Adatlisai Asekwui

Adatlisai Asekwui is a migratory herd of horses, fiercely proud of their courage and strength.

Although the herd is large and migrates in the same direction at the same time, they are usually fairly spread-out. They travel through poor terrain, and move in small bands to avoid overgrazing any one area. Each band is headed by a stallion, and is made up of the stallion's mares and his children.

The horses of Adatlisai Asekwui are independent creatures and have a fiery temperament. They are justly proud of their skill in battle, beating back carnivores of all types. They tend to think they are the best of the herbivores and certainly the best of the horses. Much better than the stodgy Firekeepers, sitting and huddling around their fire like a bunch of wormy humans. They don't believe that horses need fire or tools.

How the herd works

All the horses of the Adatlisai Asekwui live in bands, ruled by one stallion and made up of the stallion's mares and foals. To outsiders, it might seem that the stallions dominate the mares, but the horses would disagree.

The mares of the Adatlisai Asekwui join bands of their free will, after watching a display of courage and skill by a stallion. Usually, stallions challenge one another to try and win mares. Unless they are the head mare of their harem, mares usually change stallions several times in their lives. They value their freedom, and tend to dislike feeling tied to any stallion - particularly a weak stallion, as all of the horses value strength. It's a harsh world and they migrate through harsh lands. No mare wants to be with a stallion too weak to defend the band against marauding carnivores.

It does happen from time to time, but it is usually very rare to find a stallion that abuses or intimidates his mare. The herd considers stallions that hurt or frighten their mares cowards, and inferior. They are very scornful of any male that has to resort to force to keep a female by his side. In their eyes, it means a male lacks the confidence and is too weak to prove himself a true warrior in the eyes of his females. If a male is abusive or an ineffective leader, mares can complain to the Matriarch of the herd, who will inform the Patriarch. Depending on the severity of the offense, the stallion may be temporarily shunned or even exiled.

Young fillies stay with their fathers until they are adolescent or adult -- old enough for another stallion to challenge for them. Their mothers usually stay, but if their mothers move to another band the fillies almost always stay with their fathers. It is considered unlucky and unwise for mothers to bring a young unmated mare into another stallion's band.

Young colts are expected to leave the herd at adolescence to gain experience. When they return as adults, they must challenge a stallion and win one of his mares to earn their way back into the herd. They may bring outside females home with them, but they will not be admitted back into the herd until they have battled a herd stallion for one of his mares.

Stallions are expected to lead their band to the best grazing, the freshest water and the safest places. They are responsible for the safety of their ladies and their young. If the band is attacked, the stallion is the first line of defense.

Joining

In general, males that are insecure and afraid to lose will not do well in this herd. Stallions almost always lose mares to other stallions -- and try to win them back. They can't take the desertion of a mare too personally.

Obviously, we're not requiring anyone to split up their harems, but when creating a stallion character please remember that losing a mare is pretty much inevitable. You can assume that it has happened or will happen to him. The mares take contests of strength seriously, and the likelihood of a stallion finding a harem of completely 100% loyal mares that will fawn over him forever is ... small. Losing mares is something he should be prepared for, something he watched his father experience.

Ranks

  • Patriarch (1/1)

The leader of the whole herd. He leads the council when the herd comes together to make decisions about things like where to migrate and what to do when they encounter trouble. When he isn't needed to make decisions, the patriarch lives with his band of girls.

  • Matriarch (1/1)

Head mare of the herd, the matriarch technically ranks equal with the council but tends to focus more on female concerns. She's in charge of bringing mares' complaints to the patriarch, especially when those complaints are about their warriors.

  • Council (0/4)

The four wisest stallions, chosen by the whole herd. They work with the patriarch to make the best decisions possible about things that concern the whole herd. They also have the authority to judge on smaller matters, and may be sought out by herd members to settle small disputes.

  • Warrior (unlimited)

An ordinary adult male stallion. He almost always has a harem - the only stallions who don't have had all of their mares stolen away. He leads his harem, but always takes the advice of his head mare. He is in charge of leading his band to find the freshest water, the best grazing, and the safest places. If a carnivore should attack, the warrior would have to defend his band.

  • Head Mare (unlimited)

Chosen by the rest of the females of the harem to be their leader, the head mare is generally a wise and responsible mare, concerned with the safety of all the harem females and their young. Most head mares rarely leave their warrior; they feel it is their duty to stay and keep an eye on the rest of the harem.

  • Herd Mare (unlimited)

An ordinary herd female. Herd mares are always part of a band, and thus always belong to one stallion or another. Mares that decide to go it alone are considered to have left the herd. Herd mares are free to leave the band and their warrior if they wish, and frequently move between stallions' bands, although when they have young they usually stay with the stallion until they are old enough to fend for themselves. The mares consider it risky to take daughters with them to new bands.

  • Wildling (unlimited)

A young herd male. Wildlings are expected to leave the herd at adolescence to gain experience, and return as full adults to challenge for their first herd mare.

  • Youngling (unlimited)

A young herd female. She stays with her father's herd until she is an adolescent or adult, at which point she may leave when another stallion challenges for her.
