xxxxxxxxxxWelcome to the Junglexxxxxxxxxx

What has you running now? Or have you forgotten how to, forced into a monotonous march to nowhere so long you know nothing else? Perhaps you’ve left nothing but heartbreak in your wake – or are you trying to find an escape from it? The outside world is a cruel thing at times, no doubt. Diverse as it is, there isn’t always a place for everyone: and sadly, you’re part of that “everyone” stuck on the edges.

Or . . . maybe it’s too boring for you, in actuality. Maybe you think you’ve seen it all and that it’s not enough. Mountains, rivers, the beach, the forest, the flatlands, and the human camps that dot the in-between . . . Nothing new that touches the eye until the brightness of it gets you.

How odd. You’ve walked into what appears to be a forest, and yet not a forest. The colors are already aesthetically pleasing somehow, even though it doesn’t seem too different from any other place. But the scents! The sweetness, the spiciness, the mintiness – and others you couldn’t quite classify.

There's a certain flower that catches your eye on the fringe of this ring of sunlight, and it seems to twitch despite there being no wind. Curious, you approach, nostrils flared to take in the honey-sweet scent that seems to draw you in. It's beautiful, large, and in full bloom, and within its mouth you can see the glistening golden goodness. Slowly you begin to dip your head in . . .

Or, at least until someone roughly pushes you away. Surprised and growling with annoyance (you found the honey first!), you turn to find a large green and black-striped femme glaring down upon you.

"Idiot," she says between bared teeth. "Be thankful I arrived; that one can poison you in seconds. And that's the least of your problems here."

xxxxxxxxxxLayers of the Junglexxxxxxxxxx
Perhaps more layers will be discovered with time . . .

The Fringes: This name is given to the edges of the jungle and is the safest area in concern to the other layers. The light is able to filter down with very little problems, and the plant life remains rather normal and mundane. What draws wolves to the fringes are the rather un-mundane scents and sounds that sometimes make their way from within the jungle’s deeper recesses. While it’s easy to become attracted further inside, The Fringes are navigable enough to return to the outside.
xxxxx∴ The Rings of Flowers ~ Not far within the Fringes lies the most obvious source of the intriguing scents. Scattered throughout are oddly circular arrangements of flowers with, through combination, the most attracting smells. Bitter, sweet, spicy, crisp – some with familiar looks, others not so much. The rather vast world of plants in unexplored within the Jungle, and thus they are not given specific names so as to allow the player to implement their own knowledge for their purposes.

The Nesting Area: The Nesting Area is the only portion of the jungle that isn’t permanent, due to the fact that the pack sometimes must move in accordance to outside conditions – usually the cannibals drawing a little too near for alpha’s tastes, though other reasons include wandering human hunters, a rampant disease either affecting prey or plants, or simply to avoid being drowned in lower-land areas during the rainy season, among others. Elaine has mapped out several usual areas wolves relocate to, all within decent proximity to the main river, and there is a warning given one day before the move. Wolves left behind are forced to find their way back, escape the jungle’s clutches, or wander further in . . .

The Umbrage: A wolf will know when he or she has begun to enter The Umbrage because the canopy above has grown so dense that light is hard-pressed to find its way to the land below. Dappled areas are here and there, but most of the area is shaded – not to obscuring lengths until one goes even deeper.

xxxxx∴ The Swamps ~ A large, pristine body of water used to be located somewhere in the Umbrage. Now there only lies a grimy, rather nasty-smelling, and mud-infested realm. The trees hang closely together in suffocating clumps, and the humidity is nearly all-encompassing in the warmer months. If a travelling wolf wakes up one morning to the odd stench of something that passed gas, it is a sure sign that they are near The Swamps, if not already in them. The land is not always solid, as the water is often slow moving enough that the surface tends to accumulate in moss, grime, and whatever else makes it to the top, giving it a similar appearance to the land around it. Like a bayou, small trees do sometimes break through the water’s surface and are often the home of the local wildlife. Be wary of what lies in the water . . .

It has been said that if a wolf on the brink of personal destruction seeks an answer within the Umbrage, the jungle leads them to The Swamps. There, odd visions have been received, sometimes of past loved ones, or memories played back. No-one is quite sure if the phenomena is the work of paranormal activity or of a food-deprived/paranoid mind (or maybe even inhaling too much swamp gas), but the experience never leaves a wolf if it happens, for one reason or another.

The Heart: Completely dark and literally the heart of the jungle. No-one goes out here unless they have a death wish or no longer want to be amongst any of their kind. Some go out there in their final days to finally be one with the jungle. It is said that the dark heart is actually a rip in the veil between our world and the world of the afterlife, and that the apparitions one might see originally came into Telk through that hole.

xxxxx∴ The Cannibals ~
Ah, the bogeymen of the jungle. Not one has been sighted since Elaine’s decision to begin allowing wolves to recruit with her, though she continues to claim that they exist. Very few wolves, she says, will ever see them. Fewer still will ever escape their clutches, for they hunt mercilessly and with precision. And the ones that are granted a deus ex machina and return with their skin in tact? Their minds aren’t quite the same . . .

Elaine’s belief is that the cannibals are housed within The Heart somewhere, though of course she is not about to go and find her evidence. Unsurprisingly, pack members may have used the cannibals as a deterrent for errant pup behavior. Often, if referred to, a wolf may pepper a story with them, letting them play roles like humans do for zombies, vampires, and other creatures. Their level of intelligence is unknown as of now, beyond Elaine’s firm belief in their superb instincts and hunting skills.
