What do you guys do when you practice? Do you even have a routine? I find that it helps if I set specific goals before I start and have a clear objective on what I want to do. What about you?

Well, I worked my way up to it by noodling for a long time, playing along with whatever was around me making rhythm, neighbor's stereo, washing machine, radio, etc. Next to messing around I only got strict with exercises to get comfortable with picking technique, so basic chromatic exercise with a metronome served me well. Try playing along with your favorite stuff, eventually you'll get it, my goal was always to be able to play Joe Satriani stuff, now I'm playing over just about any backing track I can find for fun, and it's practice until I blow myself away with how close it really is. Tabs for songs you like are a great way to learn too, just a little riff here and there makes a big difference in your playing.
