Recently I met up with an old friend of mine who I used to game with. After asking what games I'd been playing--my reply being the Sims 3 because it was what I happened to be playing at the time--he proceeded to call my 'gamerhood' into question, complete with a smug expression all over his face.
So, it got me wondering: what criteria do you think qualifies a person as a gamer? Is it the number of games/consoles owned and played? Does the platform you play on make a difference? Could skill level determine whether or not you are a 'gamer? Or is it the type of genre played?

Well there's alot of types of gamers, but to a basic one. You just have to know what your doing in a game. Ex: Don't run and gun in a splinter cell game. I'm more of a casual gamer. i don't care if I lose, I just play for fun biggrin

How about: "someone who plays games." I dislike the way people argue the topic you have brought up. I dislike that people like your friend do what your friend did. It gives me the impression that they do that to make it seem like they are superior or that the games they play are better than yours. Let's look at it like this. Game - Noun: 1. An amusement or pastime. One who voluntarily engages in an amusement or pastime, regardless of what it is or how many or how often or any of that other stuff, in my eyes, is a "gamer". You play The Sims? Oh, well greetings to you, gamer. You joined a guild specifically for people who play games? Welcome aboard, gamer! I made that personification thread for everyone. I did not discriminate. If you decided to describe a persona that was akin to a Sim who did things that Sims do, then that would be your persona and I would appreciate it for what it is, no matter what it is.
They say that a true musician appreciates music in all of its forms, even if the musician himself/herself doesn't like or agree with the music they hear. Just because Lady Gaga doesn't compose a booming orchestral piece akin to Beethoven, does that mean she is not a musician? Of course not! Despite that a musician may not like the sound of rap, if he or she still respects the music for the fact that it is what it is, music, then that is the mark of a true musician. In that same light, if you play The Sims every once in a while, does that mean you're not a gamer? Don't be silly. A true gamer should appreciate and respect everyone of all playing fields and skills, not just their own. That, in my opinion, is the mark of a true gamer.

it's not what you play that makes you a gamer it's just do you game that makes you a gamer or so shizuka's literate paragraph says. if not, that's what i say makes you a gamer.

Your post is exactly how I view each and every gamer (and you're dead on with that music analogy). It's just that comments like my friend's don't sit well with me either because gamers come in all skill levels, ages, play styles, genders, etc. in my opinion. But sometimes I get the impression from some other gamers that if you fancy Professor Layton or Phoenix Wright over Killzone, Halo or Gears of War then you are not 'hardcore' enough and therefore stripped of your 'title'.
I play games for fun, I play because I love them and I have no doubt that's the core reason of why others are gamers too. But this superiority complex that some have only takes away from the general enjoyment of games. I really don't even see the rhyme or reason in this 'dispute'. But I just wanted to hear other opinions on this, so thanks in advance to anyone else who posts.

You don't have to play "hardcore" games to be a gamer. rolleyes What your friend said was stupid. I think as long as you enjoy video games as a frequent past-time, no matter what kind of game it is, you can be considered a gamer.

Shizuka Mizu How about: "someone who plays games."
This. But nowadays, you're only classed as a gamer if you've played some sort of shooter. As most 'popular' games these days are shooters. ¬_¬ I think if you play games regularly, then yes, you're a gamer.

Last Showdown o_o I agree.. except for cell phone games. And hey.. I know you! I don't think mobile phone games count towards anything. Unless it's like a NES game, or tetris. Yes, I know you too.

I think anyone is a gamer as long as they own a console and use it for something other than watching DVDs.. which somehow damages the system anyway.

I honestly define a gamer by
if they play a game for more than 3 hours at a time - gamer Are obsessed with 1 or more game series - gamer Own a console or handheld - gamer Have a pet cat- kitty!
Sorry I forgot what I was doing. I shoved someone in a game store just once cause he was having a discussion with my gf and she said "I don't really like console games I prefer handheld" and he told her all this crap about how she's not a gamer and how handheld sucks and how easy the games are. She didn't care about being told she wasn't a gamer, it was dissing her handhelds that made her upset.
I came over pushed him away from her and told him off. Never disrespect a handheld gamer. They know more about strategy and tactics and their handheld games are actually harder.
Sowwy another pet peeve of mine. Dissing handhelds and making my gf upset. Oh but screw your friend sims is the bomb! You get addicted to that series and don't leave your house for months at a time. Now I gotta play the sims again. lol

Glad you stood up for your gf, too. I probably would've been walking out of that store wearing a nice pair of handcuffs if things went too far, lol.
