The nights young, she could go out if she wanted to. Her mother was fast asleep and wouldn’t be waking up, far too tired from picking up the pieces of the disaster. Lestari was still awake though, grim faced she looked down at the blank piece of paper in front of her on her desk. She wanted to write what had happened, needed to write how she felt. Sara had tried to warn her about this, tried to prepare her, but nothing could have possibly ever readied her for being a hostage. The tears came up and dared to spill, Lestari picked up the quill, dipped it into the oily ink and posed the quill above the paper. A drop spilled onto the paper, Lestari blinked and began to write.

"Dear Diary, Lestari scratches out the diary part, she feels it’s to girly and childish, instead she writes,

"Dear Journal, war is an ugly thing. I got a taste of it the other day, Sara went out and we met with some very powerful people, and then things went downhill."

Lestari remembered as the Noble general had held her hostage, and for the first time in her life she thought she was going to die. It was a scary thought, to know she had been sheltered all her life from this, and to come face to face with it so suddenly, was some could say. Almost life changing.

"The emperor is dead the priestess said, the news will spread to the streets like a poison. What is there to fight for now? A new emperor has to be announced, and no one knows if he will be for the Nobles or if he will favor the Legion. I never thought that my life would get this complicated, though I am happy that I won't have to worry so much anymore about Nobles. I am surprised to have come out without a scratch... Yet anyways."

The blade that had been brought to her neck when she was a hostage had no left a mark, everyone had gone their separate ways. Lestari chuckled, her mother was far more harsh. She’d been slapped before, more than once and those often left a wound deeper than the eye could see.

"I will continue to follow my path however, and will graduate one day. I cannot wait for that to happen, to finally be able to look at my mother and tell her that I have not become what she has longed for me to be. She will be angry no doubt, but I know that the path of a mother and wife will never fit me. It would not be wise to marry me now, for I would be consistently unhappy, I would not want me kids to live what I have."

One day yes, she might want kids, might want someone to permanently warm her bed, even though right now that idea irked her. Lestari did not want to live the horrors of her fathers marriage to her mother, theirs was full of unhappiness. Her father might try to hid it, but everyone knew Sinta had turned cold long ago. Les did not want to end up like that, and with her father allowing her to go to fighting school, maybe she’d be able to find someone she really loved. Not that she was denying her father having any Love for her mother, but her mother had none for her father.

"I think I should try and get some sleep again, morning is going to be here all too quickly and I need to rest. I will continue to write, I have decided I would like something that I can read years later and see how I have evolved. I think this will help me grow as a Lunarian, and I am looking forward to reading what my young self had to say about life."

Lestari pauses and chuckles to herself.

"I've completely forgotten to talk about Sara and what she has done for me. I shall remember to mention her next time I write to you, she is important, almost like a sister to me. Now I go back to bed, hoping nightmares won’t plague me.

Goodnight,
Lestari"

It had a been a few months now that Lestari was out and about freely with Sara, her mother thinking she was out doing priestly things. Les had not touched her journal since her first entry, either too busy or too tired to write in it. Tonight however, after a quiet evening with her family with Sinta early to bed, Lestari felt like settling down and writing.

Back in her rooms quit space, Lestari went to work at undressing herself, layer upon layer of silks and colourful fabrics fell away from her as Lestari undid the clothing. Fully in the nude, Lestari stepped away from the pile of clothing at her feet and moved to get into her night gown. The night as still a little cold, the winds fingers playing across her skin and sending shivers and Goosebumps across her arms. Les slipped hurriedly into the gown and went to her desk to clean off her face. She had to first take out the pins and sticks from her hair, shaking her long blue hair free to let it tumble down to her mid back. Next came her makeup with, she washed everything with a warm cloth. It was hard not to reflect about life when your reflection starred back at you. Lestari starred into her own dark purple eyes and tried to smile, hand going up to brush the pale grey and while scales under her eyes. Lestari`s eyes gave away to a sadness and frustration she felt, but she couldn`t escape the prison yet.

Feeling more like herself, Les moved through her room with an ease to find her journal hidden under her clothing drawers. It was the only place she`d managed to hide it from everyone, even if her drawers were probably used quite a bit by a few people. Not only did her mother go through her clothing, but sometimes Citra borrowed things, and the maids put away her clothing. None the less, Les had believed it to be the best place to hide such a thing. Grabbing it quickly, Les jumped onto her bed and got comfortable.

“Dear Journal, it’s been a while, how are you?”

Sometimes, Lestari felt silly that she thought her journal could be an actual person sitting beside her and simply listening to her rants.

“The last time we spoke, I said I’d talk about Sara. First, her whole name is actually Sarangerel. I’m not really sure of her last name to be honest, but I’ll have to ask her next time I see her. She has an earthy skin tone, with green eyes and scales, and come to think of it I think her hair is a dark green. She’s always in a dress, and has tattoos!

I thought I wasn’t going to like her, but she’s like the big sister I never had. Granted Citra also makes a good older sister, but she’d married to my brother and it’s not the same thing. Sara actually let me come along with her; did I mention she has a stick? We actually fought when we met, I don’t mean like punching and stuff, well I did try to hit her, but that’s not the same. She whacked me with her stick and everything, she has a wolf too.

In any case, she lets me come along, and tried to protect me when we did the whole emperor and getting hostage type of thing. I think I met someone she really likes, as in, someone that she keeps close to her heart. She won’t admit to it, but the way they were looking at each other and everything, it’s hard to miss the looks. I thought priest weren’t allowed to do a bunch of things, but it looks like Sara has a bunch of freedom.
Freedom I both envy and adore her for since she shares it with me. I really am grateful for her; else I’d be stuck in the same rut. Soon, I think I will be able to venture into the world as a fighter alone! No more will I have no knowledge of the world! Sara said she’d help with it, so I am confident I’ll be fine.

Goodnight,
Lestari"

Solo battle - beginning of the end

The day had started more than annoying; you could say it had started in a manner that could only enrage Lestari for the whole day. Not only had her mother woken up in a foul mood, but most of her siblings had had little to no sleep because Citra had been in pain all night. Most of the men in the home had shuffled out early to avoid the chaos Sinta was about to drop on everyone. Unlucky, Lestari was the only one left at home for Sinta to torture all day. Considering the older Lunarian found the home dirty, and the maids weren’t cleaning fast enough, Les was put to work rather quickly and rudely. Usually Les wouldn’t put up a fight about it, because usually Sinta left her alone, but the woman was buzzing around her like a vulture to a carcass today.

“I’m going out with Sara soon mother, I need to get going.” Using the counter to help herself up, Les threw the rag into the bucket and gave her mother an annoyed stare. Sinta starred back at her, anger flashing in her eyes momentarily as she waved a hand. “The priestess can wait, what else do they do all day anyways but wait?” This time it was Lestari who was annoyed, and it showed. “If you keep giving me that look Lestari I’m going to have to wipe it off your face.” It was a regular threat coming from her mother, something she’d grown up with every time her mother wasn’t pleased with her. Lestari was tired of her mother’s restraints, her mother’s control, and her mother’s constant trying to make her into something she never would be, she would never be able to live up her expectations, and she was tired of pretending she could.

“I’d like to see you try mother.” A challenge, Les knew her mother had taken it as an insult to her status as not only head of the family, but also as a parent. The hate in Sinta’s eyes started to churn as she stared down her daughter, lips in a grim line. Would she act? Lestari had no idea, but seeing as she wasn’t really reacting to what she’d said, Les turned around to head upstairs to start getting changed. “Lestari Putri if you walk out you will regret it.” Les was going to call her mother out on the bluff, as she turned her head towards her mother with some form of reply, Sinta had grabbed onto her shoulder, digging her nails into her cloth to hit the sensitive flesh under and pulled her back. Lestari wheeled back, grabbing onto the counter for support as she back peddled right into her mother.

“Don’t you dare talk to me in that tone.” Sintas voice hissed low into Lestari’s ears, her grip tightening causing Les to try and squirm away from her mother. “Let go of me.” There was no way she could use the fighting skills she’s gained in school against her mother, not unless she wanted to hurt her and go through hell afterwards with her family. However, she just couldn’t ignore this anymore. Lestari was tired of her mother’s tyranny, if she was going to use force so could she. Her training was kicking in, it was going to get ugly if her mother didn’t back down.

In her mind, Lestari had the steps already planned out. First with her other hand, she grabbed onto Sinta’s wrist, making sure to lock her fingers tightly where her bone meet her hand and pulled while she twisted it at the same time. It was an awkward manoeuvre, but one that got enough of her mother’s death rip off of her so that Lestari could shove her mother with the shoulder she’d grabbed onto and moved away from her. Lestari faced her mother, her own face grim now. Sinta was nursing her wrist, looking at her daughter with a look of hurt before it turned into something evil. Something that Lestari had never seen in her life from anyone.

As if time had slowed, her mother came running at her, body slamming her to the ground and sending both of them onto the wooden floor. Not only had Lestari snapped something in her mother, but she’d caused Sinta to pretty much attack her. Lestari’s only advantage was that her mother was wearing so much material it was making it hard for her to get any hits, Les on the other hand was able to grab onto her mother’s exposed neck and push her to the side, hitting her mother’s head onto the wooden boards. Sinta cried out, eyes closing as her daughter smack her head into the kitchen cupboards once more, and then a third time to make sure her mother was out of it so she could wiggle out.

Bringing her knee up, Lestari put her foot on the middle of her mother’s chest and kicked her away, pushing herself even further from the crazy woman in the process. She stood up and approached her mother who was clutching her head; she looked up to Les and moved away from her. “I’m going out mother.” Lestari glared down at her and turned her back to leave; she heard her mother shuffling on the floor but never looked back. She was going to get it tonight, unless her mother stayed quiet about it.

Solo Battle - Noble Win

So the day had finally come, her mother had found a husband to stick Lestari to. She was supposed to meet him tonight, which was why she was getting all dressy and such in room now. Her face was in a permanent grimace, she could hear the rustling that was going on downstairs for the preparations, and it did not help her darkening mood. Her mother had invited the family over for an official meeting, apparently he was three years older than she was, and their family would help her mother in some way or another. Lestari didn`t know how yet, but she was being played as a pawn and no one was helping her against the queen. None of her brothers, not even her father were trying to talk her mother out of it.

"Lestari, wipe that frown off of your face right now. Your future husband is coming, and I need you wed as soon as possible. What will he think of you when he see’s you’re a sulking little girl?" Sinta had appeared at her door, arms crossed as her mother`s gaze bore into Lestari`s reflection through the mirror. Les`s tongue lashed out against her teeth as she clamped her mouth shut, dare she say anything she would be hit for sure. However, her anger had rendered her brazen, it was not fear that caught Sinta`s eyes, but pure fury.

"Then let him be unhappy with me, what do I care? He’ll marry me because his parents need him too, because you’re working with them. You just don’t care beyond her own ambitions," Lestari got up, pushing the small bench so hard that it tumbled to the ground, sending the maids scrambling away from her as Les turned to face her mother. "I don’t want to marry him, I don’t want to be forced to marry some random guy, and you certainly can’t make me!" The moment the words left her lips, she was already regretting them. Sinta was immobile, not saying a word, but she knew that a storm was brewing under the façade. Nothing happened for a long time, mother and daughter starred at each other.

"How dare you speak to me like this," Sinta hissed through her clenched teeth, but her voice was low, dangerously low. "You have no right you little ungrateful child!" The older Lunarian took a threatening step into the room, finger rising to point at Lestari. "Who do you think you are? Who do you think gives you all this?" Lestari watched in horror as her mother approached her and raised her hand, Les closed her eyes just as her mother hand was reaching her cheek to hit her. The blow sent her head to the side, her hand immediately went to her cheek to cover where her mother had hit her. Sinta wasn`t done though, she was quick to assault Lestari with her hands, but Lestari`s training kicked in from the academy. She pushed her mother back in one large push, sending the woman to the ground.

"I will kill you!" Lestari did not expect her mother to lunge her so quickly; her back hit the small vanity sending it crashing to the ground with both women. There was no choice; she had to defend herself. As Sinta`s open hands turned to fists, so did Lestari`s, it became an all out brawl against her mother as they tangled in their fabrics. Their screams and banging hadn`t gone unheard, Lestari knew her father was running through the house and up the stairs just as quickly, but it was all too late. Sinta had split her lip open, her cheeks and eyes would be bruised from the assault and now her hands were around Lestari`s neck squeezing the life out of her. As much as she tried to pry them off, she couldn`t, her mother had the look of a crazy person in her eyes.

"Sinta!" Lestari thought she heard her father’s voice in the distance, but she`d been far too long without hard now and her vision was going blurry. Hands clasp around her mother and pulled her off, pushing her to the side and then there was a loud smack as someone`s hand connected with someone else`s flesh. Lestari turned onto her side and coughed as her eyes began to tear up. "Enough!" Her father’s face came into view, he helped her up gently, worry all over his face. Someone gasped loudly, and Les turned to see Citra starring at her, Guntar looked grim and behind them her other brothers. Her mother was holding her cheek as she stared at her father. He had actually hit their mother? That was certainly a first.

"Sinta I want you to cancel tonight’s dinner, we need to talk…" He wouldn’t even look at his wife; his eyes were trained on Lestari as he held up her face for examination with a finger under her chin.

"But husband, we can`t cancel. This is Lestari`s future husband." Sinta actually sounded like a real wife, her voice was soft as if she didn’t want to further infuriate him. Bambang turned only slightly towards her. "Cancel it. I will not repeat myself, now leave us." Everyone shuffled out of the room, even Sinta who took a little longer left them. Lestari starred at her father, he sighed loudly and went to get a towel. "Whatever will I do with you Lestari? My only daughter and causing more ruckus than the boys ever did." He returned with a bowl of warm water and a towel, and took a seat across from her. He started by undoing the pins and things that kept her hair up, and then began cleaning her face.

"So beautiful and getting so much older Lestari. How are classes?"

"Good, but they didn’t save my life against mother." Her father held an amused look on his face.

"All done, off to bed with you now. I can’t promise to keep your mother away from this whole wedding thing, but I also know you’ll be graduating in some time now and then you’ll be far from home on your own. Lestari, please try to behave until you’ve left, I can only keep your mother away for so long." He kissed her one last time on the cheek and left her to get changed, but he was right. If she wanted to stay alive until she graduated and got away, she needed to at least keep her mother pleased for the time being. It was the only way she`d be able to get away from the wedding.
