If she was being ridiculously unhelpful, Talulah didn't care. She did not want to remember. A bad thing had happened and she wanted to forget. Hoever it was hard to forget when Vlad was in your face demanding answers.
She looked shocked by the rough treatment, her eyes flying wide as he shook her. But she did not try to escape his grip… not until he reached for the package. “Stop it!” She twisted away from him; desperately holding onto cloth wrapped knife. Tali wasn’t even sure why anymore; it was such a terrible item. But it was hers. She had taken it. That night...
“He was going to hurt Lilt Albridge and I couldn’t let him do that so I followed him and then he died…” And Talulah burst into tears.

Estra's hands had crept downwards to clutch at Bella's - momentarily heedless of the other's willingness or otherwise - anxiously as her two most favourite people in the world went at it hammer and tongs, but when Vlad grabbed Tali by the shoulders...and then Tali -
"Vlad," she cried, breaking away and dashing across the room to cower protectively, if unhelpfully, over the goldfish, "stop it, please!" It surprised her even as she said it, so unused she was to counteracting the crow; pressing close against Tali, she tried again, words wavering, "C-can't we have dinner first? The stew's getting cold..."
It was not getting cold, simmering merrily away on the stovetop, but it seemed to Estra a convenient excuse.

Tali's attachment to that object was too odd to ignore, but the rather abrupt expiry of said murderer in her summarised story struck Vlad as even stranger. Using his regular Estra mental filter, he plainly ignored her pleas, still focused on the emerging details of this rather bizarre encounter. " - then he died?" he queried, the possibilities ticking through his head. How? "Surely you didn't kill him - who did?"

Estra’s interjection gave Talulah enough comfort that she could start fighting back the tears. She let out a few more sobs and then fell quiet, focusing desperately on how pretty Estra’s hair was. But of course Vlad had to keep asking questions.
“It wasn’t Mr. Faris!” She answered quickly in defense of her new friend. Tali sniffed and wiped a few tears away. “He just died…” She slowly unwrapped her little bundle. The cloth dropped away to reveal the ceremonial knife. “I didn’t want that to happen.”
She stared at the knife, looking dejected and close to further crying.

For a brief moment Vlad considered whether Mr. Faris was a key player in this sordid story, but with Tali's eye-witness account and her current obstructive over-emotional state, he shelved it for future reference - instead, his eyes fell upon the blade and he rapidly assessed its worksmanship.
"Talulah," he said steadily, "give me that knife." A brief glance up and he found her again, almost in tears, and sighed.
"...please." The crow growled, a little less stern than before. He was - just that bit - unwillingly impressed that she'd been toting a rather potent weapon around all this time. "I know a few craftsmen, and I could ask around to find who made or bought it."

Talulah shook her head and looked close to taking a step back but then… the magic word.
The goldfish relented, carefully turning the knife around and offering it to Vlad by the handle. “I… I would like it back… please.” She didn’t really know why she wanted it to be returned. It was terrible thing. But at least if it was with her, no one could do bad things with it ever again.
“I was all alone last night so I followed the men with the funny robes and… why would anybody want to kill somebody?” She looked genuinely puzzled and terribly sad. After a moment she turned to Estra, looking for a hug.

Estra had been staring at the knife in unmitigated horror; Tali had been carrying that around all this time? A-and he died? Her mind did not get as far as 'who died', only that it must have been unbearable for the goldfish, and, oh. She folded her up urgently as Talulah turned to her, even the sweeping wings of her dress seeming to curl around the girl. Vlad could deal with it, she hardly wished to look upon the gleaming silver more.

"...thank you." Vlad was wringing out his quotient for compassion and politeness today. "I don't know what you'll do with it, but I'll give it back when I'm done." He seized the handle and slid the offending object into his hands, turning the knife thoughtfully. Nearly a murder weapon - he could see it in the rather potent blade, and took in Talulah's words. He'd evidently exhausted that quotient as he snapped, "only you would follow funnily-robed murderers when you're alone, you moron." I can see why anybody would want to kill somebody. He frequently felt like doing away with Certain People, possibly in the room, would make life much more peaceful...
At least he kept his last thought to himself.

Bella only watched helplessly as the two fought, but a gasp escaped her lips as she watched Tali reveal the silver dagger within the bundled cloth. Why... was she carrying such a thing?
Memories of that night flashed through her mind, visions of that golden cage, those... city people. She had so many questions, but she wasn't sure if now was the time to bring it up, a-and...
Loud popping sounds startled her, and she jumped and gave a small squeak. She quickly whipped around, and identified the source being the pot of stew simmering on the stove. It seemed it was starting to boil over.
"U-um, I-I think the stew is ready..." she stammered, hoping it would change the topic of the conversation.

Their new friend's interjection jolted Estra out of her misery. "The stew!" she gasped, running across the room to the stove and desperately pinching the flame down. Another few angry pops, and a series of hisses later, it piped down, resuming a harmless simmer. Relief. Pasting a bright smile on, she turned and declared, "Dinner is definitely ready now."

Talulah did not respond to Vlad again, she merely turned her face away, and when Estra rushed off to tend to the bubbling pot, Tali followed after her. “”I’ll get some bowls.” She said quietly after the stew had been saved, grabbing four from the cupboards and putting them within easy reach of Estra.

Vlad picked a rag off the table, whipping it out then winding it around the knife, before thoughtfully tucking it into his worn work satchel. Well, there was another piece of the puzzle...whether or not it would assist in finding a solution, he did not know. But since Talulah had evidently blurted out all she knew, he deigned not to bother her again tonight. After all, she was now uncharacteristically quiet, which served his mind well. With a brisk sweep of his arm he pulled the chairs out for the ladies, paused to consider the wisdom of his forthcoming action, and retrieved the good silverware he'd poach - recovered on his daily rounds.

Watching as the three began to setting up the table only made her feel more left out, as she wasn't sure what exactly to do. Would it seem out of place if she started helping out? But... she wasn't really sure what she could do... but wouldn't it be rude to just sit and let them serve her? No, that wouldn't do either...
Completely at a loss, she only stood off to the side as to not get in their way, and watched quietly as everything was being prepared. At least... they weren't fighting anymore...

Table set, Estra stole over to Bella and took both her hands, tugging her over to a seat with a bright, desperate smile. "It's vegetable stew! Oh, I hope you will like it - my cooking doesn't always come out so well, but vegetable stew should be alright. I've done it before many times, and Tali's said it's rather good, so it should be alright. Let's eat, shall we?"
