TIBERIUS
favored child of Atë

oh, prince of the lonely throne
how heavy is the wrought iron
crown that sits upon your brow

PostPosted: Wed Jul 13, 2011 5:47 am

Name: Tiberius
Nickname(s): aptly known as ice-prince or even more accurately: a*****e
Age (Appearance Wise): 20~23, he's not quite an adolescent but still young
Age (Actual): 16
Birthday: December 21st

Physical Appearance:
Hair (color and style): dark haired
Eye color: sharp blue or icy gray /THE POSSIBILITIES/
Skin tone and features: slightly tanned, maybe a light facial scar somewhere but idk where <___>
Outfit: Fur and metal, I'd love to see a half fur mantle or cape or collar or metal gauntlet/arm guard or anything. He is based on the main character from his story who ends up as a warrior king of the bitter north. I also really dig this guy's crown/forehead protector thingy [more]... BUT REALLY. EGG YOUR SENSE OF STYLE IS SO GOOD DO WHATEVER YOU WANT W/ HIM.

History: When Tiberius awoke in the Forest, he was taken with it. The Forest smelled ancient and there was something that he couldn't understand in the air. He managed to wander around for several hours before a guardian pushed him, almost dragged him, out of the Forest.

When he stumbled out of the forest a Book Child was there to meet him and teach him about the city. The Child explained that, among other things, he wouldn't be able to see City People for a while. But even when he could see the City People Tiberius was extremely distrustful of them and ended up in the care of an elder Book Child. After a few months, he left the care of the Book Child in the Lower Layer and went to make his own life.

Today he lives in a small, but cozy, house in Sutfirth. It's two stories and has the tiniest backyard that is home to three sunflowers (Marian, Elissa and Bethany, respectively). He runs a small odd-jobs sort of thing. You pay him coin (or cake, or a book, or anything really), he'll take your request whether it's baby-sitting kids or organizing books or catching a stray cat.

Hobbies: practicing swordplay, brooding, contemplating things, solving riddles/puzzles
Favorite Things: adventures, puzzles, cake, sunflowers and warmth.
Hated Things: Fate, Destiny, People of Authority, being wet

Thoughts on the Forest: He's very drawn to the forest, almost unnaturally so. Sometimes he dreams of leaving the City and returning to explore the Forest, but he knows that its highly impossible. Still, a man must have dreams...
Thoughts of Book Children: He's got a pretty cold shoulder towards everyone, but warms to Book Children faster than City People
Thoughts on City People: He's wary of them and initially very distrustful. He's suspicious of their motives, why would they take in book children and take care of them if they don't have some ulterior motive?

Story: King of the Lonely Throne
Favorite type of Ending: A happy one, with marriage and kids and lots of sunshine and all that sparkly-stuff. His favorite ending is "and they lived happily ever after".
Favorite Illustration: [winter]

Dreams: He often dreams about being alone and trapped in a winterland. Almost constant blizzards and a single tree. A black iron crown hangs off one of the branches, coated in ice.

Aloof TIBERIUS THE ICE-QUEEN, JUST TRY TO DEFROST HER, erm, HIM!!
He has a terribly frosty demeanor. Tiberius pushes people away from him or tries to hold them at arm's length. He does not mind being alone (he rather likes his peace and quiet, thank you very much) but, in his opinion, it is better for others to not get involved with him beyond necessity. Aside from the fact that he's horribly anti-social, Tiberius' aloofness is not without reason. Tiberius is well aware of his story and the actions of Therin; he does not want to let those actions repeat.

Caustic acrid words and sharp tongues
He pokes fun at others, insults them, is snarky and sometimes just a downright asshat. Sometimes his language can get rather foul... Child, control your mouth!

Grudging seven coppers, three strawberry cakes or a new story?
Tiberius needs motivation to do things, something to convince him that it's worth getting up from his comfy armchair. Though coin is one motivator, things such as the greater good, duty, and evoking his pride all work. Sometimes all it takes is to pique his interest.

Dependable ⇄ Noblesse Oblige Stop dragging me into all your problems, damnit!
When push comes to shove, he will always keep his word. Tiberius takes responsibility of his actions, however grudgingly, and sees things through to the very end. Often he does things because he feels it is his duty to, whether its because he is bound by relation or contract.

Vengeful I remember you, you bought the last strawberry cake!
Tiberius remembers past wrongs. If you've crossed him, he will remember and extract revenge in most horrendous ways. It takes more than a half-hearted apology to clear your name in his books.

Persistent ⇄ Proud ⇄ Self-Reliant Only weaklings give up.
Loath to give up. Likes to solve things by himself and often too proud to ask for help.

Contemplative and ever now and then, peace and quiet and coffee
Occasionally Tiberius likes his peace and quiet. In free time, he often sinks into deep thought. Normally this involves a book, a riddle or a challenge. Other times he goes around tidying up the house or enjoying afternoon tea while reflecting on life.

KING OF THE LONELY THRONE

Once, a prophetess said, "He who will be king shall inherit the throne that lies in the wastelands and carry a burden heavier than any other man. For he will be given immortality. But gifts do not come without a price and he who will be king must give up something of equal value.

Once there was a King who had two sons. One was the child of the Queen and was the heir to the throne, and the other child? The other child was the son born by the woman the King loved. You see, the King had loved another woman, but he could not marry her. For he was King and he had to do what was right for the country. This child, this b*****d son, was named Therin.

When Therin was a child he asked his mother who and where his father was. She smiled softly, ruffled her child's hair but did not answer. He asked his uncle, who did not reply. He even asked the dog, who barked and licked his face but had no answers. The question haunted him; no one could give Therin an answer.

One day, when the child was playing in a forest, he came upon a cloaked figure. And he asked, "Who is my father?" The cloaked figure said this, "Child, you should not chase destiny." But the child said, "I am not chasing destiny, I want to know who my father is. And I want to know where he is. I will drag him back and make him bow before my mother and beg for forgiveness! I will never forgive the man who makes her cry."

Still, the cloaked figure did not answer his question. But perhaps the boy's cries stirred something within the stranger because they then said, "If you seek out Eltris, prophetess of the Holy, she will answer your questions. But be careful boy."

Therin went home and told his mother that he was going to seek Eltris of the Holy and find out who his father is. And his mother, ever kind and understanding, kissed her son on the forehead and place a pendant over his head. A gift, she said. His uncle gave him a horse and a sword and Therin went to find Eltris.

There were many dangers on the path. And though he didn't know much about swords or war when he left, by the time Therin reached the Temple of the Holy, he was already a well known warrior. It had been three years since Therin left his home.

When he entered the Sacred Sanctuary, the voice of Eltris met him. She said, "I know who you are and why you are here. Turn back now for I have nothing you wish to hear!" And Therin said, "I will not turn back." Eltris, the voice of the Holy, said, "It is not your destiny to hear these words."

Therin had replied then, half feral and fully barbaric, "I do not bow to destiny!"

Eltris had nothing left to say, bested by Therin's resolve. It was with a resolute sigh that she at last said, "If you wish me to speak, then you must part with something of meaning." in a last attempt to steer the foolish boy away.

Therin fingured the amulet hanging on his neck before taking it and tossing to Eltris. It was his mother's last gift to him, and now he knew with a scary certainty that he would never be able to see her or his home again.

"You are the son of Aselgia, of royal blood but your throne shall be one in the highest of mountains. It shall be of ice and iron and you will be king of all that lies at your feet. But I warn you child, that what you seek comes at the greatest cost."

Therin thanked the Holy and left. He was the son of Aselgia, and he would find his father the King.

He made many companions, good friends who traveled with him like Oknir the assassin. Leya the healer. Neicht the warrior, and Ledht the dog. As he was about the cross the border into Aselgia, Oknir said, "Stop Therin. Leave behind your quest and seek peace elsewhere. Come with me to Unmbar for it was the Queen of Aselgia that hired me to kill you. I will not enter this country or walk this path with you." But Therin could not give up and so Oknir left.

They came to a town buried in plague, and Leya said: "Let us stop, Therin, we must help these people." But Therin could not stop. His goal was within sight and he could not stop now. Leya begged but Therin would not stay to help. So it came that Leya left too. Therin reached the threshold of the Palace. Before they entered the Throne Room to meet the King, Neicht had pulled him aside and asked what he intended to do. He reminded Therin that he was a knight sworn to the Holy and he could not condone murder.

Therin patted his friend's shoulder and told him not to worry. But when they entered the Throne Room, Therin did not bow. And when his father did not answer his questions about him or his mother, he sank his sword into his father's chest. Neicht had attacked then, for he was a Knight of the Holy and he could not condone murder let alone the murder of a King. But Therin's sword was quicker, sharper, less merciful than Neicht's.

When Therin left the Castle of Aselgia, it was with only a bloodied sword; Ledht had been killed in the crossfire. He wandered for weeks before meeting Irelle. Irelle was a Blessed, one touched by the Holy, but she did not want this life. So it came that Therin slaughtered a company of Knights to save Irelle and so it came that Irelle traveled with Therin on his journey.

Therin loved Irelle, for she was good and kind but unlike Lyra. She had a warrior's soul and iron resolve and he loved her all the more for this. Irelle of the Sky. Irelle the Blessed. Irelle of the Holy. She was all of this and more, she was Irelle and Therin loved her.

Over time, as the pair traveled over the world until finally reaching the Netherlands. It was a land of merciless snow and ice and winds. They reached the foot of a tall mountain that disappeared into the skies and Irelle had said, "He calls me."

Therin grasped her hand and said, "Then let us go. Together."

But when they reached the top of the mountain it was not the Holy that awaited them, but a palace. Irelle had felt a sense of foreboding and shook her head. She did not think wise to enter the palace. But Therin took her hand, promised to protect her, and said that nothing could be wrong. They entered. It was an empty palace, half buried in ice, but it was grand. Irelle and Therin walked until they reached the throne room and there, they met a woman.

"I am Fate and I welcome you, The One Who Shall Be King. And this," she waved her hand to emphasize the hall and the throne,"is the hall of the True King. But before I can give you your birthright, you must pay my price."

"What, what is it?" Therin had asked. With one finger Fate pointed at Irelle.

"No, no! Anything but her. Anything but Irelle!" Therin had shouted but Fate was unwavering.

"I offer you immortality, I offer you a crown. And this is your fate, your destiny, in front of you. Yet you cannot pay the price? Then you shall not have your destiny!"

At this Therin looked relieved, he did not want to part with Irelle. But Fate's smile grew and she let out a feral laugh.

"Did you think it would be that easy? You have chosen your Fate the moment you entered this place. The Blessed One, she knew, knew that there was something wrong with this palace but you did not listen to her."

Fate raised her hand and a spear of light shot through Irelle. From Irelle's beautiful hair, she pulled a cloak of grand fur and draped it across Therin's shoulders. From Irelle's life blood Fate pulled a crown of Iron and placed it on Therin's head. And from Irelle's lifeless body, she drew a grand sword. Its blade, transparent as ice, was embedded with the iron symbol of Destiny and Fate and Kings.

"Oh poor child," she cooed, "if only you had turned back. If only you had listened to all the people that warned you. But now, you are a slave to destiny and you shall bear this iron crown forever. "

This is the story of Regis, the King of Kings who lives far away in his empty palace. He is immortal and he sees all from his throne. But he was once a human, the favored child of Atë, so do not fear him. He is just and honorable, a fair ruler. But he is alone. Such, is the price of power.

Hokay! Look I'm actually shuffling in to me nosey! 8D *Feels so proud of herself this morning.*

First point of concern:
Book Children can't see City People the first time they enter the city, so it would be difficult for him to be immediately suspicious of them. At most he could be suspicious of the doors opening/closing on their own and various objects moving about. A designated, older book child is usually at the edge of the city to meet and guide them in. Once Tibby has eaten some food from the City and he's slept, he'd be able to see them and respond to them accordingly.

The way your history is written at the moment, indicates that he saw them straight away which doesn't happen. City People can see one another and book children without issue, but it's not that easy for Book Children!

Thoughts on the Forest:
It wouldn't be possible for him to leave the city and enter the forest until he dies, or is about to die. The guardians wouldn't permit him to re-enter it, but he can still be unnaturally drawn to it even if he can't go back.

His Favourite Ending: For some reason I just love this, the fact that the brooding and isolated Book Child could have such a derpy fondness for happy endings is adorable! Although he's a bit of a masochist for preventing himself from achieving it - something to do with male pride perhaps? *Winks*

Personality wise...

Ice-Cold Shoulder:
I would actually switch this to "Aloof" as it's more concise. You can then explain that he deliberately gives people the 'cold shoulder' to distance them from him. This is done both to uphold his reputation and to protect his inner vulnerabilities. However, I would also think about moving his desire for company and fear at exposing himself to the risk of getting hurt to another point if possible, a new one, ideally. That means you can fully explain the Aloof nature as a deliberate front that is also intended to protect him. However, living so long in this manner has ensured that it's almost a natural part of him and the redeeming qualities beneath are hidden.

That frees you up to explain his hidden vulnerability and real desire for company in a new point.

One thing I WOULD avoid is saying that "Being alone doesn't bother him much" because it does. He's deliberately made himself aloof to protect others from approaching him, but not because he wants to be lonely, he seems to be protecting them. I'd advise rewording this in a manner that indicates he accepts that his loneliness is necessary in order to protect himself and those around him.

2. Vengeful:
Would he really get angry over a Strawberry cake? If so, I reserve the right to reserve that for future plots at a later date when you acquire him.

3. Patient:
Makes no sense, yes I can see him being patient but the issue with the kids contradicts his aloof nature above. I'd find a way to provide different examples that avoid this.

4. Grumpy/Grudging
These are actually two different things - "grumpy" is a mood, while "grudging" is an reluctant response to an act you have to perform. Consequently this would need to be cut in two. He needs considerable motivation and nagging because he will only grudgingly do work. Whereas he's grumpy/rude and therefore comes off as snark - he would be renowned for his acid tongue. I would actually just remove the "grumpy/rude" entirely as you've already stated it before and it doesn't need to be reiterated.

5. Heart of Gold etc etc
Use this point to also discuss his hidden vulnerabilities. Put it underneath his aloof demeanour as it'll flow better.

Overall he has the workings of a reasonably balanced character. I assume you've deliberately selected more negative than positive traits to encourage a sense of abrasiveness in his personality, this gives him quite a bit of depth. The addition of the misc facts at the end is also sweet and add just a touch more colour to him!

A million and one thanks Epine! I know it was a bit presumptious of me to ask for crits while he's still u/c but I honestly ran into a wall with where I want to go with Tiberius. It was really hard for me to line up the traits I wanted in him, the character I wanted and then even harder to fill in the gaps. Basically...I just tossed everything up there and decided to make someone else fix it up for me. /turns head in shame

Thanks so much! I'm hitting myself a bit over some of the things you've said because they're so obvious. And will reply fully to your crit. after I clean this boy up.

and yes, he would get mad and start holding a grudge if you repeatedly denied him of his cake. gdi!!

So I think I've thrown his personality in a different light. A big thing for me is that he really doesn't mind being alone. He's probably a tad anti-social and enjoys his alone time. That he pushes people away because he doesn't want to hurt them is debatable. Does he really want to protect people? Or is he just protecting himself?

Tiberius really hates the protagonist in his story and tries everything he can to avoid becoming like him. I wanted that to show through, he's pushing people away mostly because he doesn't want the chance to become like that. But at the same time, his personality is very similar to Therin's in a lot of aspects. Both of them are proud and have a certain sense of entitlement. They hold grudges and don't know when to drop them.

I'm not sure if this is okay within PF, but my idea was that Tiberius hates the protagonist of his story. But he's born from that story and has to accept that. He doesn't go around trying to deny what he is but he tries not to become anymore like Therin.

DOES THAT MAKE ANY SENSE? WEEPS.
