At least Shin hadn't acted like an a** and said something obnoxious about JK's sudden lack of volume. From what it sounded like, the guy had his own brand of sadness to deal with. In a way, it seemed as though Shin was taking it harder at the moment; JK still wasn't quite in the mindset that he would have to eventually look upon Mr. Kaneko as his father, while Shin undoubtedly was already trying to picture the woman who had come over with JK into the mold that his real mother had left behind. Sooner or later, he would have to come to terms with Shin's father being the one to fill his own void in his family life, but for some reason that part of him seemed a bit numb. Perhaps it had just been overshadowed by the obstacle of accepting Shin as an impromptu brother. If that was the case, that part was sure to come sooner or later, now that the pair of them seemed to be settling down, for now.

He chuckled a bit and hoisted his body up into a sitting position. "She's a pretty quick learner, so you might be careful in case she picks up some Japanese and realizes what you're saying one of these days." He grinned as he looked sideways at Shin. "Don't worry; she's pretty easygoing; she only gave me a bad time because she didn't want me to be all embarrassing in front of you guys." He added with a wink,"Like I needed to impress."

When Jack sat himself up, Shin did the same. he was feeling strangely peaceful still, and he wasn't going to push it and risk losing that. he shifted on his butt until he was facing Jack. "Hmm..if she is a quick learner, then I should start teaching you some too. So you can keep up." He determined. Shin found himself smiling faintly as he started to push himself to his feet. Uneasily, he offered his hand down to Jack, to help him up to his feet. We have a TV room in the basement... Father put it in so I could play my video games without disturbing him watching his news and stuff. You...You wanna go play a game?"

JK waved a hand dismissively, though there wasn't much hiding the relief in his voice; if he was going to have half his family speaking Japanese, he wanted to be on top of things so that he would know just what was being said to him. Who knows; he might end up trying to yell at people in Japanese at school just to see the looks on their faces. The thought of angrily yelling 'You have big muscles and are great in bed!' to some idiot and have them think he insulted him would be really funny!

Taking the offered hand, JK stood up and brushed himself off. "Video games, huh? Your dad doesn't.....well, no offense, but he doesn't seem the type to approve of video games. Still, I can maneuver around a controller pretty well; whatcha got?" He turned and followed Shin out of the room, still uneasy at this sudden new alliance, but what better way to show assertiveness than a good old fashioned video game showdown? Hell, he could look forward to doing that with pretty much anybody. Maybe it wouldn't be too terrible here after all.

As Shin led Jack down the stairs to the cellar he gave a small little laugh. Yet at the same time he paused to peer around and make sure his father could not hear him reply. Once they were down in the cellar, with the door closed, he replied.

"Father does not approve of video games. I understand though. He is not one who agree's with things that waste time. He would rather I spent my time reading. However, he also believes I should learn how to manage my own money properly. So he lets me make 'mistakes' like purchasing game systems with my allowance." Smiling some, Shin dragged a beanbag chair, and a video game rocker chair from their places along the wall. He allowed JK to take his pick of the two as he plugged in a game to his system. "Executioner Cyber Knights is the newest one I got." He explained, then sat down for some good old fashioned, beat um up one on one play for the next few hours.

JK nodded as he followed Shin downstairs. "I don't think my Mom wholly likes the idea either, but I told her that I read somewhere that video games help with your hand-eye coordination, and can make teenagers better drivers because of it. You can always tell him that if he ever gets on your case about it." He shrugged mentally at the thought; Mr. Kaneko didn't seem the type to just sit there and be told something. He'd probably end up giving someone a Mr. Miyagi-style brain dusting to the back of the head for 'sass'.

Selecting the beanbag chair, JK flopped down and peered at the beginning graphics scrolling across the screen. "Beat-'em-up game, huh? Alright then..." He grinned at Shin as he reached for a controller. "Let's see what you got!"
