I think my brain may be working overtime at the moment, but I was thinking of sin recently and I would like to know how you define it.

Without copying and pasting from the bible (doing so is fine, I won't lecture anyone, but it's not what I'm asking for) how would you describe sin? How do you know when you see an act that it is a sin and how do you know when you perform it?

There is a difference between seeing and performing. In seeing you have your own perspective about what someone is doing or, in some cases, what you did from third person perspective. For example, say a guy runs into a building and in one punch knocks another guy out. Someone sees that or worse hears about it and that's it, no more to the story known. However, for the person who punched the guy, there must have been a reason. Does that reason matter?

On the topic of hearing, when someone explains something you only get a portion of what that person saw. It's like reading the summary of a summary of a book, bits of information that may be vital to analyzing the story are missing. For example, when hearing about it, the person may neglect to say that the guy who ran in and knocked a guy out was crying. That one little detail implies that the guy he knocked out may have hurt him in some way. A little thing like that can add a different opinion about the story. Better to see than to hear, but that's not the topic here.

I always figure sin to be the cause of suffering. And the more direct the act is in causing that suffering, the more of a sin it may be. That's just my take on it, however. You murder someone in cold blood... a sin... you beat your children to the point of bruising... a sin. You tell lies with the intent of hurting people... a sin. Using the tools God gave you to help someone in pain, ease their suffering and make the lives of others better today than they were yesterday... a little harder for me to conceive as sin.

Hmm Sin to me,is flawness.

Sin itself is a perfect, unperfect if that makes sense.

we all slip yes, thats the unperfectness in us.

My view on Sin,is well,Sin is well the flaw in us,to me,i never really believed in us being perfect, hell i don't Consider any God perfect either though.

I don't care what God you say is,i bet i will find a problem with them in some way xD.

anyway pretty much sin to me is the flaw

That does make sense.

The way I see it any God that is made by humans will be flawed because humans are flawed. If a belief someone has in a God, including Christianity, includes a flaw in God then there is a flaw in the belief system and/or teachings. I do believe there is a perfect God, but I also believe that he is often misunderstood by imperfect people and thus flaws are created where they do not truly exist.

To extend on the note of people's misunderstandings creating nonexistent flaws, that would be a part of human imperfection.

EDIT: Forgot to say, that's a good definition of it, Zen. In my opinion.

Sin is basically the absence of God's love in Christian tradition. "Missing the mark" is the literal translation in the New Testament. This means "5 points to the left" or missing the target all together and aiming in the wrong direction. If your thoughts and actions have the intent of being hateful, mean, selfish toward your neighbor (which is everyone) then it's a sin. Everyone does this, even when trying to hit the mark. It's human to miss the mark and even miss the target altogether. What matters is what you do after you become aware of missing the mark and how you can improve your aim (or in some cases find the target).

The hardest part I have personally when finding the target is trying to find a healthy balance of personal constructive criticism and being down right abusive to myself. There are some days I just think that I'm the most horrible monster on the face of the planet. Fortunately I have friends and family that help me from falling to the trap of being self-degrading. I have to remind myself that I'm forgiven for my wrongs and try to learn from my mistakes rather than dwell on them and get stuck in a quagmire of guilt.

I used to be like that, captain. It took allot of work, but I forgive myself easier now. I just lecture myself for about half an hour before letting it go in the hopes of basically training myself to do better.

I do like that definition of sin. Missing the mark is a good way of putting it.
