"There is a difference between being a b***h and having a strong character."
I heard this on So You Think You Can Dance: Canada. It really resonated with me, particularly in regards to Gaia. I think "b***h" could be replaced with "a*****e" to make it more gender-neutral, but for sure, I do see the difference when I'm out and about in the forums. I do admire assertive behaviour, but have no time for a bunch of sarcastic, cowardly fools cutting down another user when they make a dumb mistake. I saw a thread in GCD yesterday that just made me cringe, some person posted that they found the little dog in our header to be remarkably like "nyaan-cat" and the next ten people to post, showed their insecurity with their own intelligence, in my opinion. The posts were cringe-worthy, and representative of the worst of the site.
I admire people who stick up for themselves, and act on principle. People who manage to express their strong opinions, and speak up without cutting other people down. And sometimes the strongest people know just when to keep their mouths shut.
Does the quote resonate with you?

I agree with that quote. You can be assertive without being rude!

I know I'm a very opinionated person and at times I don't realize when I'm coming off a bit strong. It's taken some time for me to learn when I should and shouldn't chime in with my two cents. Back when I first joined Gaia, I wasn't afraid to state my opinions on things, even if it did start some sort of an altercation. I mostly just stick to forums like LI now where people are specifically asking for opinions, but even then most of the time I've come to realize that the majority of them won't listen to sense, so I give them my advice and move along.

I have to agree with Lyx and the others that have posted. I appreciate strong, confident people who are not afraid to stand up for themselves, their beliefs and others. I think it is an admirable quality and more people should be like that in my opinion.
However when I read that people "are a b***h and proud," "will tell you like it is" etc just make me angry. If I come to someone for advice I expect honesty, yes but the last thing I need from a so called friend is them tearing me down just so they can give me their opinions. I want to be treated like an equal wherever I am, in real life or on the internet.
It is why I steer clear from GCD and most forums because so many people confuse "opinionated" and just plain rude and ignorant.
