"Kali, no!" Howl followed the older girl hurriedly. "Leave her alone!" The blonde boy went to stand in front of Laveda protectively. He knew Kali wouldn't really risk performing actual magic because of the baby within her, but he wouldn't allow Kali to scare Laveda. "If you want to hex her, you'll hex me first," he bristled. He looked back at Laveda and shot her an apologetic, reassuring smile.
"You just caught her in a bad mood," he said. "She's usually much friendlier. Kali, stop it! From what I've heard, you've got the better end of the deal," he huffed at his friend. "If he hadn't kicked you out, you wouldn't have met Lance. Or me."
The wizard ran a hand through his hair. "It's obvious your father's been lying to her. Jeez, Kali! He's been abusing and neglecting the girl and you act like it's her fault he made a decision--probably the best one he ever made for you! She doesn't know what she is! She's terrified of magic! She's timid and she acts like she's never been allowed outside before!"
