This is the story of what happened to me yesterday, and it freaked me the ******** out. I recently lost my job, so I haven't really been in my wallet for a few weeks, trying to save what little cash I do have. Well, I needed to get something at the store so I went to get my debit card out of my wallet. When I opened it up, there was a white 1 1/2"x1 1/2" sticker stuck to the inside of my wallet. I paid for my stuff then went out to the car, when I got there I pulled the sticker off and held it up. You could see the faint outline of something inside of the sticker, a small solid square in the middle with thinner squares radiating out from it. Looks like a security tag of some sort, and this really worried me. Someone chipped my wallet? Why? How?

From your description it could just be a magnetic theft prevention sticker. It may not be RFID and therefore would not hold any kind of information that could be tracked.

Either way though, is there any way that the sticker could have come off of something you put in your wallet, or could have become attached to your wallet by coming into contact with something else?

If you could post a picture of the sticker with details of the "chip" then that could shed more light on the situation. In the meantime though I would take the paranoid route and remove the sticker and wrap it in foil until you figure out just how the hell it got there. It's probably not anything to worry about in form, but how it got there is the part that may be worrisome.

Well I don't generally put things in my wallet that would have a sticker like that, just my ID, library card, debit card, and pictures of family members. I also haven't been shopping at places that would use them in months. Even when I was working, I mostly just shopped at the local market or the convenience store, money has been too tight for clothes or book shopping. So I have no idea how it got there. I took it out and stuck it on the car (counter productive, I know.) Tomorrow I'll check if it's still there and if so get a pic for you.

Edit: We did go to the bookstore last week but I didn't bring my wallet and my book did not have a tag in it.

That's just really strange. Is there any time that someone could have possibly put something like that in your wallet? Seems like one heck of a task.

Well I have your typical girl wallet that can fit like 20 different cards, it's much too big to fit in my pockets so I keep it in my purse. I try to keep my purse attended at all times but when we do go shopping anywhere that we have to use a cart, I put it in the cart which is not always 100% attended. I also sometimes leave my wallet in the car when I run somewhere.

That's weird though that someone would take the time to stick something like that in your wallet but not just steal the whole thing. And not just put it in there but put it in a place where it was likely to be discovered. It's just plain weird.

Especially since I'm not anyone important. I dunno. Maybe I'll post on CL and see if it's happened to anyone else.

CL? But yeah, that might be a good idea to see if it's happened to anyone else.
