OFFLINE TREND: Newsprint Nails

I heard about this trend over my Facebook page. It was posted by a local radio station. I thought it was a neat idea and I gave it a try. It does work.
Here's what you need.

  • About an hour of free time (it took me an hour and a half because my polish took a while to dry)
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • White or Gray nail Polish
  • Base coat and Top coat polish (They're clear)
  • Newspaper

First step you want to do is to make sure your nails are clean.

After you clean your nails, you want to put your base coat on and let it dry. Most base nail polish takes about 30-45 seconds to dry. Tap your nails together to check. If they feel like they're sticking together then they're not dry yet.

Next, you take your white/gray polish. Depending on the thickness of the polish, you should do 2-3 coats of whatever color you want. You don't have to use white or gray, but don't pick a dark color like black or red.
You need to let each coat dry REALLY well before you put on the next coat. Tap your nails together to check.

When you get your two coats of polish on and they're dry, you want to take a little dish of rubbing alcohol and dip your finger in (do one finger at a time). Pre-cut your strips of newspaper to fit each nail.
When you dip your finger in the rubbing alcohol, take a strip of newspaper and press it onto your nail. Don't move it around or smudge it. When you put it on, hold it on. To speed it up, take a cotton ball damped with the rubbing alcohol and use that to press down on your nail. Wait about 15-25 seconds before you take off the newspaper. This works exactly like the tattoos you used to use when you were a kid.

Do this for all your nails. If you mess one up, immediately rub it off. If you let your white coat dry before doing this step, rubbing (with water) shouldn't affect the polish. Just take the ink off.
Also, make sure you READ what you're going to be putting on your nail.. You don't (or maybe you do) want to put any vulgarities on your nails.. You can have fun and target words. I know I put the word "Voices" on one of my fingers.

You also want to make sure you check how you're putting the paper on your nails. You might end up (like I did) with everything being backwards.. ninja

When you're happy with the results, finish off by putting your top coat of clear polish on to protect your nails.
