SHINIGAMI ARCANA: HIEROPHANT [ INBOX NO.5 ]

This journal and the characters' evolutions are frozen due to Ashton and Ashley being admin characters.
Please do not post here.

Q: If you're tenaciously sticking to the timeline, how come the Burschton brothers sport sunglasses? This is Victorian England!
A: As a matter of fact tinted glasses were available by the 18th century.
However, the Burschton brothers' eyeglasses are not called "sunglasses" ICly.
They are special, moderated Shinigami spectacles that allow them to view specific major events
of a person's life in the cinematic records because their work demands efficiency and lucid transition.
Not only do they have to act as the Shinigami postal service but Grim Reapers as well.

Ashton and Ashley Burschton are twin Shinigami siblings that are responsible for collecting, issuing, and reviewing England's Shinigami logs. While they are dubbed "superior" Shinigami by the ladies at the front desks, the duo are truthfully hypercompetent death gods and actually have a basic rank (meaning they still must reap souls). Due to the strenuous work they are required to fulfill, they are not required to adopt human occupations. Because they rarely interact with others much due to their workload, little about them is actually known. The only hints of their personalities are deductions from their reviews. They remain to the Grim Reaper public as enigmas that dutifully complete their tasks. Most Shinigami revere them because they lack enough knowledge to know that they are actually of basic rank.

Ashton is the younger of the Burschton twins and snarks his reviews rather concisely. While he may seem to carry a supercilious demeanor, he is truthfully self-conscious of his rank.

Ashley is the elder of the Burschton twins. His reviews are usually more empathetic and praising than his brother's. He enjoys inserting subtle jokes, though Ashton's are actually funnier (but the latter rarely does them).

Ashton's Death Scythe: Ashton uses Death Scythe gloves that don the appearance of skeletal hands. He claims they are the original reaper's hands, but Ashley disapproves this story. The gloves are capable of grasping a person's entire life story in a single second--therefore the process is much shorter than an average Shinigami's. He is nicknamed "The Snatcher" because of this quick process.

Ashley's Death Scythe: Ashley uses Death Scythe spurred boots that resemble roller blades that are used to form "collection barriers". These barriers are circular and are formed when Ashley skates a circumference around the subject; all people within the barrier have their souls reaped. Like his brother, their impractical Death Scythes are used for a faster collection of cinematic records.

SHINIGAMI OFFICE DISPATCH

TO: MR. BURSCHTON & MR. BURSCHTON
INBOX NO.5: HIEROPHANT

It has come to the attention of the S. Offices that the two of you will need to regard your next Soul Reaping mission. The subject is Teodore Hunt, a young man the age of twenty. Today he is sporting a green suit and a black flat-cap. He inherited his mother's red hair and his father's blue eyes. He is currently unoccupied, for he is still on a job search. The location of the urchin is in Liverpool. Please conduct the matter with utmost proficiency and efficiency. We expect the Shinigami Log to be completed promptly.

- S. Offices.

Ashton tossed the parchment at his brother, who caught it nimbly. The letter was nothing the two had never received before, though they always questioned why their promotion wasn't happening yet. Though Ashton didn't ask it, he knew his brother's thoughts were identical with each Shinigami mission they received. Surely, they worked the hardest of all the Shinigami, but their rank was forever "basic". It wasn't that Ashley felt belittled, rather, Ashton. Ashley himself didn't seem to care much, it didn't really bother him so long as they were of use to the Shinigami Offices. If not them, then who? He took pride in his work, and he was sure that his brother felt the same to a certain extent.

The two abruptly left the Liverpool Shinigami Office, letter still in hand. They were on the search for Teodore now--perhaps he was the key to their promotion--they would never know until he was collected! It was a grotesque process, really. Trailing someone to watch them die, and once they had--reap their souls from their cold, dead bodies. However, it was something Shinigami were damned to do, be it if they enjoyed it or not. Ashton always assumed it was easier if they enjoyed it, but he wasn't altogether certain if he did. Ashley did, no doubt, he was always rather giddy about them.

"Let's finish this then," Ashley suggested, receiving a curt nod in return from Ashton. As expected.

The scouting began on a nearby roof above the Liverpool market, and Ashton struggled to identify Teodore Hunt among the moving crowds until Ashley pointed him out. He wasn't handsome, nor was he ugly; plain, maybe, but nothing that the twins had never seen before. Like the mission stated, he was wearing the attire it described. They couldn't quite see his expression because of the roof's perspective, but it looked something similar to a doleful smile. Ashton adopted the smile as well, because he knew his Death Scythe wouldn't be required if the Liverpool market was Teodore's place of death. It was too crowded--his Death Scythe was not suitable for it. Ashley wouldn't mind anyways, and the two hopped from roof to roof as Teodore journeyed towards the exit.

Here, Ashton frowned. If Teodore left, he would be responsible for the Soul Reaping because of the environment--his boots would be needed there.

He stifled a sigh as the two bounded to the exit.

"Is the bloke going to die yet?" Ashton drawled, adjusting his glasses.

"Shouldn't take long," Ashley remarked.

Indeed, it didn't.

Teodore fell to the ground with a thud when a nearby crate slipped from its stand and smashed his head in. The twins winced at the sizeable gore, and Ashley silently hopped down to the scene before anyone else noticed the body. It didn't seem like anyone would, for the death scene was of a sizeable distance from the market.

The market clock read "3:34 PM", Ashley noted. Raising a gloved, skeletal hand, he reaped.

Familiar, the cinematic records streamed out of Teodore's chest like bursts of photographic ribbons--Teodore's life speeding before him...

Teodore's young face...his teenage mien...and his adult finale....

I am Teodore Hunt. At a young age, I could perform many odd jobs to fill the belly of my siblings. My mother and father were hardworking, kind folk, offering all that they had to us. Our home was a humble one, and little of it was unsatisfactory. I was very happy, I was always very happy. Mother and father made the three of us Hunt children promise never to cry; sadness was a weakness--hope was strength.

The cinematic records displayed a young Teodore, his face dirty from chimney cleaning, though his smile visible through the soot. He waved at the children across the street, hollering something inaudible.

At this, Ashley smiled.

However, mother and father passed when my siblings and I were young. Thankfully, my eldest sister was safely married at the time, though my younger sister was entrusted in my care. Together, she and I scavenged England for dough--any we could muster--the value of it was all the same to us. I was too big to sweep chimneys by now, and my sister's health was not appropriate for it.

I didn't have to wait long.

She too, passed.

Ashton bit his lip, watching as the scene changed to the mourning image of Teodore by the beach. The records skipped to the pinnacle of his life--his adulthood.

Today I am searching the Liverpool market for an appropriate occupation, the ones I've had before were unsteady--but today will be different.

The scene settled to the picture right before Teodore met his untimely fate. His doleful smile, feet exit bound.

Whirrrr...whirrrr....whirrrr....stop.

The cinematic records stopped there, and Ashley clapped his skeletal hands together. Ashton furiously scribbled the review log while the two of them quickly left the scene--careful not to be spotted.
