, he hadn't been suicidal; but what he'd been attempting to do had been close enough to it.
