I started college back in the fall, and since then have depsrately wanted to begin attending church again. But there's a few problems. I'm a catholic, and the only catholic church around here is far beyond walking distance.

Are there other christian churches that are similar to the Catholic churches? I'm looking for something much like the solomn masses and such. Do other churches also provide "shelter" 24/7? (By shelter, I mean you can go into the church any time of the day or night and pray.)

A suggestion was made to me to visit the local Episcopalian (sp?) church, because it's like "diet catholisism". The only other churches I've been to are Baptist churches, and I'm not comfortable with their lax masses.

Suggestions?

MAy I ask...why aren't you confortable with Baptist masses? I went to a Baptist mass once, and even as a Pagan, I enjoyed it. I found it pretty fun. Just wondering.

Personally, I don't know any close to Catholicism.

Hmm.. Well, I know that some sects of protestant religoins have solom masses, and even some non-denominational ones do. The best way to find out is to just attend the mass and see what its like. Different churches have different masses.

Though personally, I prefer the rowdy masses. Catholic masses have always bored me to the point of tears.

The only thing I can think of is try your best to find a way to the nearest Catholic church. Set up a meeting with a priest and get a ride there if you can. Then, ask him what he thinks about the whole thing.

First of all, what kind of catholic masses are you accustomed too? There are two basic types, ones that are in English, and others that are in Latin. It has been my experience that the ones in Latin are far more elaborate than the one's in English. So, my first question is, are you a Traditional Roman Catholic with masses in Latin, or are you one of the New Order Roman Catholics with the masses in English?

If you are a Traditional Roman Catholic, than if you can, try to find a Russian or Greek Orthodox church, though they are probably harder to find than the Traditional Roman Catholic Churches.

If you are a New Order Roman Catholic, than you could probably find just about any other church.

The Episcopal church does have mass, and the ritual is similar.

The Lutheran church offers holy communion at least weekly i believe, in both kinds. SOme are high church and some low as far as worship style.

There are many kinds of Orthodix Christian churches. where i used to live there were Greek, Antiochene, Byzantine, Russian, Syrian and others. if you can stand long services you might love these, the pageantry is impressive.

pretty soon now, before easter, the orthodox bishops bless a cross and throw it into a river or lake or ocean, as a blessing for mariners. i saw this done, and it was simple but solemn, and rather moving.

Finally your college should have a Newman society; you should at least go there for fellowship, and maybe they could help with your search too.

episcapalion is pretty damn close(trust, ive been to both that and roman catholic), but the priest running it can also change the feeling it has of solemnity or whatever (like father eddy joking in every sermon).
