I have linux running on my server, and I like it. Though I would not use it for my laptop computer becaus it is just not good for portability and programs. I use Visual Studio 05, so I need XP

Not good for portability?? What are you talking about? Any Linux distro is MUCH more portable than Windows xd !

Use whatever developer environment you want, but I'm sure there's something just as good or better for linux, since linux is more expert-friendly.

How can a kernel or operating system not be "good" for programs? sweatdrop

I don't get the BSOD at home...
My WindowsXP runs perfectly fine...

the BSOD is commonly made by overworking the OS and hardware.

1. Arch is cool [Love pacman!].
2. Why not? My pc is always at AT least 42c.

If you're stuck having to run Windows (for whatever reason) there are still some Linux-y options open to you.

1. Use putty to connect to a Linux shell account (like the OP was offering).
2. Run Cygwin which is like the opposite of WINE. It's a POSIX compatibility layer for Windows.
3. Run a Linux distro in VirtualBox. VirtualBox is a free virtual machine emulator that will run your emulated OS at nearly full speed.

You can also use VirtualBox the other way too. I have Slackware 12.2 on my laptop but I need to write and test Windows software for my job so I run Windows in VirtualBox and it works great.
