I am a Member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. We are commonly known as Mormons. Recently in the news I hear that Mormonism is not Christianity, and I would like to know why we are not considered Christian.

I beleive in Christ. He is the Literal Son of God. He is the Savior and my Redeemer and he is my Brother because while I am not a literal Daughter of God, God is the Father of my Soul. I believe in Repentance, Forgiveness, Love, Charity and Kindness. In not judging others, in allowing others to have their own views and loving them even when they hate me. I follow Christ, I seek after him. I take his name upon me every week in renewal of my baptismal covenant when I partake of the Sacrament at church. Why am I not a Christian? is it merely because I believe that Faith with out works is dead, that you cannot just profess of Christ and turn around and do exactly opposite of what he teaches, but that you actually have to DO what Christ says in order to follow him? It hurts my heart that people say I am not a Christian. I Love Jesus. Jesus loves us. I AM A CHRISTIAN. I really want to know why so many people deny the truth of what it means to be LDS. I am striving to be like Jesus.

Can anyone tell me what definition of Christian keeps me out?

People like to complicate things...

"Christian" means "Follower of Christ" in one sense or another. I might be slightly off, it could be "Believer in Christ" or something like that, but it's the same meaning in the end.

From what I understand Mormons aren't considered Christians because certain beliefs are different. For example, I'm not sure if it's true or not, but I've been told by many people including Mormons that Mormons believe when we die males become gods and females become angels to serve the men they loved. One Mormon took this belief so far as to pray for others under his own name instead of the Lord's, attempting to place himself in God's seat.

That's just one of many things from what I understand, but honestly I don't put myself under any subtitle of Christianity. I am a Christian, end of story. I don't need to be a Baptist Christian, an LDS Christian, an Angelican Christan, or any other type of Christian. Christianity is Christianity, that's all that matters to me.

Simple answer: Sectarian differences

Long answers: We are conditioned to see catholic Christianity as being the only form of Christianity. Anything that deviates from that catholic construct, we are conditioned to regard as non-Christian. As in catholic, I don't mean Catholics, I mean basically the movement that became Catholic, Orthodox, and by extension Protestants. Because Mormons don't fit into this mold, they are regarded as non-Christian. The common definition of the "mold" given is the Apostles Creed and/or the Nicene Creed. They have different cosmology and different beliefs regarding the Godhead, in particular God the Father. Gnostics get this flack too since they believed in an emantion cosmology, matter-spirit dualists, and have different Christological stances. I get where you are coming from on this.

People don't like to consider Mormons Christians for the same reason that the governor of Israel, Pontius Pilot, arrested and crucified Yoshua ben Yosef: it (or he) was a threat to the beliefs of other protestants (or nation and its set religious mandates).

It means follower of or anointed one.

Quote:
The Greek word Χριστιανός (christianos)—meaning "follower of Christ"—comes from Χριστός (christos)—meaning "anointed one"—with an adjectival ending borrowed from Latin to denote adhering to, or even belonging to, as in slave ownership. In the Greek Septuagint, christos was used to translate the Hebrew מָשִׁיחַ (Mašíaḥ, messiah), meaning "[one who is] anointed." In other European languages, equivalent words to 'Christian' are likewise derived from the Greek, such as 'Chrétien' in French and 'Cristiano' in Spanish.

But I do not think the name of the religion has anything to do with it... The Book of Mormon is ADDING to the Bible, which is against the word of God, and therefore using the Book of Mormon is a sin, it seems.

Quote:
Revelation 22:18-19
New International Version (NIV)

18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. 19 And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll.

I could give you a definition from my perspective, or more likely direct you to a better one written by someone else, but really nobody should be going around telling other people who is and is not a Christian anyway. It's one thing to accept or reject doctrines, but we as humans are not in a position to accept or reject people. If someone tells me they are a Christian, I take them at their word. It's a faith, not a club.
