1. First thing you are going to want to do after getting your "house" and once Tom Nook the Raccoon says that he is going to wait for you at his shop is to see the town map right at the station.
This map will let you know of the locations of all of the beginning neighbors that you have.
2. Visit all of those neighbors even before seeing Nook. You are going to want to know these locations because part of the "work" that Tom is going to get you to do is see these neighbors for "favors" or to give them stuff.
3. When writing letters, keep it short and sweet, but do not forget to add some "flavor" words.
"Flavor" words include:
Best friend
Wonderful
Great
Neat
Special
4. After the "working for Tom" is finished, find some local fruit and sell it to Tom for 100 bells per piece. This is so that you can buy the shovel that is there for 500 bells.
5. Go for round 2 of fruit picking and then go to the "Wishing well" where you have found Tortimer the Mayor. Ask about the conditions. When it says, "There is a place that is more sad over all the others, go to..." then go to that acre and plant three trees using the shovel and the local fruit.
6. Now is the time to deal with the furniture and the carpet you got from your neighbors. Place them in your house.
7. Go to Nook's store again, sell your old carpet, then buy some stationary.
8. Write to the neighbor that seemed the grumpiest and send with it that radio that Tom said he could never sell at his shop. It is a useless thing anyway, and your grumpy neighbor's mood will lift if you send the radio. Besides, later on in the game, Tom will have a much better and bigger stereo that not only looks awesome, but it will raise your town's status.
9. The Happy Room Academy - an unseen bunch of judges that will grade your interior decorating. Now, at first, do not expect a high score. Especially since your place is so small. But, what you do want to do as early as possible is decide on your initial theme. The best way to do that is by finding what "class" that furniture your kind neighbor gave you goes in.
10. Pay off your initial debt quickly. Its the smallest debt there is and easy to pay off at the post office. And once you have placed your furniture in your place, its time to hit the beach and collect the treasures and sell them to Nook. Eventually, you will have enough to pay off the debt.
11. This game works in actual time. So, an hour in the game is an hour in real time. Its a game that acts like the Internet without having all them fees. Plus, this game gives me a good laugh.
12. Look for the Gold Spot daily - like the daily chance here on Gaia, with your shovel, if you find this gold spot, you will dig up 1000 bells. Pretty sweet, I know. And there is one buried each day.
13. Befriend your neighbors further after your house has been upgraded at least once. This way, they can pawn off their furniture to you and hopefully you will add to your initial set. Anything that you cannot use, you can either sell it to Nook or write to your other neighbors and earn yourself "neighbor" points as I like to call them. The friendlier you are to these animals, the higher your score is going to get and the more animals are going to want to move into your town.
14. This game has two main goals. The first is to get an award winning house fully upgraded all debts paid. And the second is to get a full town. If you take your time with this game, it can be highly rewarding.
