I've been a Nascar fan since I can remember. I remember watching them race Lumina's and Oldsmoblie's. I remember when pontiac was actually a competator.
And because of this I have watched drivers grow. I've watched sponsors change. I've watched as amazing rookies came in and shook things up. I've seen cars change models. I've cried when hero's passed on.
In short, I've become accustomed to Nascar as it has been for the past dozen years.
But as I grow older, so do the drivers I've watched. Bill Elliot, Rusty Wallace, Dale Jarret, Sterling Marlin and mainly Mark Martin who is looking at his final full season crying . And it's coming to the point where they can no longer race.
And I find myself fearing watching the race differently. I mean I rooted for Martin driving that Foldgers Thunderbird, and after this season he's not going to be there anymore.
Now I don't know if you are a younger fan or older (such as myself) but am I the only way shedding a tear over loosing our veterans?

I've only watched NASCAR for a few years (first ful season I watched was 2002.. or as many of the races that they aired here) but I'm still going to miss the old veterans. I can't really put my finger on it but it shows that they're just a part of the sport and things aren't going to be the same without them. They're a part of the history that makes NASCAR what it is. I mean I can't even imagine seeing someone else than Rusty drive the #2.. it's just going to be weird and empty you know?

I've watched it for as long as I can remember. Well before even Richard Petty retired. I've grown up watching these people race, and I can't help but feel that NASCAR isn't going to be the same without them. Rusty Wallace is retiring this year, Terry Labonte after 2006, Bill Elliott probably soon, and Mark Martin is going to the Truck Series.
It's going to be really different, soon we'll be calling Jeff Gordon a cagey old veteran.

I have tapes of the 1992 and 1994 Atlanta races where Richard Petty (1992) and Harry Gant (1994) had thier last race. I will be sad that my driver Rusty Wallace will retire this year. But there is a time when old stars must make way fro the new.

Rusty has been my favorite driver for so long it isn't even funny. I adore him...he is very intelligent and a really nice guy. I will be so sad to see him go...but he wants to leave while he is still a contendor...he doesn't want to be like Morgen Shepard and always come in at the back of the field when he is 60. I respect that...though I will miss him dearly.

Trust me, I am kinda on the young side (well, maybe older in comparison to a lot of people on this site) and although I have only been watching since 2000 (regularly, that is) I will miss these older drivers...mainly Rusty and Mark (who just made me into a fan when I met him in December...amazingly modest, appreciative guy...) Its getting harder and harder each year to keep up with all the new drivers.

I will miss Rusty. He is not 'my driver' but I like him. He always seemed to have a half way decent attitude.

This is Rusty's last season too...he's been my favorite since I was six! My dad was watching a race and my dad asked my sister and I which was our favorite car. My sister said '24'! (Jeff Gordon, I've never liked him!) And I said '2'. Little did I know I'd still be supporting #2 8 years later!

Even though I think it's sad that the veterans of the sport are starting to drop out I am really getting annoyed that 14 YEAR OLDS are starting to be sponsered! Not in the Cup but soon enough! My father, who is in his mid-40's, has never had a shot to run Cup because back then what really mattered was experience. These new drivers are just coming out of high school and racing because of their families money. The Cup Series is really going downhill, to me and most of my family personally, because of the new-comers who don't show most veterans respect. Most of the retiring drivers nowadays used to at least look up to their veterans.. I think the new generation is just wanting money. Not racing for the passion that sparked the generation before them..
And now I'm done.
