sweatdrop I'm wondering if anyone here knows much about natural treatment for adult ADD/ADHD? My father was recently diagnosed and due to my continued difficulties with school and tendencies towards depression they're considering sending me in for testing.
I'm not opposed to the testing, but I am opposed to going in uniformed about options if it turns out I do have the illness. I don't want to be on drugs if there is another option, especially if there is a chance those drugs (Anti-depressants are my biggest concern) will make the problem worse.
Also because I'm a lacto-vegetarian who avoids dairy (Veggie because of religion, dairy because it hurts my system. Dad also had his gallbladder removed and is celiac, so the dairy is probably a genetic disposition.) I'm kind of bracing myself to be told that I can't keep my diet (which is closely tied to my values) and treat this disease.
Any insight would be appreciated. I'm getting lost in the Interwebz.

My brother has ADHD, I was diagnosed with ADD...but later it was dismissed.
If you have ADHD, your diet is actually pretty beneficial. You're getting a lot more brain-aiding nutrients, especially if your sugar in-take is low. Though you might want to bulk up on your iron and protein intake. I suggest soy proteins, beans and legumes. Also increase your omega-3s, so more nuts and possibly look into supplements.
And ADD/ADHD isn't really a disease. It's more of an altered manner of thinking, and atypical cognitive processes. Resulting in poor focus and hyperactivity. You shouldn't be put on anti-depressants, actually they tend to use stimulants such as Ritalin and Dexedrine to treat these sorts of disorders. These usually have a much lessened effect on a person's mood. There are natural alternatives to these drugs, like Kava Kava. Exercise also tends to help for focus and energy control.

Yeah, you're gonna want to try to keep your breakfast high in protien and low in sugar, and that is entirely possible, even if you're vegan, and not even really hard... as long as you don't mind eating things which may seem more like dinner foods. Learn to make omelets, they're great!

Diet is pretty important when dealing with ADHD. A bit of an issue is eating anything with MSG in it. I too have ADHD, and I find that anything with MSG in it causes more problems for me.
A good place for resources on ADHD information is chadd.org.

its definitely not an illness,
kids with adhd are proven to both daydream more and have more theta brainwaves.
Theta brainwaves makes them more suggestible since its a slower frequency brainwave, meaning both that they can absorb more social behaviors and stuff, and they absorb more information overall.
But adhd the h in adhd is because they get hyper to stimulate themselves scientists think, cuz if you are physically active you get faster brainwaves, and faster brainwaves are beta alpha and gamma, most common wave for most people is beta, beta is more of a work oriented brainwave elss for absorbing information, alpha is a relaxed brainwave a little slower than beta and theta is the slowest of those three, gamma is the fastest which occurs during high intensity sports or the like and sometimes during sleep, and delta is the slowest brainwave only present when asleep unless someones hypnotized.
Studies have also shown daydreaming uses more parts of the brain than when doing 'repititious' tasks, perhaps school simply isnt interesting enough for people with adhd is why they suffer, so i think
combined with more daydreaming they can be more creative, have more fit brains (its used more) and if theres a school designed for students like this that captures their attention then i believe they can excell.
In fact i have above average intelligence (according to iq anyways and stuff) im not a genius or anything though. maybe i would have been if i didnt get those concussions when i was younger and if i wasnt born semi-badly premature crying lol
