'Her orders were short, concise. She won't miss.' That thought alone allowed the lieutenant to turn his back on the opponent. "Kaisho, if I was going to deceive you, would I really be thick enough leave you standing there?" His words fell around them like a hammer striking an anvil. Even though he was speaking truthfully there was an air about him that left his statement open; partly innocent and partly a threat. "The better question, Kaisho, is if you're doubting his ability now while he's surrounded by friends, how can you begin to believe that he'll live through a battle when the combatants are really trying to kill him?" With eyes that mirrored glacier ice the Grecian man moved to stand directly in front of the seventh division Captain. "So what will it be, Sir? Do you want to help us and end this quickly, or do you have the stomach to stand by and watch your friend beaten black and blue?" Of course there was always the chance the Captain would put up arms against them, but if it came to that than he was positive Kowabi could take care of him with ease. "Tell me just how long you are willing to watch Zaine struggle against us all." The entire time he spoke he kept his interest spread to encompass the entirety of the battle.

"Thank you, Kowabi." He called dryly as he turned and began to stride back to the newest nineth division head. "Remind me never to get on your bad side, will you?" A hollow laugh escaped his lips, devoid of even the most remote sense of humor or joy. The ancient vaizard scared him to his core. Everything about her from her neon orange eyes set in her deep ebony skin, to her ability to make her monstrous reiatsu little more than a flicker set him on edge. To make matters worse, he was the one currently responsible for her employment. Fefnir had, for the time, handed over the reigns and with them the fear of her wrath.

Now only a few feet from the bound Captain, Lerato stopped and crossed his arms over his chest. "These lengths?" He repeated while cocking an eyebrow. "Zaine these lengths are taken to speed the process and to prove to me, and all the members of the Gotei, that you are capable of fighting on even footing with our enemies when the time comes. Confidence has nothing to do with it." He retorted as he shook his head from side to side. Sure, he probably could have forced his friend into calling upon his bankai at some point, but by then they would both likely need an extensive stay in the fourth division. "You should be glad I've arranged this..." he motioned to the people around them, "for you. You're safe here so long as you hurry up and prove yourself, but if you continue to be as stubborn as you are we'll be forced to knock some sense into you." He growled. Part of him wanted to reach forward and ring the man's neck for speaking to him as he did; as if his control over Kowabi was a gift to hide behind instead of a curse that could just as easily take off his own hand as it could take off Zaine's. 'If only he realized... He wouldn't have declined the vaizards help either. Not with the Red Man's prodding, and I sure as hell wasn't going to argue and turn her against me through a simple misunderstanding.'

"You want to see what I've got?" The realization made the corners of his mouth turn up into a grin. He had almost forgotten that no one had seen his release since the training session with his Captain. "Fine. Kowabi, release him." He spoke the command to the vaizard more loudly and briefly wondered whether she would be annoyed with the quickness that he called the bakudou off. If Zaine wanted to see what Lerato brought to the mix he would show him. The Grecian man drew his blade with a single quick movement and, in another, brought it to rest across both his palms. "Rage, My Queen." The sudden flux of static energy and reiatsu shook the ground around him, dust motes swirling in a torrent of invisible currents as they all arranged by polarity and began a steady course towards him. Bright neon blue energy danced around him, jumping across his skin as his zanpukatou shifted from a katana to two trench knives, the left a half inch longer than the right. "Well?" He asked with palms still facing the sky, the energy swirling around him finally dying down until it was a small but constant pull on his surroundings. He could already feel the power of the release coursing through his system.

Zeb sighed as he saw the pillar below him, and felt the density of the air above him increase. "It's still too early for you Zaine…" Zeb raised his blade above his head with his right arm, and with his left arm he gathered reiatsu. Shaping that energy into a long, thin blade he recited his incantation "Ye lord. Mask of blood and flesh, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man." he spoke the words evenly as he closed his eyes and a large ball of fire and energy built within his hands. It rapidly expanded to the size of a beach ball, and then it shrank just as quickly to the size of a softball. "Inferno and pandemonium, the sea barrier surges, march on to the south. Hadou #31, Shot of Red Fire!" He added at the end with an evil grin "Flamstel Special."

Firing the kidou into the Gale that Lerato had re-directed at him, he matched the power so that both would cancel out perfectly. Following that he allowed the pillar to reach him with his knees bent, so that the power would not crush him, but would rather have the inertial energy dissipated through his body. "Zaine, your rash over-use of long range attacks will be the end of you… You seem to act that your reiatsu is limitless, but in actuality, you're going to quickly be pushed back." Zebediah scolded him softly as the impact wave of the two blades hit him and bruised both of his shoulders.

It was then that he felt the shikai released. The smell of ozone was strong in the air as energy cackled across the area. "And with that… I believe that you have no chance." He lowered his arms to his side, as he looked up at Zaine with a look of disinterest. "Check and mate…" He jumped down and away from the obviously mental captain, and the obviously dangerous situation that was about to happen with the 1st Squad's Fukotaichou.

Lerato’s words fell like thunder to his ears. The initial retort left Kaisho wondering, his mind pondering the numerous responses the Seventh Division Captain could choose from. The question coming straight after, however, rang in his ears for a while, drowning out the responses he had prepared in his mind. In a way, Kaisho was indeed undermining his fellow Captain’s ability in combat, despite the apparent fact that they were all Zaine’s friends. However, looking at the situation, Kaisho was not prepared to rule his earlier hypothesis... at least, not for the time being. There was definitely method to the madness of pitting two Lieutenants, one Captain and one Vaizard against a lone Captain in search of Bankai, in the sense that applying such high pressure to Zaine would be an effective catalyst. The problem Kaisho had with this was that Zaine would have to put his life at risk to do it, and for that it needed opponents with enough strength and killing intent to bring forth that mindset.

As Lerato posed Kaisho one final question, this time staring at him directly from the front with his entire body in line with the Captain’s, Kaisho was still in deepening thought. The First Division Lieutenant’s voice sounded like undertones accompanying the inharmonious tones of his thoughts. Kaisho’s thoughts were swiftly turning to the links between Zaine having to accept that he was risking his life to achieve Bankai, and how it fitted nicely in his thesis that this initiation was nothing more than an elaborate assassination, thought of by one of Zaine’s closest comrades. It was obvious that Lerato’s plan was for everyone involved to not hold back on Zaine, Kaisho was even contemplating that Lerato was encouraging all members involved to attack as though they were trying to kill him. However, with this many people attacking at once, giving consideration to each of their talents, it left the door open for a convenient ‘accident’ to occur resulting in Zaine’s death.

Kaisho’s train of thought came to a conclusion, just as he noticed Zaine enveloped in a number of high level Bakudou performed by Kowabi. Despite his defence against Lerato’s attack, he could not escape the techniques that bound him. It was a testament to the Vaizard’s strength, skill and timing, of which made Kaisho feel unsettled. Zaine had earlier considered this initiation a display of Lerato’s lack of confidence, and for some reason, Lerato was very quick to disprove this and ordered the immediate releasing of the Kidou binding the Ninth Squad Captain. Was this due to Kaisho’s lack of trust? Or was it an act of pride? In either case, Kaisho decided that now was his time to take action. Kaisho suddenly jolted a good distance from the group, having to turn his back to them in order to leap the distance he travelled in one movement. As his feet planted onto the rubble underfoot, Kaisho swept his left foot clockwise to face them again, pulling his Zanpakuto from the scabbard behind his back in the process.

“Bankai!! Soudai Shiro Kangetsu!!”

A booming echo from Kaisho’s voice surrounded the area for a few seconds, quickly followed by a massive spike in reiatsu and a wave of chilling frost expanding for hundreds of metres. The release for Kaisho’s Bankai still had that air of immaturity, in how wildly the frost expanded upon release, and the sheer radius it reached. Due to the temperature change of the area, there was a slight fog in the air; not enough to obscure vision completely, but enough to make it impossible to see outside of a few hundred feet. The Seventh Squad Captain brandished his ornate wakizashi, which had an extraordinarily long, pure white tassel; dwarfing the sword in length. “Tsuibi Hyouchuu, Heki!!” Kaisho uttered, bringing the butt of the Zanpakutou round and taking up a wide but firm stance. The tassel burst into life at the uttering of the command, and shot swiftly out towards Lerato and Zaine. His target looked to be the First Squad’s Lieutenant at a glance, but in fact, it was heading straight for Zaine. At the very last minute, Kaisho forced the single stream of sharply pointed ice to split and deviate from the centre, over a hundred smaller icicles racing towards Zaine. Many of them were clearly going to miss, although that was Kaisho’s intention, and partly through his own inexperience in dealing with Tsuibi Hyouchuu in its Bankai state, but he made sure that of the few heading on a course with Zaine, all of which were heading for non-vital areas of his fellow Captain’s body.

The Hell Butterfly delivered shocking news to the Shinigami, Kokurongai Jakkuras. Ever since his sojourn in the World of the Living, the 10th Squad Captain had changed multiple times, he was not familiar with the current one. However, he was being called back to Soul Society since he was apparently considered a senior in the Tenth Squad. Never mind the fact he had never interacted with anyone else from there and had spent more time in the Human World than not. Yet he was being recalled, and if the tone of the message was any indication, for good. He supposed it was inevitable, after all no Shinigami was ever going to be kept in the World of the Living for a long time, Jakku might have set the record.

He gave the town one more look-over. Soon he would be replaced by another Shinigami. Although he would not go as far as saying he would miss it, he still felt a small connection to the place he had made his home for so long. He turned away from the town and looked back at the Hell Butterfly. Grabbing his nodachi on his back, Jakku dissipated the plain black sheath into smoke and drew out his zanpakuto. With a quick motion, he drew a circle in the air, the tip of his nodachi leaking a small portion of spiritual energy to actually create it. Once he connected the admittedly imperfect circle, it rounded itself out and formed a doorway that opened up. The Hell Butterfly rested itself on Jakku’s right shoulder. With one another look backwards, he stepped through the Senkaimon and returned to Soul Society.

Immediately he was struck by the presence of multiple overwhelmingly high spiritual energies. The full spiritual pressure in the area, and the sudden transition from one of no pressure rooted him in spot, unable to move as he struggled to blast open his own spiritual pressure, which he had refrained from using in the Human World else he disrupt the town’s flow of life. As he was finally able to move his limbs a second later while his reiatsu manifested around himself, the cold wind gave him a split second warning where he tightened up and tried to dodge whatever was coming his way. Nearly a hundred shards of ice blasted into him regardless and sent his desperate dodge into an uncontrolled crash backwards. He smashed into someone of something and continued on, crashing through rotten pillars before impacting on something sufficiently hard. No need to worry though, whatever he had first crashed into softened the impact.

His eyesight was hazy and his mind only screamed one thing at him. “It’s a trap. It’s a trap. It’s a trap! It’s A Trap! IT’S A TRAP! IT’S A TRAP!!” The shards of ice that littered and pierced the front of his body were not as damaging as they first appeared, yet he felt his motor abilities rather hampered by a few well-placed icicles. He tried to get up to respond to whatever was coming and quickly crashed back down. Good thing that soft object was still there to cushion that too. A flicker of worry and frustration crossed his face. His own reiatsu, fully released now, broadcasted his panicked, yet slowly subsiding, emotions. He got up again, using his zanpakuto as a crutch and then held it out in both hands. ******** the world but he was not going to die easily! All of his frustration and rage, accumulated over many, many years, helped support him as he raised his nodachi, held firmly in both hands while his feet planted themselves firmly on the ground. With a loud battle roar that shook the decrepit building he challenged whoever was out there to come at him.

”Erupt, Kazan Totem!” Jakku declared. He stabbed the nodachi back into the ground with both hands as a totem pole formed in its place. The totem pole was three heads tall and each head was four feet high with a diameter of three feet. Each one had a handle on the back where Jakku could hold it and every head was unique and connected by a chain. He grabbed hold of the middle totem and began to build up spiritual energy in it. Each head then opened its mouth and began to form a lance-like stick of lava. Jakku exhaled, the adrenaline rushing through his entire body, and waited for the first target to appear.

(I have permission to appear and abuse Zaine. Of course, almost everyone does.)
