  The young challenger stopped for breath at the top of the long, steep stairway. Just ahead of them, as black as night, was the jagged opening of a cave mouth. Strange runes were carved into the ancient stone, a language long dead was flowing along the rim of the cave entrance.
The challenger started along the long dark tunnel that lead into the depths of the mountain, winding its way further and further into pitch-black oblivion. There was no light, there may never have BEEN any light in this place.
Just as the challenger was about to give up completely and turn back, their eye caught it: a small glimmer of light up ahead, the light at the end of the tunnel, as it were. The challenger ran toward the light at a dead sprint, desperate to be bathed in light once again.
The challenger broke through, and stopped. They stood in a wide, open cavern lit by torches all along the high walls. The walls gave way to dozens of smaller tunnel openings, all spread out along the high, domed walls. There, at the far end of the cave was a large chair, carved into the stone wall itself. And sitting in the chair was a young man.
The man stood up from his throne of earth and brushed his blonde locks out of his eyes. He gazed at the challenger with a piercing ice-blue stare.
"Welcome to the Howling Cavern Gym, Trainer. Have you come to test your grit? Will you climb out of this cavern as a winner? Or will you wander these dark, damp tunnels for the rest of eternity? You decide, Trainer. Now come, it is time to test the sands!"
The gym leader leapt high into the air, tossing three pokeballs high above him. As he landed, an ear-shattering howl filled the air, a scream as old as the ages. The wind came rushing through the tunnel openings along the cavern wall, whipping the dust off of the ground in an angry sheet, spinning and swirling, screaming as it went.
As quick as it came, it left, leaving the cave floor clear of sand, and exposing the arena carved into the cave floor, polished smooth from the years. The challenger gaped in awe as the three pokeballs landed on the arena floor and burst open in a flash of light.
Chaos smiled at his newest opponent.
"What are you waiting for? Afraid to get a little dirty?"
