Adjuchas- are the second classification of Menos. They are smaller than Gillians and far fewer in number. However, they're much smarter and stronger than Gillians. They're often the ones who lead Gillians into battle. Adjuchas are commonly solitary creatures rarely joining into groups. They are powerful enough to challenge a captain of the Gotei 13. Adjuchas can vary radically in appearance; anywhere from bulky humanoids to the jaguar-like form of pre-Arrancar.
Simplify- Adjuchas are the second strongest of the Menos-class. They are smarter and stronger than Gillians as well as they usually lead the Gillians. Adjuchas often don't team up, the form they look like is of a bulky humanoid or animal-like form.
Arrancar- is a Hollow that has removed its mask and has gained Shinigami-like powers.
Bakudō- Its Defensive, Communication, Binding, Tracking and Sealing Kidō.
Bankai- is the second and final upgraded form of a Zanpakutō. To achieve Bankai, one must be able to materialize and subjugate their Zanpakutō spirit. Materialization means the opposite of getting dragged into the Zanpakutō's inner world. Instead the wielder needs to summon the Zanpakutō's spirit into the physical world. It usually takes 10 years or more to achieve, plus the experience needed to master it.
Simplify- Bankai is the final stage that a shinigami can achieve.
Bankai Form- After a Shinigami is able to materialize and subjugate their Zanpakutō's spirit, the Zanpakutō can assume its final and most powerful form. Unlike the Shikai, there is no command phrase to activate Bankai, though the user will usually say "Bankai" beforehand. A Zanpakutō's Bankai is often a manifestation of the spirit itself, usually creating a massive creature or a very powerful effect to aid the user in battle. The Bankai itself will receive a different name in addition to the ordinary Zanpakutō. Certain Shinigami also change with their Zanpakutō, gaining clothing similar to what their Zanpakutō's spirit form looks like. Most Zanpakutō will also gain additional special abilities, or a more enhanced version of the usual one. Like with the Shikai, most of these abilities have an associated name. Maintaining the Bankai is taxing for the wielder, and it is difficult to maintain it for long periods of time for most Shinigami.
Simplify- Basically, when in Bankai it gets a different name, meaning that another name is added on to your old name (for example Ichigo's Zangetsu becomes Tensa Zangetsu, Byakuya's Senbonzakura becomes Senbonzakura Kageyoshi). Some when they enter bankai, their outfit changes with the zanpakuto as well. Most don't have a command phrase.
Central 46- is an organization that serves as the judiciary authority of the Soul Society. Operating under a mandate from the Spirit King, the influence Central 46 goes well beyond the boundaries of a judiciary authority and into those of legislative and operative authorities.
Simplify- Central 46 work for the Spirit King to keep order. Being the rulers of Soul Society, they hold authority over the Shinigami forces in the Gotei 13.
Cero (Hollow Flash)- is a form of attack used by Menos, Arrancar and Visored. As a standard energy blast, it consists of firing a powerful blast of concentrated spiritual energy at the target.
Simplify- It is just a beam of concentrated energy that consider dangerous just being fired at anything.
Chain of Fate- is a chain that binds souls to their living bodies.
Chiyudo- Its Healing Kidō.
Commander General (Captain-Commander)- is the supreme leader of the Gotei 13. The position requires the Captain-Commander to oversee the overall operations of the Gotei 13, Onmitsukidō and Kidō Corps when the well being of Seireitei and Soul Society is at stake. The only power the Captain-Commander is answerable to is the Central 46 Chambers.
Simplify- Basically the Commander is the overseer of all the operations that would benefit the Seireitei better. The only people that the Commander answers to is Central 46.
Daireishokairo- is a repository of all the knowledge and history of the Soul Society.
Dangai- also known as the Precipice World, is the dimension between Soul Society and the Human World, separated from space and time.
Simplify- It is a place that has its own time and space, it is an area that is in between the Soul Society and the Human World once gone through the Senkaimon.
Demi-Hollow- is a Jibakurei, an earthbound spirit who is evolving into a Hollow. It usually takes a while for the earthbound spirit to fully transform into a Hollow, but this process can be sped up by forcing the hole in their chest to open. The Demi-Hollows are held down by chains, usually to somewhere they consider to be their territory. They are usually only seen when a Human steps on their territory and cannot be easily sensed by Shinigami.
Simplify- during the process of Encroachment, earthbound souls become Demi-Hollows
Eishōhaki- Mostly if not all kidō has an incantation that must be resided. Some Shinigami are able to use kidō even without saying its incantation because of the "Incantation Bypass", without the incantation a person can use that kidō faster but correlates to the Kidō's ensuing reduced effectiveness.
Encroachment- is the process of a Plus gradually losing its Chain of Fate. The process physically begins the moment the body dies and the Chain of Fate is broken. The Encroachment usually lasts months or even years, although a special gas exists that can speed up the process to a mere 72 hours. With every cycle of the Encroachment the furthest link in the chain begins to gnash and chew into itself and the links attached to it. The process cannot be halted by any known means - any attempt to do so would end in a nasty bite.
Simplify- It is a process also known as "corrosion" that happens right when a person dies. Basically what happens is the longer that a soul stays earthbound the more that soul slowly becomes an hollow.
Espada- are the top-ranked Arrancar in Sōsuke Aizen's army of Hollow-Shinigami hybrids, are the most powerful Hollows under Aizen's command, and are the main rivals of the Gotei 13.
Simplify- Also known as the "Ten Blades", they are the strongest Arrancars that is why they were given the name Espada.
Fukutaichou- The Japanese term for Vice-Captain, meaning the Lieutenant of a Squad.
Garganta- is a gate used by Menos and Arrancar class Hollows to travel between the Human World, the Soul Society and Hueco Mundo.
Gigai- is an artificial body that allows Shinigami to remain in the Human World and interact with Humans.
Simplify- It is a man-made body so that shinigamis can be seen by humans and roam the Human World like any other human does.
Gikon- are souls designed by Shinigami scientists to separate a Shinigami's spirit from a Gigai, should they be inhabiting one, or to evict stubborn spirits from their corpses if necessary.
Simplify- Basically when a shinigami live there gigai, to make sure nothing gets in it they use the Gikon to put a soul in the gigai to take there place for them.
Gikongan (Soul Candy)- because the Shinigami Women's Association complained that its name wasn't cute and had it changed. To fit with the more informal name, Soul Candy is contained in toy dispensers that have the heads of cartoon characters on them. These dispensers come in many varieties, with some being more popular than others. Artificial souls tend to have personalities that reflect traits of their corresponding dispenser's character.
Simplify- Basically simple-minded females didn't like the more appropriate name for "Gikon", so they made a more ridiculous name and look for it.
Gillian- are the first and weakest of all Menos. In human terms they would be considered foot soldiers. There are many of them and they all look alike. In Soul Society, they are the "Menos" that are generally referred to in textbooks. Gillians are huge, but they are slow and have beast-like intellect.
Gillians are huge monster Hollows towering at least 2-6 stories tall, easily dwarfing even the largest standard Hollow. They all have a white mask with an elongated nose. Their bodies are covered from theirs head to their feet with a black covering reminiscent of a cloak. Around their neck is a row of thin white spikes. They have large, pointed feet wrapped in white bandages. They have large white hands with long, sharp, white nails, but they are commonly hidden within their cloak, rarely revealed even in combat. They also have long tongues capable of breaking a fellow Hollow's mask.
Simplify- Basically these primal-minded creatures are the weakest of the Menos-class but there are many of them around. They are 2-6 stories giants that there entire from head to feet is covered in a black cloak, they all have white mask.
Gotei 13 (The 13 Court Guardians)- is the primary military branch of Soul Society. It is also the main military organization that most Shinigami join after the academy.
Simplify- Once after the academy, the graduates join the Gotei 13 that have many different branches that serve for different purposes that defend lives of all living and souls.
Hadō- Its Offensive Kidō.
Hakuda- a close-combat style of fighting in which one is unarmed and uses only ones body. High-speed Taijutsu attacks are used to overwhelm the opponent. Physical strength and skill is determined by this class. It also seems to be a combination of several martial arts.
Hanki- Anti-Kidō offset. A fighting technique that combats an opponents Kidō by hitting it with a Kidō of the same quality and quantity spinning in the opposite direction.
Hirenkyaku- is a method which Quincy use to travel quickly over short distances. Essentially, it is the Quincy equivalent to the Shinigami's Shunpo, or the Arrancar's Sonído.
Hohō- is the name given to one of the four combat skills of the Shinigami and relates to footwork.
Hollow- are a race of creatures which are born from Human souls who, for various reasons, do not cross over to Soul Society after their death and stay in the Human World for too long. They are corrupt spirits with supernatural powers that devour the souls of both living and deceased Humans. Hollows settle in Hueco Mundo, but can cross over to the Human World and Soul Society.
Simplify- after the process of Encroachment, the soul bound becomes a hollow.
Hollowfication- These terms are used to describe the process in which Shinigami gain Hollow powers.
Hōgyoku- is a small, bluish-purple orb composed of a unique substance thought to be capable of dissolving the boundaries between Shinigami and Hollows, allowing one race to attain the powers of the other. However, its true power lies in its ability to sense the hearts of those around it, and to materialize their deepest desire.
Simplify- Basically it is an orb that have the power to grant the holder desire wish in there heart.
Hueco Mundo- is the dimension where Hollows and Arrancar usually reside.
Inner World- A world that is created of introspection where it reflects the person them-self. This is where the Zanpakuto Spirit resides at.
Jigokuchō- are completely black butterflies, except for a small outline of maroon on their lower wings, that serve various purposes.
Simplify- Basically the butterflies is used to guide Shinigamis through the Dangai as well as send messages to others.
Jokou- Its Supporting Kidō.
Kaizō Konpaku- more commonly referred to as Modsouls, are artificial souls designed to enhance regular human physiology, making them capable of battling Hollows equally.
Kenseikan (Star Pulling Silence)- A head ornament that only nobles are allowed to wear. Consists of a series of clamps that are directly attached to one's hair.
Kidō- A group of techniques that Shinigami use to focus their Spiritual Energy into magic spells which serve a wide variety of uses such as healing, defense, or combat.
Kidō Corps- is a separate branch of Soul Society's military that excels in the art of Kidō.
Kiokuchikan- A device that Shinigami use to alter the memories of spiritually sensitive humans that may have witnessed a battle with a Hollow or any other major spiritual action.
Konpaku- A regular human soul.
Konsō- the process by which a Shinigami sends wandering Pluses (souls) in the living world and send them to their respective place. Either Soul Society if they are good in life, or to Hell if their life was full of evil acts (such as murders, theft, etc). Konsō is performed by using the hilt of the Shinigami's Zanpakutō, tapping the soul on the head and transporting them to the afterlife.
Simplify- Sending an earthbound soul pass on to the afterlife where they belong.
Negación- is the term used for the fields used by Hollows to rescue fellow Hollows. Only the Gillian-class Menos have shown the ability to use Negación.
Onmitsukidō- also called the Secret Mobile Unit/Corps, Special Forces or Covert Ops, is the second largest organization that Shinigami join, and one of the three main branches of military in Soul Society.
Quincy- are a line of spiritually aware Human warriors. They use their ability to absorb and manipulate Reiryoku to create bows and arrows from spiritual energy. These arrows and their related techniques are dangerous to spiritual beings. The majority of them were killed more than 200 years ago.
Simplify- Basically humans that has the power to adsorb and manipulate spiritual energy to form bows and arrows.
Reiatsu- Reiatsu is the physical force/pressure that a person’s Reiryoku creates when released.
Reiraku- Reiraku are the visualization of Reiryoku into threads which a spiritually aware person can follow.
Reiryoku- Reiryoku is a power aligned with the spiritual sensitivity and willpower of the user.
Reishi- sometimes called Spiritrons, are the fundamental particles which make up all spiritual things. This includes the spiritual bodies of Hollows and Shinigami, and the two planes of existence, Hueco Mundo and the Soul Society in their entirety. Reishi is invisible to mortals (such as Humans with the exception of spiritually aware ones such as the Quincy); they can, however, still interact with normal matter and produce physical effects. It is noted, however, that reishi and atoms do not mix well.
Resurrección- returns the essence of an Arrancar's offensive Hollow abilities to their humanoid bodies. Arrancar seal the nuclei of their abilities within the form of a sword, entirely different from what the Shinigami use. When they release their weapons' seals, they unleash their true power and their true form. The only time they can return to human form is when they reseal their powers in sword form. Changing their form without resealing their powers in a sword is the same as burning off an arm, and if they were to discard part of their released form, while in it, they can never return to normal again.
Simplify- The first release of an Arrancar after there command phrase. The zankaputo merges with the Arrancar usually causing a physical change to appear, nit just clothing but also body.
Rukongai- is the largest portion of Soul Society and the most populated.
Ryoka- a person who enters soul society without prior permission.
Sekki-Seki- Lethal presence rock. A rare mineral in Soul Society that blocks all spiritual energy. It also emits waves that breaks down spiritual energy.
Senkaimon- are gates used to travel between the human world and the Soul Society.
Shikai- is the second form (or first "upgraded" form) available to a Zanpakutō. To activate it, the Shinigami needs to learn the name of their Zanpakutō. This is not as easy as simply picking a name, as the living spirit of the Zanpakutō already has its own name. Therefore, the Shinigami must be able to communicate and harmonize with their Zanpakutō effectively, which requires being able to speak to the spirit within its world.
Simplify- Shikai is the first stage that Shinigami achieve.
Shikai Forms- Once the Shikai is activated, the Zanpakutō will change form to access whatever special abilities it is capable of. They almost always take on the form of a weapon of some kind, though the type of weapon can vary greatly among different Zanpakutō. One exception is Retsu Unohana's Shikai, which seems to take on the characteristics of an animal, rather than a weapon.
Simplify- Once the command phrase is said, usually the zanpakuto would change but there is some cases that the wielder clothing would change as well.
Shinigami (Death God)- are a race of spiritual beings that act as enforcers and psychopomps who all share similar supernatural powers. Shinigami use their Zanpakutō to perform soul burials on Pluses. Shinigami also use their Zanpakutō and Kidō to fight Hollows.
Simplify- Warriors who uses blades and spells to fight off evil for the greater good.
Shinō Academy- sometimes called the Shinigami Academy, is an institute founded by Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto. Located in Seireitei, the academy trains future Shinigami for each of the three military arms of Soul Society.
Simplify- Basically a school for people to train them into becoming Shinigami.
Shunkō- Hybrid Techniques correspond to techniques that are a combination of different skills that are naturally separate. They are placed together in various ways in which to achieve new advantageous techniques.
Simplify- Basically just found a way how to mix Hakuda and Kidō together to create a new way of fighting and reaching new heights.
Shunshin- The title given to the fastest person in all of Soul Society.
Shunpo (Flash Step)- a movement technique that allows the user to move faster than the eye can follow. The focal point that determines the basis of this technique is speed. As speed is the main point of the technique the method is best characterized by how fast one can get from point A to point B in the least amount of steps.
Simplify- A skill that high ranking Shinigami uses to get to a destination in a shorter time period.
Sōkyoku- is a large halberd, which the Gotei 13 uses at Sōkyoku Hill to execute Shinigami that have severely broken the law.
Sonído- is a technique mainly used by Arrancar which allows them to move at extreme speeds, making it equivalent to the Hohō that Shinigami use and the Hirenkyaku that Quincy use.
Soul Society- is the afterlife (also called the spirit world). It is meant to correspond to Heaven or Nirvana in Human belief systems. It is the place where most departed souls and the Shinigami dwell.
Spearhead- A Soul Society project to inject fighting spirits into dead animals, and to use the reanimated corpses as advance guards against Hollows.
Taichou- The Japanese term for Captain.
Tenshintai- Artifact belonging to the Onmitsukidō, but invented and tested by Urahara. The item is a vaguely human-shaped, man-sized doll used to forcibly materialize the spirit of a Zanpakutō into the real world when stabbed by the Zanpakutō. In doing so, the user can subjugate the spirit and attain the Bankai of their Zanpakutō. The materialization lasts for about three days, after which the spirit reverts back into the doll that spawned it. Without this invention, achieving the Bankai takes at least ten years, not to mention the many years of combat experience needed. This method, however, is very dangerous due to the fact that it forcibly materializes the Zanpakutō's spirit. If used more than three times consecutively, it is possibly fatal to the user.
Simplify- Basically this little device hopefully helps a Shinigami achieve Bankai within three days instead of ten years.
Urahara Shoten (Urahara Shop)- A small store specializing in trafficked merchandise from Soul Society. It is also the base of operations for Urahara Kisuke's various efforts in the living world and houses an enormous training area below ground.
Vizard- is a group of Shinigami that have acquired Hollow powers.
Vasto Lorde- are the third classification of Menos and the highest level of evolution. They are extremely small Hollows, roughly the same size as humans and are extremely rare in number. It is said that you could count their entire number within Hueco Mundo with only the fingers of your hand. The Vasto Lordes' combat capabilities are above that of the captains of the Gotei 13.
Simplify- Despite their small size, they are the strongest and smartest of the whole Menos-class. There form is to a human and there are very little of them around.
Zanjutsu- is the fighting style for the Zanpakutō, (i.e. sword fighting). It is shameful for a Shinigami not to master at least this technique.
Zanpaku (Soul Cutter)- A shortened, more commonly used wording for Zanpakutou.
Zanpaku spirit- A fully sentient being that can be housed inside of a Zanpaku. Originating from the soul of a Shinigami, they are a separate embodiment of their owner's powers, but are simultaneously part of the same individual. Depending on the relationship a Shinigami has with its Zanpaku spirit, varying levels and qualities of Shikai and Bankai can be expressed in battle.
Zanpakutou (Soul Cutting Sword)- is the main weapon of the Shinigami, the Arrancar and the Vizard. The art of wielding a Zanpakutō is called Zanjutsu.
