Melody lay by the edge of the lake, her tail and front paw dipped in the water. She yawned, her tail flicking some water into the air before rolling onto her back.
"I'm so bored" she whined, not talking to anyone in particular. She glanced over to her fire sprite companion. Treble hated water, but he refused to stray far from Melody's side. Melody, on the other hand, loved water and never strayed far from it. She couldn't help it, it was natural for her to like water despite being a "fire cat."
"Treble," she whined again. "Find me something interesting to do."

Treble cast a nervous glance in her direction. Melody was at the lake side again, not a place that he wanted to put himself.
"If you'd move away from that darn water I'm sure you could find plenty of fire cats to play with. You're a fire cat, you're not supposed to like water!" A few sparks shot off as he said this last part. He was very passionate about his hatred of water.

Melody sighed, rolling onto her side so that her back was to Treble and she was facing the lake.
"You're such a kill joy, I don't want to leave the water."

Andraste was quiet, abnormally quiet for her normal, noisy self. It wasn't what she wanted, but she had to be quite, she was stalking her "prey." Using the tall grass by the water, she inched closer and closer until she was almost upon him. Shifting her weight, she pounced. I got him she thought. But at the last second, Murtagh shifted to the right, causing Andraste to wind up in the lake. She flicked her tail in annoyance.

"All washed up now kitten" Murtagh said with humor. Silently laughing to himself, Murtagh inched closer knowing Andraste would try at least one more time to tackle him before she would bother going through any pleasantries. Sure enough the second he reached the water line, she spun around and leap. This time, he allowed himself to be caught.

After successfully taking Murtagh down, Andraste was happy. Well happy ignoring the fact that once again he thwarted her first attempt. One of these days I will get him she thought.

Melody sat up, hearing the splash of something falling into the water. She quickly scanned the surface to look for the disturbance. Farther along the edge of the lake she saw what looked like two firecats. One was tan and spotted, the other blue. There seemed to be a scuffle of some sort as the blue one tackled the tan one from the water. Melody got to her feet, tail flicking with excitement. This was something interesting.

Treble noted Melody's changed posture with worry. She'd seen something on the lake. "Now Melody, let's not do anything rash, remember-"

He was cut off by a sudden splash as Melody dove into the lake. She'd reach the two much faster through the water. She swam under the water, feeling it glide past her skin. The cool touch of the water made her feel safe and secure, as though nothing could go wrong. As she neared the shore that the other two were on, she raised her head above the water a bit and swam silently towards the shore. She stopped before getting too close, she was within hearing distance but could still get away if the situation proved unsafe.

Murtagh slipped out from under Andraste, who fell backwards on her rear. Jerk she thought and for good measure she stuck her tongue at him. She waited a few seconds for his teasing comment before she realized his attention was on the water.

Though Murtagh focused his attention on the new comer, he was aware of Andraste coming up beside him. Stepping slightly to the left and into Andraste's path, he forced her to stop getting closer.

Following Murtagh's "suggestion," Andraste stopped walking. Sometimes his over protectiveness really irritated her, but she understood it. She watched the new comer as she studied them in return. Knowing Murtagh would play the tough guy role, she figured it was up to her to start a conversation. "Nice day for a swim, huh?"

"Every day is a nice day for a swim," Melody replied simply, still watching the two cautiously. It was not often she ran into other firecats so near the lake. They didn't seem as though they were dangerous, but one could never be too careful. The male looked as wary of her as she was of him. Internally she scolded herself for being so paranoid.

"My name's Melody. I enjoy the water very much, but don't often see other firecats around here. Or at least not that close to the water, and it's rare that I actually see any swimming." She was sort of rambling, but she didn't know what else to say. She wasn't used to socializing.

Andraste smiled. "Nice to meet you Melody. I am Andraste. And this," she motioned towards her companion, "is Murtagh." She moved to stand next to Murtagh and for once he did not stop her from moving closer. "I have never actually been swimming in this lake before. Unless you count my visit earlier as swimming." Swishing her tail and hitting Murtagh, she added "Which I don't."

Murtagh resisted the urge to roll his eyes at Andraste, but just barely. Only she could switch emotions at the drop of a hat. He gave her thirty minutes before she either charmed her way into this new cat's good graces or drove her away with her naivety. Still, she was usually a good judge of character. Figuring he needed to say something before Andraste started choosing his words for him, he said "Well met, Melody."

Andraste tossed a quick smile at Murtagh. 'Whoever said men cannot be trained, simply did not know how to properly train them' she thought. That smile, and possibly thought, rewarded her with an eye roll. Her knew her well enough to probably guess the line of her thought even if he did not know the exact wording. Returning her attention to melody, she said "We normally swim at the ocean. Have you been swimming there?"

Melody swished her tail under the water, drifting closer to the shore.
"No, I've never been to the beach. I stay here. At the lake. I'm not a big fan of salt, it makes me feel dry. Plus all that sand, it sticks to everything," she whined, scrunching her nose in distaste. She didn't add that there were less fire cats at the lake, something she sort of preferred. Although she got lonely, other fire cats made her nervous.
"So, what brings you two to the lake?"

"It's my birthday and Murtagh promised me that I could go swimming in the lake for once."

"More like she hounded until I gave in to save my sanity" Murtagh said quietly to himself under his breath.

Not even hearing Murtagh, Andraste continued on saying "Normally we swim at the ocean because it's closer. Today is special though, we even have a picnic packed and everything."

Interrupting her before she could continue to rant, Murtagh said "There is plenty of food, if you would care to join us. Is that your sprite?" He asked, nodding in his direction.

"Ooohh a sprite! What fun! Of course you both must join us. Then we can swim! Or perhaps we should swim first and then eat."

Melody looked in the direction that Murtagh pointed. Sure enough, Treble was at the edge of the forest, floating close to a tree. Even though she couldn't make out his face she was sure he was scowling. He hated when she spent excessive time in the water, and liked new fire cats even less. She often insisted that he was anti-social, but he always said he got it from her.

"Yea, that's my sprite, Treble. I'm.. not sure he'd want to join you for a picnic. He dislikes most fire cats, not sure why," she said slowly, trying to decide if they were the right words.

"..But, you're more than welcome to join me in the water," she continued, with a moment's hesitation. She had said she wanted something interesting to do.
