PostPosted: Thu Sep 22, 2011 8:18 pm

Character Name: Polaris.
Type: Pokemon.

Gender: Male.
Height: 5’0".
Age: 22.
Hair Color: White, gray tinge.
Eye Color: Red.
Skin Color: Pale.
Other: His exact design is almost completely up to artist freedom; in general, he would wear fairly conservative, elegant clothing. The only thing I want him to have is a detective/police cap, but the design choice is up to the artist again.
Nature: Timid.
Ability: Super Luck.
Skill Set: Detect, Night Slash, Calm Mind, Icy Wind.

Personality:

Considerate (Positive)
Polaris really, genuinely wants to help other people, human or gijinka. He will do everything in his power to be of assistance, and can never just ignore someone in trouble. Whether he’s giving a tourist directions or warning authorities of an incoming disaster, nothing brightens his day like being able to help.

He’s very concerned with the thoughts and feelings of others, and will stop and reflect about their viewpoint before he makes his opinion known. He hates angering anyone, even if he’d be justified in doing so, and he tries to keep people pacified at all times. He’ll even tell white lies, just to avoid causing trouble.

With his friends, his natural generosity is mixed with a fear of losing them. He remembers birthdays, how people like their coffee, what colors they like, and more, and he will draw on that information to plan birthday surprises, random presents, and small gestures. Though his habit of constantly trying to give gifts can be annoying, telling him to stop is pretty effective; he can remember that people don’t like random gestures, too.

Mature (Positive)
Since he’s lived on his own for most of his life, Polaris has become very capable of handling himself. He’s responsible and thoughtful, not prone to making hasty decisions or blurting things out impulsively. He makes an effort to be polite and soft-spoken, no matter who he’s speaking to and no matter the situation.

Quiet/Passive (Neutral-Negative)
Polaris is not naturally social -- he’s gentle and quiet, and prefers to stay on the sidelines. Indeed, having the spotlight flusters him, and though he might know what needs to be done, he can’t give orders without stuttering. Though this does make him rather pleasant company in private interactions, it makes it difficult for him to be social and make friends, as he badly wants to.

He also hates confrontation. He’s not a doormat -- he’ll not do anything, or quietly slip away, rather than do something he feels is wrong -- but he is not a rebel, either. He’s too unsure to take a public stand against anything, and too afraid of hurting others to openly criticize them.

Insecure (Negative)
Despite his competence, as far as taking care of himself goes, Polaris is desperately insecure. He’s unsure of his ability (or lack thereof), his reasons for living, his place in the world, his own personality, his finances...there’s little that he is genuinely confident about. While he tries to hide his insecurities and pretend that he knows just what he’s doing, he’ll sneak uncertain looks at others, to see if they agree with him.

This also lends to him being rather clingy. He’s desperate enough for real friends and social interactions that he’ll worry about leaving them, and he’ll worry about losing them. Every whispered conversation might be about him, and every indifferent shrug or lack of interest could signal the end of one of his few relationships. This can get very annoying, very fast, and there’s a real chance that his fear of losing friends is what will make him lose friends.

Awkward (Negative)
Polaris has been completely alone for most of his life. While this has made him self-sufficient, it’s also destroyed what social skills he had before. He finds interacting with large groups incredibly stressful, though he’s more comfortable with one or two other people.

There are times when he simply doesn’t know what to say, even when he does his best to put himself in another’s shoes, and he lacks understanding of basic facets of human life and social interaction. He doesn’t understand standing in line, for example. Certain things will immediately crack his composure and reduce him to blushing and stuttering -- physical contact, flirting, and cursing (things like 'damn' or 'hell'), and probably others that he hasn't discovered yet.

He’ll often sit near a group of people and just watch them, trying to figure out the appropriate tone, facial expressions, and body language.

Strengths: Polaris is surprisingly strong and agile, and is very good at climbing. He has extremely sharp senses, and a mind suited for processing a lot of sensory information and picking out the important parts. He can also withstand the cold very well.
Weaknesses: Polaris is not a fighter, except in self defense, and he can be easily overpowered by anyone who’s larger or who has even a little combat experience. Heat (anything above 75 Fahrenheit) can quickly sap his strength and leave him listless and unable to think well.

History:

His first memory is of snow, and wind, and bare rock.

He doesn’t remember what happened to his father, and his mother never told him. She raised him in the white mountains near Mount Coronet, teaching him how to live in that hostile environment. He also learned how to recognize the signs of a disaster, how to interpret the changes in the sky and the earth. But she also warned him to never try to warn the humans who lived below, claiming that they believed that Absols were causing the disasters, not trying to give warning about them.

It was a cold, lonely existence, and it got colder and lonelier when his mother went out foraging and never came back. Though he searched for days, he was unable to find her, and from then on he was alone.

Without her there to warn him, his worry for the unaware humans below outweighed his caution, and one day he descended to the nearest settlement to try and warn them of an avalanche. But to his dismay, they chased him away, with some humans throwing spheres at him and others shouting insults.

He didn’t descend for years after that, becoming more and more isolated, until one day he slept -- and dreamed of Musharna.

Despite everything, he still desperately wanted to be able to help. And almost as powerful as that wish was his loneliness; the vision of Musharna was the first time he’d heard a real voice in years. So when he was offered the chance to be able to communicate and to not be alone any more, he leapt at it. He woke in a new, strange form, and spent months relearning everything he’d learned about living in the mountains. He had to, if he wanted to have any chance of descending safely in this new shape.

But once he was able to come down, he spent his days observing the few humans who lived there. His first real human contact was with a young human boy, who spotted him hiding in the forest and approached him fearlessly. He returned several more times to talk and give supplies to the reclusive gijinka who lived in the forest. The boy’s father was a police officer, and the boy idolized him; his stories and fierce desire to become a police officer as well struck a chord in Polaris, who’d never known any calling higher than survival.

This first encounter gave Polaris the courage to try to meet others, and the desire to find his purpose in life. With that courage gained, he prepared to leave Snowpoint City. As parting presents, the boy gave him one of his father’s extra caps, which he often borrowed to play with, and his name -- Lucas. With those memories strengthening his resolve, Polaris took his few possessions and left Snowpoint, heading for larger cities.

One reserved for random ideas!

-I want Polaris to eventually become a detective. Because it'd be cute, and I think it fits his profile as an Absol, having sharp senses and the ability to foretell disasters, and trying to warn humans :3

-I really need help with his personality -- I'm basically trying to convey a character who's shy and socially isolated, but who has genuinely good intentions and wants to at least make friends (though he'll never be a social butterfly like he might wish to be).

Zomg, hiiiiii m'darlin'!

Considerate:
Are there any exceptions to this? There are bound to be some individuals in the world that make him question his own stance and inspire a little bit of discontent. He might be nice, but there's bound to be someone who rankles him - consider this a little, perhaps?

Quiet/Passive:
I'm not sure that either of these suits him well, they make him sound weaker than your overall intentions are for him. Passive individuals aren't the most likely of individuals to become detectives! Quiet is definitely a possibility, but perhaps "Non-confrontational" might be more appropriate as opposed to passive? Given he can't ignore someone in trouble, this might ultimately lead him towards violence so a passive individual would bolt rather than persevere...whereas you can always state that while he has a preference for avoiding confrontation, he can step in when required?

Personality Trait Suggestion:
Observant? If he enjoys people watching and takes note of their tone/body language and so on then it would never hurt to add it in. It would read far better, especially if it was removed from the "Awkward" category. As a neutral-positive trait, it'll compliment his considerate side and his quiet side so he won't be lacking in balance.

Food for thought on these points and then I'll skim the history to make sure it all matches up. All in all, I don't think he's a bad concept at all, he sounds like he has a lot of potential.
