One of our clarinet players switched to horn last year for marching. He isn't half bad at it, and it wasn't too hard for him to start off. It took a bit of work, but he did manage to get to a good level.(Better then the horn player the year before he switched) So i say, just go for it. If your bd says no, don't take it personally. It probably just means that your band is more in need of clarients then horns at the moment, or that you are good enough on clarinet that he doesn't want to lose you on that instrument. (Our clari sl became sl beause she told our bd that she wanted to switch to bari sax if she didnt get sl, because sl was the only thing holding her back from it.)
Thank you for answering, and we don't have any horn players at all and I'm now 3rd clarinet last chair due to my lack of bringing a breathing tube to class and a scale test I hadn't realized we needed to do an arpeggio on. So I'm going to talk to him about it tomorrow morning. Thank you a ton for the input though (:
