Okay so since my family has moved up and down the states I been to a ton of schools. Since Pokemon I think nearly every school I been in since 7th or 8th grade had some sort of anime/comic after school club or something. Anyway I see this trend and its been bugging me.
Most anime clubs claim to teach about Asian (usually Japanese culture) and respect. However, more and more due to technology they basically use club money provided by the school and fundraisers to just watch illegal anime shows and manga scans. Before these sites were easily accessible 1 person would go out and buy a box-set or series and they would copy them for others. This was even more acceptable at my first college and they had a big budget and we were allowed to go to Comic Con in San Diego but mostly to just sell fan art and run around like crazy.
The issue I have is: It seems disrespectful to the culture you claim to be promoting and preaching respect about. I mean it's a lot of work that goes into making anime series so it just seems wrong to just illegal download a bunch of series and NEVER paid for them at all. In addition to just hording club money to just go on trips with just a few members of the club, only to then use said club money on petty things like the "captains" cosplay outfits.
I mean most of the ones I was involved in don't teach you about Japanese culture or anything. Mostly they just watch illegal subs of pre-selected anime, eat pizza, and gossip about random stuff. Shouldn't they at least buy the American license series and watch it subtitled. I mean I understand that for some anime series are better in their native language and there's a lot of anime series that aren't aired but are available to purchase legally. I mean do we have a channel showing the new Hellsing? So I wonder if this is just how it is everywhere and everyone is just okay with it? Is it you know right for students to just take money and spend it so unwisely. As they aren't really using it for the purpose since they aren't actually buying any materials. So there's that element plus the whole just stealing from a culture that you claim to respect.
Thoughts please.
P.S. no I am not involved in any anime clubs atm as there's always too much in-house fighting between the captains as they are usually run by roommates or friends. Plus they are almost always against dub series or anything that is license.
