Hi, I am doing my first costume/character, and am looking for some help. I kinda have some ideas about my character but they need some refining.
she is kind of like a scientist/explorer, who looks for new species. (I have no Idea what to call my job) intelligent, practical, and well educated, but she has some eccentric beliefs ex: werewolves must exist because there have been so many reports of them
My costume is practical (relatively): I have a bustled skirt just above my knees, a cincher, peasant top, small hat, belt to hold stuff (including gun, never know what you may come across in my line of work) and a backpack of scientific equipment for detecting thing.
If anyone has any suggestions, even just about things I should consider, they are much appreciated. smile

While I love a hiked bustle as much as the next person if you're an explorer contemplate thigh high spats/high boots or other protective leg wear as a scientist test tube bandoleers and elbow length or close gloves maybe welding goggles.
With either of those you'd prefer a safari helm or something less showy than a top hat or fascinator maybe a derby?

It sounds like your character is a biologist or an anthropologist...or even a crypto-zoologist (someone who studies animals that may or may not exist, like werewolves or big foot). Because of that, you could include some weapons or tools that would be good against such creatures on your belt. Maybe even a large knife or machete would work.

Ooh, I like lutra's machete idea. Everybody needs a machete. Equally good at hacking through underbrush and through unruly specimens twisted
Might be good to decide where you're looking for these new species. Your clothes would look different depending on whether you were exploring the Amazon rainforest or the Russian steppes. Or even, perhaps, the backyards of Britain.
You might also consider carrying "evidence" of the species you're tracking - a couple of werewolf fangs, the feathers of exotic birds, a weird-looking bug in a jar.

Oh! on the subject of "specimen" displays I got my hands on a nifty wooden case my boyfriend's Pyrat Rum came in it's a wood cylinder with a sliding door, brass knob, and leather handle. I'm debating whether to make it a lamp or eerie specimen display. I couldn't find any online pictures of it but if you know rum drinkers tell them to save you the case.

OO.. these are all good ideas. I would almost go with a hat with a wide brim to keep the sun out of your eyes, especially when you are out in the field. smile
