The earth was soft and moist under her fingers. Lorend sat back on her heels with her trowel poking into the turned up dirt. Smudges of dirt marked her face where a dirty finger had rubbed. She brushed back her short hair and looked at the jar of bugs. It was a decent selection for a morning's catch. There would certainly be some screaming coming from the girl's barracks tonight.

Lorend gave a wolfish grin remembering her sister's screams when she left 'presents' for them. Would these weyrbrats be just as good? They'd find out. She gave her hands a brush across her damp pants, some of the dirty clinging to her knees fell off. It was time to hide her crawlies until the time and then get cleaned up quickly.

S'laigh wasn't sure what it was she'd been expecting to find out here, but a young woman collecting bugs in a jar certainly wasn't it. Adding to her confusion - and just a hint of apprehension - was the almost gleeful way she brushed the dirt from her knees and looked furtively about.

With a cheeky grin, S'laigh crossed her arms sternly over her chest and placed herself quietly behind the other girl, waiting to be noticed.

Lorend bent over and to retrieve her trowel and jar of crawlies. They were certainly an active lot. The livelier the crawlies, often the livelier the resulting screams. She almost chuckled to herself as she turned. Lorend stopped dead in her tracks as she realized that she wasn't alone anymore. A quick look at the shoulder knots told her, this was a rider. Trying to hide her nervousness, she cleared her throat and tried to keep her voice low, imitating a boy.

"Uh, morning rider.... Is there anything I can do to help you?" Discretely she moved the jar behind her.

It was a struggle to keep her stern look in place. She wasn't even entirely sure what she was doing - she was a weyrling; it wasn't as though she had any real authority here. Yet she couldn't resist ribbing the girl a bit; she was clearly mischievous by nature, and S'laigh had not yet decided whether she liked that sort of person or not. After all, she'd been fairly sheltered before going to the Healer hall, and mischief there could be dangerous, and had been looked upon with deep displeasure.

"What exactly are you doing with those crawlers?" One eyebrow arched, a wry look seeking explanation.

The candidate shifted a little on her feet. It wasn't like she was doing anything bad, digging in the gardens weren't frowned upon. Lorend tried to keep her face straight as the rider identified the contents of her jar. She pondered for a moment, analizing the question.

"Well right now I'm putting them in a jar Rider. I haven't hurt any of them if that's what your worried about." Injured bugs wouldn't do the job she wanted to them to do. She looked side to side, seeking a way to remove herself from the rider.
