The Diet of 912

User Image
Frankfurt
Principalis sedes regni orientalis

King Radulf of Germany died shortly after his coronation, of apparently natural causes.
The princes of the kingdom and their representatives are hereby to gather in Frankfurt for the purpose of electing a new king of Germany.

OOC: I was given permission to do the Diet
PostPosted: Mon Sep 19, 2011 8:27 pm

Guntram stood quietly once more as everyone gathered to Frankfurt to find another new King of Germany. Though this time as he stood there he had a slight smile on his face knowing the this only proved that the Duke of Lotharingia was not strong enough to take charge of this great lands and his health failed him only shortly after being made king. He sighed softly as the Dukes gathered about, knowing all to well the whispers that seemed to be held in between them and the rumors that must be flying about the room by now. Guntram walked up to the front of the room after everyone of importance had come in getting ready to make his speech to the people.

"I, Guntram Hramn, The Duke of Saxony, hear by state that with support from the church that I should be the next King of Germany. As you can see already our last King, god rest is soul, was not strong enough to handle the responsibilities that come with this honorable title. His health failed him when he needed it most. You need a strong and healthy leader to take Germany to new and greater things. Please agree with me on this matter."Guntram spoke loudly and clearly knowing all would hear and seeming to show no hesitation to the people he stood with, that he was ready to be there king. He stood still in the front of the others waiting for there reactions and possible complaints to him once more trying to become the King of Germany.

To the dukes:

I was informed of the new election too late to assist, and I hope the lords already know of my decision after the King's death.
I do not wish to give my support to anyone this time, as it could lead some to think ill of me if I oppose them for the second time.

Lord Ralph, Duke of Lower Lotharingia.

Faustus once again found himself at another election to become king. He was hoping he would not have to find himself in this situation again. Once again he watched the Duke of Saxony try and reach for the crown. Faustus grinned. at his choice of words and rose. It would be a battle between the two of them it seemed, as the new duke of Lower Lotharingia would not be attending. Faustus decided not to be quite as gentle as he was the last time.

"Quiet yourself Guntram. You already make crude remarks on our last kings ability even though he is so recently deceased. Your utter disregard for tact frankly disgusts me. We do need a strong king. But we don't need a boorish selfish man who desires only power and self recognition. You would take over the kingdom, but to what end?
Your pride is too great Duke, you have fallen prey to the deadliest of sins. Giving power to someone like you would be suicide for all of us. All who would speak out against your brash ways would surely perish under your "strong hand". You can say what you will against that remark, but none of the gentlemen here are foolish enough to fall for that cruelly fashioned silver tongue.
I have no desire to become king. I never did. But I will not see a man who his own people fear rise and create tyranny. So, until a better candidate steps forward, I too must declare for the crown. May God guide you all in choosing wisely in this decision."

He glared at the other candidate. Once more he wished he did not have so many enemies. He wished he had not been forced into such an undesirable marriage, as much as he loved his wife, she could very well be the reason this kingdom fell into tyranny. Paranoia had crept in with the death of Erland. He did not know if Guntram had actually been so extreme, but he wanted to be sure that it would not happen again. If he was king, he would at least have the honor to let the man live.

Victor was quietly watching the men as they bickered, trying to get an understanding for both of them. From what he had heard, he knew these two men were the two that mattered: Like almost every other gathered at this Diet, the new Duke of Lotharingia had simply hidden behind the old king once he arrived, and also like the others he showed no signs of changing his demeanor, having not even bothered to arrive. What was left was an uneasy stalemate between a candidate none would support and another that none would rally behind.
At least without a push from a strong supporter. The fierceness of the previous Diet's stalemate was the only reason Victor had even bothered to leave Bavaria: Surely the stakes were high enough that the one who would break the stalemate would be well rewarded for his efforts. In lieu of the power Bavaria once had over the kingdom, what Victor expected to receive seemed small in comparison.

"Gentlemen," he began, "it appears we are at an all-too-familiar stalemate. Barring the convenient late arrival of another charismatic figure, I believe it would be best to approach this from a more... pragmatic standpoint."
He moved from his seat to the front of the assembly, still speaking as he walked. "Now, while Duke Guntram might be a very powerful man, there is no doubt that he would rather not fight all of the princes of the kingdom. His reputation, however, would lead most of us to be concerned for the fate of our rights as German princes should he become king: If he rules Saxony with an iron fist, who is to say he will not treat the kingdom in the same manner?"
He began to pace slowly in front of the assembly, his eyes pointed downward as he spoke. "That said, the current situation has been brought about because we have attempted to find an alternative rather than address our concerns. Unfortunately, unlike the last Diet, we seem to find ourselves without a strong alternative. While I mean no offense to my neighbor, I fear that I do not find him particularly inspiring: If he ordered a fair and just tax levied for whole kingdom's sake, given the Diet's lack of reaction to his having bravely stood up with all of our concerns in mind, I have no problem believing that most of us would disregard his call, bringing ruin to the kingdom."
Victor hoped he had not upset the Duke of Swabia, but at the moment the hearts of all of the Diet's members had to be his highest concern; any damage done could hopefully be mended in the future. "Like it or not, the very qualities that make us fear the Duke of Saxony also make him the strongest candidate for the throne. Our concerns, however, are still well founded: With a power far greater than that of his fellow dukes, none of us would be able to stand up to our future king should he turn into a tyrant. He must grant some concessions to weaken the kingship or strengthen his rival dukes to help alleviate the fear that the power we place in his hands will be used to take away all of ours."

He suddenly stopped his pacing, standing tall in front of the Diet. "So," he ended, turning his head to look at the Saxon duke, "what is your offer?"

Sofie didn't know how she made it in time to hear the opening argument of the Saxony Guntram though she was thankful she did. Her lord would be amused that it seemed Guntram was already being risen against. Though she herself found Faustus somewhat harsh she figured in the last Diet he may have been taken advantage of and there for would not allow it this time. Sofie for kept her mouth closed and would only open it when someone spoke badly about her lord. Or if a particular candidate seemed worthy of her Lords support. Though Sofie still frustrated that Ralph did not come himself she hid those feelings quite we'll with an amused smile.

When Victor stood Sofie's attention was caught all to easily. The man demanded to know what Saxony would bring to the table if he were to be elected King. Sofie wish to know these items as we'll.

Guntram stood in silence as he watched Duke Victor of Bavaria speak his mind. He shifted his weight as he began to give an answer."To ease his concerns, I offer increased privilege to the Duke of Swabia during my reign: If the governance of his duchy is left out of my hands, I believe it will help us avoid any conflicts. To Bavaria, I offer recognition of his claim to the Margraviate of Carinthia as well as a guarantee of assistance in dealing with the Magyars."

He looks over everyone in the room, focusing mostly on the two dukes."Is this agreeable, gentlemen?"

OOC: Increased Privilege for Swabia is +1, putting them at "+" and Carinthia has increased privilege of +2 putting them at "o".

Meinard called sophie's attention, whispering to her.

"Even if the Raven gets elected, it does not have to be a bad thing. Try to obtain some advantages from whoever is the new King. Lotharingia got raided by the Magyars"
