Hi there! This is my quest for a Snorlax, one of my favorite Pokemon in the entiiire world. Feel free to leave crits! They're very much loved and appreciated. <33
PostPosted: Thu Sep 01, 2011 12:53 pm

Character Name: Oswald (Oz, please.)
Type: Pokemon
Species: Snorlax
Region: N/A
Trainer Type: N/A
Gender: Male
Height: 6'5"
Age: Early thirties.

Hair Color/Style: Dark blue, mebbe. I leave the style up for artist interpretation! I'm picturing it as a scruffy sort of cut, no longer than just below the eyes at most. <3 Here's some general examples of what I like, but I'm not sold on anything. [X] [X] [X]
Eye Color: Whatever looks nice! Perhaps green? I don't know.. <3 Something bright and eye-catching.
Skin Color: Caucasian. He can sleep in the sun all day and never burn. Pokemon are wonderful, mysterious things, aren't they?
Other: He's a big, beefy guy. Muscled, but might also have a bit of a gut! Still handsome though, of course. <3 Might have some scruff on his face, can't really imagine him bothering to shave. Probably the Snorlax ears/maybe the claws on his hands? ARTIST INTERPRETATION, YAAAY.

Nature: Lax
Ability: Thick Fat
Skill Set:

1. Earthquake (ground)
"A powerful move that damages all Pokemon nearby. It deals double damage if a Pokemon has used Dig and is underground."

2. Hyper Beam (normal)
"Hyper Beam inflicts damage. A recharge turn is required on the turn after damage is done, during which no action may be performed."

3. Rest (psychic)
"Rest causes the user to fall asleep, restoring its HP to its maximum amount. The user will then be asleep for two turns, and wake up on the third turn."

4. Heavy Slam (steel)
"Heavy Slam deals varying damage depending on the weight of both the user and the target. The heavier the user is in comparison to its target, the more damage will be inflicted."

Personality:
Mellow/Lighthearted (positive) - Oz truly is a laid-back, optimistic individual. Nothing really seems to ruffle his feathers. Negative comments slide right off his thick hide. If someone is lashing out verbally because they clearly don't want his company, Oz will move on without a second thought. If it happens to be some ribbing, though--or someone just trying to get a reaction, Oz will likely laugh and compliment them on being particularly witty. He's confident in himself, and the words of others' don't set him off. Hard for people to laugh at you if you're laughing at yourself, right?

Protective (positive) - Laughing at himself might be one thing, but picking on others? Not exactly acceptable, in Oz's mind. If he's in the area and happens to notice someone being bullied, you can guarantee he'll idly squeeze his bulk between the victim and the bullies and politely encourage them to search for entertainment elsewhere. He likes lending a helping hand when he can--and it usually doesn't take much effort for him to frighten off rowdy troublemakers. If they want a fight, well, Oz will probably try to talk them out of it... but better they're focused on him instead of whoever he's trying to protect, right? If the victim absolutely doesn't want his help... well, Oz will grudgingly hang back, but he's definitely not going to like it. He can respect someone wanting to defend themselves, but eventually, he's going to step in if things really look bad. He can always apologize later.

Entitled (neutral) - Oz has only ever had to look out for himself. He's having a hard time adjusting his attitude to one acceptable by human standards. Really, he doesn't even think about it. If he sees food and he's hungry? He doesn't see any issue in taking it without paying. He's never had to before! Why shouldn't things be the exact same that they were? When people actually get upset at him over these things, well, Oz does feel pretty guilty that they're riled up over it, but he just doesn't understand why. The good news is that if he's called out on it, he will (abashedly) attempt to make right of the situation, whether that means temporarily working for whatever he's stolen, or figuring out the local currency to pay! It's a habit that he's not going to be able to break easily, so people might have to deal with him... well, taking their stuff for himself without thinking about it. Oz doesn't understand 'ownership', more or less. Everything has been free all of his life, so why do humans feel the need to stamp their mark on everything.

Lazy (negative) - Look, Oz would love to help you, but he's just not feeling it right now. Check back tomorrow. Or next week. To put it simply, he's extraordinary lazy. He loves to sleep and to lounge about, and exerting himself just isn't something he finds fun. Unless he gets some sort of worthwhile benefit out of having to work for something, well... he'll probably put it off forever, or take the easy route. Don't count on him to do you a favor if it's incredibly complicated. On the upside, this seems to apply to physical tasks. He really, really loathes having to exert himself. He actually does enjoy things that mentally challenge him. Having spent all of his life just eating and sleeping, using his brain is something new and interesting.

Stubborn (negative) - When Oz sets his mind on something, it's set. If you try and talk him out of it, that only convinces him more that he's going to do it his way. He isn't aggressive or confrontational about it--he'll simply assure you that you can do your thing, and he's going to do his. Telling him that he's wrong only makes him dig his heels in harder, even if your idea is, in fact, much smarter and better than his! It's a matter of pride for him, and he's stubbornly determined to do it his way if only because he can. Because of this, reasoning with him can be beyond frustrating. For example, he sees no reason to change his lazy ways--or his tendency to stick up for the little guy. Don't even try and talk him out of it.

Likes: Food - Meats and desserts in particular, he adores savory and sugary flavors. Fruits are high up there too. Really though, he isn't picky. Anything he can fit in his mouth is delicious.
Sleeping
People
Relaxing and watching the world go by
Music - Classical/instrumental music. He loves listening to orchestras. He finds it very soothing.
Simplicity

Dislikes: Being hungry, long amounts of physical exertion, petty squabbles, overly complicated situations.

Strengths: He can eat just about anything. No, really. He's never met a meal he didn't like. He's very strong, and has fantastic endurance. Some find his easy-going personality very soothing, and despite his large size, he gets along well with almost anyone. He also floats well in water, hooray!

Weaknesses: Extremely slow, would rather relax than exert himself, doesn't take things very seriously. He tends to be a lover more than a fighter, because honestly, who wants to bother with fighting? He will if he has to, but really. He is not a sprinter--he cannot do anything in extremely fast/strong bursts without exhausting himself.

History:

There was nothing truly exciting or remarkable about the life of a Snorlax, but that had never meant anything to him. There was nothing he loved more than food and sleep, and why would he give that up for anything? He lived in a tiny forest, a forest filled with fruit trees, and so there was no reason for him to ever leave it. He slept, woke, ate, and slept some more. There were trainers that had attempted to capture him before, it was true, but he had thwarted their pokemon with his brute strength. His thick hide kept him safe from most attacks, and there was nothing more frustrating than wasting countless numbers of pokeballs on one target! But, other than the occasional attacks, the Snorlax had no ambition in his life, no care about anyone other than himself. He'd never needed to, before. It was in his nature to be a slothful creature, and he intended to spend the rest of his days as such.

One day, however, he dreamed.

The world was vast and open, and for once, the inevitable heaviness of sleep was not dragging him down into its dark depths. He felt truly awake--truly awake, without the gnawing hunger threatening to shake his being apart. He had never known a life without sleep or the overwhelming desire to eat. He glanced to his side and saw the man standing at his side, his pink hair somehow clinging to the air like mist.

He made an offer to the Snorlax, an offer to never again know hunger and sleep in such an all-consuming manner ever again. An offer to roam the world, to live outside of his small, quiet forest. An offer to learn, to interact, and to finally allow himself to become something more. And, though he surprised himself in doing so, the Snorlax would accept. Honestly, he didn't even really think about the implications. He didn't think at all about what being human would mean. It sounded like something fun!

When he woke, he was surprised to find that he was... much smaller than he had been, dressed in strange, soft material. Scratching at his head, he was surprised (and ridiculously amused), to find how easy it was to push himself up to his feet. He began to wander then, marveling over his new, long legs and when he encountered his first city, he was entirely surprised with how humankind and their civilization had grown.

His affable nature made it easy enough for him to befriend the people living there, and he learned much from them, though eating in moderation was still something he didn't quite manage to master. He even chose a name for himself--Oswald--and decided that, despite his natural inclination to not move and stay stagnant, he had been given too precious a gift. And Oz had never been given anything in his life. He picked himself up and kept going, a lazy, wandering vagrant.

Though trainers just like these humans he was meeting had tried to capture him before, Oz didn't hold any ill will towards them. It was just something that they did. They'd failed, and he'd moved on with his life. He doesn't think humans are bad at all. From what he's seen, they feed their pokemon and give them comfortable places to sleep! It can't be all bad, right? Of course, he had no desire to fight for humans, but some pokemon like that sort of thing.

Oz doesn't really understand that not all pokemon can avoid being captured, like he could. It's never occurred to him that some of them may not want to live with humans, and would much rather remain wild, like he did. Perhaps in time, he'll learn. Perhaps he'll decide to do something about it.

Hello > u> Given the status of your thread, I am here in my staff capacity to provide a crit!

Gonna be focusing on history and personality today o uo ... or rather, tonight OTL If you have any questions following this crit, please don't hesitate to ask!

Personality Overview: Lots of focus in his personality, you definitely had a clear idea of the kind of character you wanted Oswald to be. Here are some of my comments o uo :

Mellow/Lighthearted: Haha, ruffle a snorlax's "feathers" xD; Sorry, the metaphor made me smile. What did you mean by "if someone is lashing because they clearly don't want his company"? Do you mean lashing out...? Sorry, just trying to clarify. He seems like a pretty happy dude o 3o

Protective: This works nicely in conjunction with his mellow personality, that he's protective in such a gentle way, instead of a wrathful or violent way. Out of curiosity, what happens if someone lashes out at him because they don't want his protection, will he help them anyway, or will his mellowness make him walk away?

Assertive: I'm not sure I see this as a neutral trait, the way it's worded. It sounds like it could be interpreted as selfishness rather than assertive, and a little bit of bullying, if he's using his "size and strength to ensure that he gets exactly what he deserves." Essentially, in order for this trait to be neutral, it would probably have to be a more territorial thing? Like he doesn't extend out and harm others, but if pressed, he will defend himself. I'm still a bit unsure about that, but I think that's the closest to sounding "neutral" to which I can direct this trait.

Lazy: Seems fairly straightforward, haha. One question: how does his laziness affect his willingness to step in and protect someone?...If he's that unwilling to do physical work, is he also lazy in terms of time devoted, etc...? Like is it any expenditure of energy he loathes, or simply physical energy? A sudoku puzzle might take intellectual-centric energy while moving furniture a physical energy, and I was just wondering how far his laziness extends. Does it frustrate others in his life?

Stubborn: Definitely straightforward, haha. Not a criticism, but is there any topic in which he's particularly stubborn? Like does he have strong moral values, etc...? Just curious!

Likes: What kind of music and food, especially? o uo Would be awesome to have some detail on that!
Dislikes: Makes sense xD; No qualms here.

Strengths: Floating well in water seems like too much work, to me! ;) Kidding, haha.
Weaknesses: He sounds like he has some serious dietary issues.

History: Typo in the 2nd sentence, should probably say "why would he give that up for anything?" instead of "why would give that up for anything?" Another typo, "countless of pokeballs" was probably supposed to be "countless numbers of pokeballs"? And again, "truly awaken" should probably be "truly awakened" or "truly awake," again.

I like the notion you've created for his desire to become human. Kind of a mellow whim, which suits his personality. Did he have any qualms about Musharna's offer? Like did he worry he would have to eat less apart from being happy he wouldn't feel so hungry all the time? Did he not have any qualms about the trainers who had tried to defeat him? How does he feel about trainers / capturing now, or does he not care?

If you have any questions, lemme know o uo

Hello, hello! Thank you so much for the crit, it made my toes curl in delight. ;w; I'll go through it piece by piece!

Personality:
Mellow/Lighthearted: I'm glad I at least got a smile! xD <3 By lashing out, I meant verbally. Someone lashing out with the rougher side of their tongue, etc etc! Trying to insult him so he'll get lost, so on and so forth. Oz won't take it personally, but he'll respect what they're trying to do.

Protective: I hadn't even considered that, so thank you very much for bringing it up! Gosh, you know, I think he'd be torn! He'd respect what they wanted and step aside, but I feel like he'd sort of hesitantly be lurking close by because he seriously does not want to leave them alone! He understands that some people need to fight their own battles, but I definitely don't think he'd like it. TL;DR, he'd probably have to step in and apologize profusely.

Assertive: Hm... I do think you're right. It started out more neutral in my head, but then... I wonder if I shouldn't just scrap it completely. Territorial might work, but I'm sort of thinking he's just a bit too mellow for that to work. Do you think something like 'Entitled' might work? Like... He's so used to just taking everything for himself that he does it without even thinking? He doesn't mean to upset anyone--he just doesn't see why he can't continue doing what he's always done!

Lazy: Another excellent point--I think his laziness only extends itself to physical activity, actually. That's why he can step into bad situations and try and talk people out of it, rather than resort to any real fighting. I hadn't thought of this, but now that you brought it up... I actually think he might like things that mentally challenge him, because he's never done it before! He's never been dumb, but eating and sleeping always preoccupied all of his thoughts before. xD I do imagine it would be very frustrating for people.

Stubborn: I honestly just think he's stubborn about his laziness, and probably about his thoughts of stepping in for the little guy, etc. I don't think he tolerates any sort of bullying. If one person isn't having fun, you need to stop what you're doing and back up.

Likes: I have added le detail! Was fun to think about. xDD

Thank you for catching my dumb typos in the history section. My brain works faster than my fingers, and when I reread stuff, I must unconsciously add in the missing words or something... All of that is fixed! x__x; Threw in some more detail about his thoughts on becoming human, the trainers, etc. <3

And with that, I think I've tried to update my thread accordingly! Thank you so much again, srsly. <3333

Everything here seems to check out alright. cx I have to say Oz sounds ridiculously adorable. Like a big teddy-bear.. My only real concern is that his neutral trait reads more as a negative than anything. Is there something that might give it a slightly more positive spin to even out his stealing habits?

Mr Mootles

Aw, thank you, Mooty! And thank you for point that out as well. I don't know why neutral traits are so hard for me, haha. I added this line to it, which hopefully makes it a little less negative!

"The good news is that if he's called out on it, he will (abashedly) attempt to make right of the situation, whether that means temporarily working for whatever he's stolen, or figuring out the local currency to pay!"
