This is one of my favorite songs! I keep playing it over and over!!! I have a recording of me singing it somewhere on my computer. ^^''' Well, more like every song. x3 I'll start singing it during classes. How sad am I?

MARK
How do you document real life when real life's getting more like fiction each day?
Headlines - bread-lines blow my mind
And now this deadline "Eviction - or pay"
Rent!

ROGER
How do you write a song when the chords sound wrong,
though they once sounded right and rare? When the notes are sour
Where is the power you once had to ignite the air?

MARK
And we're hungry and frozen

ROGER
Some life that we've chosen

ROGER & MARK
How we gonna pay? How we gonna pay?
How we gonna pay? Last year's rent?

ROGER
How do you start a fire when there's nothing
to burn and it feels like something's stuck in your flue?

MARK
How can you generate heat
When you can't feel your feet?

ROGER & MARK
And they're turning blue!

MARK
You light up a mean blaze

ROGER
With posters -

MARK
And screenplays

ROGER & MARK
How we gonna pay? How we gonna pay?
How we gonna pay? Last year's rent?

COLLINS
How do you stay on your feet when on every street
It's "trick or treat" and tonight it's "trick"
"Welcome back to town" I should lie down
Everything's brown, and uh-oh
I feel sick

MARK
Where is he?

COLLINS
Getting dizzy

ROGER & MARK
How we gonna pay

TENANTS
How we gonna pay
How we gonna pay

ROGER, MARK & TENANTS
Last year's rent

MARK
"The music ignites the night with passionate fire"

ROGER
"The narration crackles and pops with incendiary wit"

MARK
Zoom in as they burn the past to the ground

ROGER & MARK
And feel the heat of the future's glow
How do you leave the past behind
When it keeps finding ways to get to your heart?
It reaches way down deep and tears you inside out
"Til you're torn apart
Rent!

ROGER, MARK & TENANTS
How can you connect in an age
Where strangers, landlords, lovers
Your own blood cells betray!
What binds the fabric together
When the ringing, shifting winds of change
Keep ripping away!

BENNY
Draw a line in the sand
And then make a stand!

ROGER
Use your camera to spar

MARK
Use your guitar

TENANTS
When they act tough - you call their bluff

ROGER & MARK
We're not gonna pay

ROGER, MARK & TENANTS
We're not gonna pay
We're not gonna pay
Last year's rent! This year's rent!
Next year's rent
Rent rent rent rent rent
We're not gonna pay rent!!
'Cause everything is RENT!!!

I love the rock-ish quality of it :3

And the angst! Oh, the anger and angst!

One of my favorite parts, somehow, is when Benny goes "Draw a line in the sand and then make us stand"

And that scene was amazing in the movie with all the fireyness and camera going WHOOOOSH

Hehe, I'm bad at using words to describe things >.<

Butsrsly, it's a really good way to start the show/movie

i like this song too! it's my second fave!

BUT!

OBC: the begining lacks in tempo. it kinda goes off a little at the begining when mark starts to sing, along with the music in the background. but overall, the song is great!

Movie: very computerized music. its very clear & an AWESOME song so rock out to with your air guitar! but i dont like how there's a long a** guitar solo when Collins is getting the s**t beat out of him (even though it was good). & the last note (RENT!!!!) is held SOOO way much longer than the one held in the OBC. but yes, overall the song is awesome & i love rockin' out to it when im pissed or need to let go of some energy heart

You know why the movie version sounds so rockish and clear? They had the person (don't know the name) in charge of producing Green Day's "American Idiot" album help produce the music for the movie. In the special features on the DVD, they said they wanted the music to sound really fresh and clearly rock... and they liked how Green Day's new album sounded, so they were like, "Well, let's get that guy then..."
^_^ I thought it was interesting.

But anyway yeah....

I love almost all of the songs from RENT but I have to say my number one favorite is Good Bye Love... if not that song it would have to be the first finally. I have like all of them memorized though and I sware they always get stuck in my head at the worst of times!

stuck in your head at the worst of times...tell me about it! I had the line "like your dead girlfriend?" stuck in my head for an entire day! It was SO distracting! xd

I love how un the movie, I was waiting for more something "Seasons of love" and then the drums starts, I get amazed! When the song ended I started clapping like a crazy!!!! I definetely wanted to see everything next.

It's a great song, and funny to sing:

"were not gonna paaaaay last year's rent, this year's rent, next year's rent..."

Love the melody and the voices of Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal.
