Humus Urbs

If one walks long enough in the eastern desert, one may find a stone structure standing alone in the stretch of endless sand. At first glance, such a structure may only be seen as an old collection of bricks erected in the deser for no good reason, but such a building does serve a great purpose. It is the entrance to a great city, Humus Urbs.

Once a small burrow for those hiding from the burning sun, this small hideout has flourished into a thriving city beneath the swirling sands of the east. The people have adapted to the dark, and don't need the sun to survive. They can see by the light of only small torches, and they live off food that grows without sunlight and water found deep in underground tunnels. It's a haven for those who want to escape the heat, and a sight for travellers who don't expect to see such wonders. The city could be seen as perfect, were it not for one small flaw.

The governing council of 12 and it's Supreme Council Executive has halted all movement out of the city, and no one knows the reason. All that is known now is that once you are in the city, there is no getting out, and incoming travellers have no way of discovering before it's too late. The citizens are getting restless, and the government is becoming more iron fisted with each passing day. Rumours are beggining to spread that The Supreme Council Executive wishes to wage a war on Aden, and drive the perfect city of the phoenix underground, but no one can know for sure what's going on. All that can be said now is that Humus Urbs is experiencing trouble, not only with it's relations with other kingdoms, but with itself, and it's internal workings. The underground city won't be able to survive if it goes to war with another city, because it's risking war with it's own people.

The Setting
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

User Image

Inside the initial stone structure on the surface, there waits a stone staircase spiraling deep under the ground. At the bottom, many miles downward, one continues down a tunnel which leads into a great pocket beneath the earth's surface. Then it's only a stone brigdge left to cross before one passes the wall guarded by soldiers, and enters the grand city through it's eastern gate. The city's structures are all carved from stone, and the rocky streets are lit by small torches built from flammable subterrainian rocks. The outer most regions of the city are inhabbited by the lower classes, while the more powerful live in the central circle. In the mid regions, buildings are made into shops an other places of commerce, where both classes can reach their basic need with eaqual difficulty, though the store's location is based on it's quality and which class would be better suited to shop there. In the very center of the city, and stone pillar connects the ground with the ceiling. The pillar is converted into the grean council chambers. The many actions of the governing bodies and their commitees meet here, and all decisions regarding the city are made here. At the top of the pillar, the Governing Council's chamber resides, it's thirteen seats (one for each member, and one for the Supreme council executive) sit together, waiting for all final decisions to be made in their presence. The southern gate leads to the underground water resevoir, where a large lake resides with beautifully filtered water. The northern gate leads to the subterrainian garden, where rare sunless plants grow without troubles. The western gate eads to nothing but empty darkness, where it's said that criminals are exiled to never be seen again.

The underground city was one of little light, little vantage points to be seen from, and plenty of dead ended alley paths: the perfect place for a good ol' robbery or two! It was like the sweet offering of nectar to a hummingbird; a pristine hunting field in which to seize her prey inside. And the tigress had entered the scene indeed: but what she was about to find out, was that she wasn't about to exit it, anytime soon.

Her boots scuffled against sand and stone softly. Her green, vibrant eyes followed the endless dark path, illuminated only by a path of flickering flame on either wall. The orange-red flames danced across her pale skin, casting her in a constant shifting glow. Across her face, her lips curled into a slight smile. A pack upon her waist, tightly strapped to her, never daring to get out of direct reach of her gloved hand, seemed.. heavier than usual. It jingled lightly occasionally. Her violet hair swished behind her, tied in a high ponytail behind her. She was a 'working woman', and couldn't have it getting in the way of her delicate arts, now could she?

She had intended to get out of the city before dark fell across the sands outside of Aden. She was to get home, after all- with her fellow bandits and theives, crooks and lairs. But she seemed to have not only lost her way, but also her track of time outside. Her eyes constantly flickered to the intersecting pathways. It wasn't soon that she had found what seemed to be a main exit!

The purple-haired bandit made haste towards the destination. Across her belt lay her swords, crafted of non-enchanted Enfarantite, a metal found within the southern wastelands. The black blades boasted vibrantly painted Sakura flowers and petals stretching across the flats of the blades. She had a blow gun tucked somewhere in her tight fitting outfit, and the darts hid elsewhere, rolling in various neurotoxins. No one would expect her to have room for such things in this get-up, another deception she deployed.

She'd reached the guards.. Whom immediatly crossed their large weapons across the vacant gateway. Outside, the golden sands toiled in the winds aimlessly, enticing the woman to get to it. Yet.. It was blocked, by a pair of rather large weapons that boasted keen edges, held in the arms of even larger weapon masters. Perhaps.. She'd been found out?

She smiled then, her lips curving with an innocent purity. her eyes filtered her coy thoughts, into nothing but doe-like curiosity, fear even. "Is there something wrong? I just wish to get out. I was visting a fr--" Her words were cut off by a gruff masculine voice. "Exit is cleared for now. Go back to the square." She let her lower lip quiver lightly, a leaf in the winds of feigned misery. " But I need to go home to my family--" She was, again, cut off. "No. Leave now, before security makes you."

She frowned further, her eyes hiding the snake-like intellect that coiled within her mind. What was she to do now? She looked about, turning to head back.. Surely she'd find a way. If it came to a shove, she'd have to alter their moods into.. a more gentle, sympathetic light to exit, then erase their meories of her entirely. But she couldn't always rely on those abilities she had.. That was like a constant crutch!

Entering through the southern gate of Humus Urbs, a man clad in a brown jacket, shirt with high colar, black trousers and nice dark brown boots looked around at the wonderful city. His long coat billowed behind him as the light from the dim torches danced across his pale face. The beauty of the underground city was unique, and intriguing, and though he had lived there for quiet a while, it still astounded him how wonderful a place built without light could prosper. His boots thumped lightly on the stone roads, and townspeople were running from building to building, doing what they had to do for the day.

The man walking from the southern gate was none other than Bhudev Adair, the fifth councilman of the Humus Urbs Governing Council. Bhudev was quite happy that he did not have to attend any meetings that day. The commitee's under his jurisdiction didn't want anything, the council didn't want anything, and even Bhudev's other profession seemed to be resting today. The pale councilman was more than thrilled to have the time to just walk around, and enjoy the sights. He admired the stone structures. The towers, huts, domes, overhangs and gates were all so wholesome and different from everywhere else. The architectural design was utter genius. Who wouldn't fall in love with such a city?

Eventually, Bhudev's walk brought him near the eastern gate. This gate was heavily guarded, since it was the only real entrance and exit to Humus Urbs. The other gates just lead to lakes, gardens, or darkness. As Bhudev went on his way, he saw something that caught his eye. It was a woman. Something was off about her. Bhudev quickly deduced that this woman was not from the underground city. It was not her palor that gave it away. In fact, a complexion like that would make it quite easy to pass for a local. No, there was something else. He wasn't sure what it was, but he could just tell. He walked in the direction, and just before he passed her, he stopped. "Excuse me, miss, but you aren't from here, are you?" He smiled as he said this. He didn't want to come off as threatening.

Shokyo wasn't a happy camper! The thief hard a rather large sum of pick-pocketed gold in her parcel.. In fact, under and regular circumstance, she wouldn't have taken so much, from so many. Yet this was a city she had intended to utilize as a hit-and-run situation.. she wasn't coming back any time soon.. Even if it was interesting. She'd always had wanted to visit as a young child.. Ironic that now she had visited, she wanted to leave so quickly. Greater irony, and perhaps the poison in her wine? she wasn't able to leave so quick.. She could only hope she had no witnesses.

Yet, her thoughts were interrupted. She was shambling off, dragging her boots in half-feigned misery. It was to put on the act that she had, indeed, needed to leave for family-- you know, poor little ones without their mother.. Something to pull the heart strings, maybe get their sympathy. Her eyes were clouded with falsified agony and sadness.. Only, to see and hear a figure walking. And with his arrival, something.. strange, happened. It, for her,w as as easily detected as the shift in the winds; a sudden change in color..

The general emotions of the two guards behind her changed. she could feel it, as much as she could see it. Their stance strengthened, trying to give off the most professional look that they could. Their eyes were fixated on something, the object creating the sounds, like deer on the wolf. Her head swiveled in curiosity, her doe-like eyes blinking behind a layer of black, long lashes.

A man. A simple man-- and by his attire, and by their attitudes.. He wasn't exactly 'simple'[/ii] to her any more. A noble of sorts, if this city even had those. He was walking.. directly toward her, almost, geared to walk past perhaps. His eyes, a hazel.. They were sharp with keen observation. She could feel his intellect scouring over her like a gentle breathe-- discreet, non-hostile.. but very direct.

He stopped, smiling.. He was observant, indeed, to know that. She looked up at him, her eyes still filled with such an emotion.. "Sir.. No, I am not. I'm from a small village outside of Aden," she began. Now, that was true-- she didn't directly live in Aden.. "I'm trying to get home, to my family. I can to visit a long-lost friend.. Now they're saying, I cannot go home." He obviously had position. He obviously had control over the brutes at the door. Maybe he would be her nudge to the outside world.. The pretty liar frowned weakly, her purple hair gleaming weakly in the light as she shook her head with an upset motion. I can't stay."

Bhudev's smile slowly faded as he listened to the woman's tragic tale. Of course, it was another poor soul complaining about the blockade preventing all outward traffic. It was even more unfortunate that the woman was from Aden, or atleast near Aden. Humus Urbs didn't seem to having very good relations with the famed city of the phoenix lately, and so it would make sense that the Adenese would remain above the ground for their own safety. And yet this particular woman came to the underground city anyways. The councilman sighed. He looked at the guards. They looked so tense, and quite uncomfortable. "Looking like a statue won't impress me, you two. Statues can't guard gates. Relax a little, or you'll end up fainting." The guards relaxed their stance ever so slightly. "Sorry, Mr. Adair." They apologized in sync. Bhudev smiled, and returned his focus to the woman.

Once again, the smile faded, and Bhudev remembered that he was speaking with the woman who seemed to have a bit of an issue. "I'm sorry that you want to leave, but unfortunately I can't help you with that. You'll just have to stay until the council decided to lift the blockade. For the time being, the only people that can leave the city are councilman and their company for official affairs with other cities or kingdoms." Then something dawned on him. If the woman was trapped in the city, she would need someplace to stay until the blockade was lifted. "Do you have a place to stay while you're here? I know that inns can get expensive, so is it possible that you can stay with your friend while you're waiting?" Bhudev didn't want to have a woman trapped in a new place without any shelter or protection from the outside. He knew that it could get quite cold once night really set in.

Shokyo would observe him from green eyes for the next few moments. She could feel his emotions in the air slightly, though it seemed to her that he was in a relatively calm state. She could tell he held some power here, but she was not sure exactly how, and much much of it. But it was promising that the guards that pinned her here showed him such regard. With hope, if she played the pity card to this guy, she could get out of here!

His smile faded slowly when he listened. Her coy eyes hid her amusement and hope.. He was unhappy to hear it, and she could feel a slight sympathetic wind from him. He sighed, and peered at the guards, and her lips almost curled into a wily smile. 'No no, you're supposed to be MISERABLE.'Yet she'd hold back, and any urge would dissipate when he spoke to them. It wasn't something along the lines of 'let her go'.. No, just about their stature being unimpressive. She held back a sigh of her own, but she still felt hope. Maybe he'd still let her go after this. They apologized, and she caught it. His name was Mr. Adair.. she'd rummage through her mind to figure the name's meaning out.. Who was he? She was unfamiliar here, and she came up with a blank.

He looked back, his smile gone.. With an apology, he told her what she'd feared hearing from him. He couldn't help, despite his power over the guards. She frowned, letting her lips finally express her thoughts. Her eyes drowned in their misery, which was mostly dramatized. He'd also lend some insight on the situation. It wasn't just her, it was the entire civilian populace here. At least she knew it wasn't just her.. She hadn't been caught yet.

So the purple haired thief looked down to the ground for a moment, at her booted feet, before back at him. He spoke again, before she could play he trump card hiding in her 'pockets'. She blinked.. Damn it. She was paying for one of her lies here: she had no friends in this city. She'd need to cover that up, quickly. The pretty little liar frowned further, it would look like her heart-shaped face would shatter if she seemed any more unhappy. " Um.. I can't.. They.. Have no room for me, and.. I left because they'd business to attend to." She looked away, blinking as if she was.. about to cry.

Crocodile tears, the ultimate pity-raiser. Especially for a woman to utilize.. Second only to little kids, and she'd used that card to her advantage heavily during her time, too. " I-- I guess.. I could f-find an inn. I might have e--enough." Her voice furthered that she was crying. She still tried to avoid his gaze, hiding the tears. She'd bring a gloved hand up to her face and wipe an eye. "I-- I.. Just show me where the are," she ended on a sighed word.

The councilman was unable to listen to such a gloomy tale without feeling sympathy. Bhudev's frown grew a bit more prominent. If this woman's friends were unable to hold her, she would have to stay at an inn. It would likely be a while before the blockade was lifted, so logically thinking, the cost of staying in Humus Urbs that long would be insane. There was clearly going to be an issue arising from this. To make matters that much worse, it sounded as though this woman was not financially stable at that moment. She MIGHT have enough? That simply wouldn't do. Even on the outer ring of the commercial section of the city, inn rates were through the roof. This woman would wuickly find herself living off the streets of a foreign city. That just wasn't right. Bhudev felt something inside him. It was the need to fix the situation caused.

Looking at the woman, Bhudev quickly came to a solution. "From the way you sound, I doubt you'll have enough to keep you sheltered for more than a couple days. The blockade could last weeks, months, or even years." He glanced at the city, and all it's splendor. For just a moment, he saw a dark quality to it he had never noticed before. It was only there for a quick flash before it faded. Bhudev shook his head, and returned his gaze to the woman. "It's clear that you have three options. The first option, which I don't reccomend, is you stay at a cheap inn. However, soon enough, your funds will run out, and you'll probably land on the streets, living as some low scrounging theif. The second option is similar to the first, except you skip the part where you stay at an inn." His eyes brightened before he began to last part of his statement. "The third option is that you find someone who will take you as their guest until you can leave. Now, since you're friends can't do that for you, you really have no one that can do that for you... Except maybe..." He put on a smile, leaving her to infer what he meant to put in that blank empty space left at the end of his sentance.
