So, I'm about to make a big equipment upgrade, but I have a few options and I'm not too sure what direction to take. This will be my first big upgrade, so I really want to make the best decision. Currently I shoot using a Canon EOS Kiss X [Rebel XTi], a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8, and a Canon Speedlite 430exII. I do well with what I've got, but I always want to do better. So the question comes down to this: better camera, or better glass? I'm looking at the EOS 60D and EOS 5D MKII as camera options, but the price difference would affect the upgrade of my lens; if I get the 60D, I will be able to afford a Canon EF 135mm f/2.0L to go with it. If I get the 5D MKII, I will have a great full-frame semi-pro camera, but most likely won't be able to upgrade my lens for a while. The 60D is great, but I want to contract more commercial work, and a full-frame camera would make this much easier, but a $100 lens sitting on it kind of defeats the purpose; the 50mm can make some great quality images, but it just doesn't compare to L glass, especially on a full-frame camera. I was looking at the first 5D as an option, but I also want a camera that can record in HD, which the 5D cannot do, but the 5DMKII and 60D can.
I've got somewhat of an idea of what I'd like to do, but I would love to get some input first. What do you guys think?

Ok I'm really late here. Have you made your decision yet?

I just thought I would throw out that there might be a new "entry level" full frame camera coming up in canon's lineup. It's still just rumors but we should hear more by the end of October. Rumor has it that it'll be cheaper than the current 5D Mark II's starting price.
So it might be smart to wait this one out.

On another note I think that a 5D Mk II with it's kit lens is enough as a stand alone kit. A 5DMk II with only a 50mm f/1.8 EF might be cutting it a little close. Then again if this lens is currently enough for your needs then that might not be much of a problem to you.
As for the quality. Unless you plan on having your photos blown out to large sizes on print I wouldn't really worry about it. The 50mm F1.8 is a little soft on a full frame but it's still plenty acceptable. And not to mention that sometimes (female portraits) it's much nicer to have than say.. a sharp 100mm F2.8 L IS USM Macro. This may be subjective though.

I did already make my decision; I went with the EF 135mm f/2 L lens, and will most likely be upgrading my camera to a 60D in a month, and wait it out on the full frame camera. I'm definitely happy with my decision, as the lens works great with my camera [I just need to get adjusted to the new focal length]. I took this photo with my new lens about 45 minutes after buying it yesterday:

good choice on the 135mm2L USM ... that is one great lens

my wife loves that lens ... epic bokeh and sharp as hell

getting the glass first is a better choice... am sure it will push up your shooting even w/ the entry level camera. Getting the semi-pro is great too.. the 60D is a good camera and can perform well minus the full-frame.
