The Dunmer glanced back once at Tanna, and shrugged his narrow shoulders. The fact was they needed light, and although her eyes looked moist she wasn't screeching in pain or incapacitated so he wasn't going to concern himself with her complaint. Time to get going, he thought to himself.

"That's fine with me," Velryn said to the Nord. "And oh--a dwarven blade. I haven't seen one of those in a while." He admired the blade (and the way the man was able to heft it one-handed), but didn't dwell on it as he stepped aside so the man could pass him and lead the way through the sewers. The Nord's presence was something of a relief--Velryn trusted that Coraline and Tanna wouldn't be present if they couldn't handle themselves, but if the unexpected took place it wouldn't hurt the situation to have another swordsman present.

The quartet had not been walking for long when the sound of pincers creaking and pointy legs scurrying on stone came to their ears. The odd splash of dirty water accompanied the noises of what could only be crustaceans coming awake as they were disturbed by the presence of the adventurers. As Bale, Velryn, Tanna and Coraline came into a large three-way crossing, and the torches illuminated the space, they would be able to take note of a dozen or more mudcrabs situated on the walkways or perched on half-submerged stairwells that led into the disgusting sewer-waters.

"Fantastic," Velryn said with a faint, sardonic smile as he adjusted his grip on his longsword and eyed a trio of crabs coming his way through the water. Behind them, four were creeping up on Coraline, but they weren't doing anything to conceal their presence and their pincers clacked obnoxiously. As a crab neared Velryn, he swiped at it almost lazily with his sword, and the blow split the crustacean's shell with ease. One down...

The large nosed male, who Coraline expected to be a nord, suggested he take point. And with the large sword he was wielding with one hand and not even struggling, she didn't feel the courage to even speak up to say that it was a good idea he was leading them. A small nod was all about she could give to the intimidating man. He was large and hulkish as he moved towards the barrel of torches and lit one for himself. Coraline instead just stayed close to Velryn instead of taking one for herself, knowing if they were at all separated she would rely on magic to light her way instead of the bulky version the two were resorting to.

She did feel bad for Tanna greatly though. Not only did she really not want to be here, but she could sense that the ring she slipped one was probably a night-eye since the fact that once a flame was about she tore the trinket off and covered her eyes. But since they were tearing up and she wasn't complaining much about it, she thought that she was more tough then she wanted people to believe. Respectable trait. Very self reliant type too. Coraline wanted to comfort her with a small healing spell but knew it wasn't physical damage and figured Tanna's eyes would have readjusted to the light the two torches gave off.

The place was still dank and dark even with the torchlight and Coraline could feel something shivering up her spine like small spiders. As if someone or something was watching her that was not part of the party. Still though, there was an odd feeling she got from the dark that they were being led into a trap. Lured into a small area where they would be ambushed and slaughtered. Like fish in a barrel. But Goblins weren't that smart to plan something like that. Mostly they relied on brute strength and numbers then tactics like that. So she shrugged off the idea and moved along with the group, waiting for the chance to prove her worth.

Soon she could hear the crabs they were sent to abolish closing in on them. She heard groups of them starting to swarm the group from all directions. Velryn spoke in a sardonic tone as he noticed their path would be less dry then it already was down here and the fact that crabs were now starting to swarm them. Taking up her sword from her scabbard, she held the sword sword as if it were a long, and due to her size it might have well been. Though she was no fool when it came to swordplay, even though she wasn't the best at defense with it. Watching Velryn make his move towards a small band, she just barely noticed the ones who were advancing onto her. Lifting her right leg in time the a cheliped just clamped around air. The loud snap of the bone armor the crustaceans wore would have echoed if there hadn't been more starting around.

Spinning on her heel, she used the momentum to clean the claw clear off with her right hand. Putting her foot down and gripping the hilt with both hands, she swung down from her right shoulder down her left, slicing the one crabs armor with almost ease before she took notice to the other three making their way towards her. Loosening her grip, she got ready to duck underneath one of the attacks and jumping to the side as the other came after her. It would have gone nicely it the third didn't use it's own claw as a club and ram it into her side. Though as much as she wanted to yell out, she touched the bright red pincer and let her palm glow a even more bright faded red, using a simple Chocking Grasp, she could feel the Crab's life leave in a quick second as she repealed another pair of claws with her sword, slicing it off as she defended herself. Kneeling on one knee she fought off the last two.

((OoC// l'm leaving the last two alive for the intro to my next post.))

I've Face Mud Crabs Tougher Than- Oh, Wait.

The clicking of pincers and clattering of feet signaled the approach of their quarry. Bale dropped his torch and readied his sword. Two approached him, pincers raised. A swipe of his blade cut clean through their carapaces, spilling guts onto the stone. As another approached, he stabbed downward, piercing it's shell. It gave a slight shriek, then fell silent. He moved forward blade raised, watching as several crabs advanced on him. A downward swing cleaved one in two, and he followed it up with a side-swipe at another. The blow failed to cut the shell, but knocked it aside into a wall.

"and the City Guard is really incapable of dealing with such pathetic creatures? Children in Skyrim play with tougher creatures than these before they can even walk!" He crushed one with his boot, before stabbing another with his blade. The one he had knocked aside righted itself and approached him, where he finished it with a swing of his blade.

Further down the passage, he could hear other noises. Not crabs, but something almost humanoid....

Tanna waited with slight impatience for the group to sort themselves into a suitable formation. When they had all decided where they wanted to be, she wondered what all the fuss had been about. After all Velryn had suggested he take point, only to have the Nord point out that position was best given to him, so those two followed close together, and then Coraline followed close to Velryn so she could benefit from the blanket of light from the torch, rather than carry one herself. So really their ‘formation’ was no different to the huddle they had been in just after coming down the ladder, except for Tanna who choose to follow on the edge of the torches beam, contemplating leaving it altogether so she could slip on her ring again. Obviously she understood that these people with their lack of magical night eye or life detection needed a light source, but for one so used to sneaking, the light didn’t make her feel comfortable. Still she could not complain that fact, so she just adhered to looking around and thus appearing she was dawdling about and not showing the same haste that the others did. After all if she could help it, she would rather not come out of this smelling like expired crab soup and everything else nasty down here, so she would gladly give the more eager the opportunity to fight.

Her well attuned hearing picked up the sound of the clacking before the others seemed to, for her, crawling around in the dark often meant having to listen for foes before you saw them and she didn’t always have a special ring. But she didn’t react, they were only crabs and she didn’t want to give the others a reason to doubt her ditzy personality. When Velryn reacted, she just about see them, their outlines would have been much clearer had she been able to rely on her night eye ring, but she couldn’t, so she could only just pick out that something was moving in the distance. Her ears however were following the sound of scuttling and pincers coming from behind, she was waiting for them to get a little closer before springing her trap, that and again she didn’t want to give away how good her natural perception was. Still, when the crab was just about to n** her with its horrible pincer, she took a startled leap forward and turned on the unruly creature. A fairly weak fire spell left her fingers and struck the creature, killing it instantly, but barely shunting it’s corpse a few inches, thus giving away that it had been a weak conjuration. Not that Tanna was against showing off her magical skills, she just didn’t see the point in wasting mana on crabs.

Since that one was dead she now turned her attention to two more crabs scuttling in her direction, coming from the same submerged stairs the first one had arrived from. She also quickly noticed that the first crab, being slick with sewer water, had left a trail of water from stairs, where the other two currently were, to where it’s corpse now lay. This gave Tanna an idea, who lowered herself to a crouch, which might appear to the others that she intended to inspect the dead crab, not aware of the other two coming her way. But she touched the edge of the water trail with one finger and used a different spell in her arsenal. Electricity from the shock spell conducted along the water slick in less than a second and engulfed the two crabs. Seconds later when the current had finally discharged the two crabs were as dead as the first, and Tanna was sporting a grin, ”heh, this could get fun,” she said quietly but not so anyone close to her wouldn’t hear. Then she rose out of her crouch to see how the others were fairing and recast her shield spell.

((Ooc:// Just so you know, the Goblins should be much further in, once they figure out how so many crabs got into the Market Sewers. In actual fact the group shouldn’t even be aware that Goblins are involved but I couldn’t be bothered to point that out from the start XD))

Velryn kicked another crab, one of the smaller ones, as it came at him fresh from the water. It splashed back into the water and did not resurface. "That'll do it," he said approvingly, in general to the group--Tanna's electrocution, the Nord's simple physical assaults, and Coraline's mixture of speed and spellcraft. "I wonder where it is all these crabs are coming from? As for the guard, they're probably too busy polishing all that fancy gilt on their armour to get down here and earn their pay," he said to the Nord. He rather agreed with the man.

When it seemed no more of the bloodcrazed crustaceans were coming their way, the group was able to progress again. After selecting a route deeper into the sewers, the quartet began to encounter more crabs. These fights went much like the initial one, with the scuttlers being easily dispatched, but the numbers of the creatures were notably increasing. The aggression of the mudcrabs seemed to heighten, as well.

"This is rather ridiculous," Velryn commented. He was ankle-deep in muck, over-warm from his torch and a little sore from a few successful pinches on his calves where the chainmail guards didn't cover, but he didn't seem irritable. "There are so many of them..." He stepped forward across a span of stone that was evidently frequently flooded-over by the grimy sewer waters, leaving behind a terrible residue. The Dunmer hacked and slashed at another pair of mudcrabs while several others swarmed from the water or came from further up the tunnel to accost his comrades. A thought occurred...

"Tanna, Cora," he called, as he prevented a mudcrab from getting too close by spearing it and knocking the body aside, "do you think the crabs could have a nest or somewhat down here, a place where they lay eggs?" They would be the ones with superior knowledge on the subject. He glanced back to see how each one was faring against the snippy horde.

The third one's pincer was cut clean off with one strike yet it was still alive and had another claw to attack with. Reversing her swings direction she cut down into the carapace of the crab. Slicing it almost completely all the way through, a large gash was separating it's eyes to the middle of it's body. It's legs twitched a few last times before the body went completely still. Though that still remained one alive. Out of the four she had dealt with three, almost carelessly, not realizing these beasts could still kill her. Standing up she looked around for the fourth, it was was at the end of the torches' light moving towards her. Protruding her left hand a beam of red tainted magic engorged the small thing. It's life drained away as well. Quickly it's energy was gone and it collapsed on itself.

Spinning around on her heels she watched as everyone's own problems were already dealt with as well. Pulling out a small cloth from one of her pouches she cleaned off the slime on her sword. She didn't sheath it though just in case another group decided to leap onto them. But she didn't feel the same about how the Vel and the Nord did about the city guards. She had her own encounter sometime recently where one intervened and stopped her from attacking a man any more then just a small rock. They were earning their pay in a different way. Murders and keeping the peace seemed more fitting for them instead of this small errand of stopping some mudcrabs. It made sense to subcontract a few mercenaries to stop this problem instead of remove them from more pressing matters.

The guard in her opinion, which wasn't that educated in this matter, was that the guard was already being stretched thin over Cyrodiil. Stopping bandits, thieves and just generally stopping people from breaking the law. Some kind of crustacean over population wasn't high on their list, especially if they were still just limited to the sewers. After removing a crab from her side from the danger equation with one fell swoop she started to ponder about the question Velryn had arisen. lt was rather unusual for crabs to be working in such a swarm and for there to be so many in one concentrated area. ''
Could be that they're just nesting here, like you said. Expanding territory, that sort of thing.'' she didn't really know why there were so many in one concentrated area. This wasn't the usual behavior of Mudcrabs. She was flabbergasted on why they were acting like this. Setting traps, working in numbers and grouping together to go after a common target; moving in packs instead of just attacking randomly. She took a swipe at one who was advancing onto them through the water. Cutting a clean dash through the shell and another swing to cut the front off of another, killing it instantly. She was about to clean her blade again but realized that the amount of encounters they have had would make it useless to try to keep sanitary. Her boots up to her knees were starting to be their bile. She thought of trouble the smell of crab was going to be to get out of the leather.

((OoC// -forgets goblin involvement- sorry l think that was my bad... But yeah l wont mention them unless we see them and l wont make the connection instantly either))

A Bad Case of Crabs

The crabs just kept coming, and they were starting to get past the four-foot blade he was swinging. He felt pincers digging into his ankles, and he stomped and kicked to get them off. Another blow from his blade cleaved one in half, and he stomped on another, crushing it's shell.

"Feh. They expect those fools to actually protect them, yet they can't spare even a few men for this. Absurd. I've fought bouts of indigestion more difficult than this." Each swing of his blade carved open another crab, and he ignored the pain in his legs. None had broken the skin, but those claws were still pretty sharp. "If there's a nest, then we'd better destroy it. Kyne only knows what would happen if the citizens themselves had to deal with such creatures."

His sarcasm and general negative tone weren't just from the fight- he still did not like working with the three Elves. They fought well enough, yes, but they were Elves nonetheless. And Mages at that. He still had no love for magic. He had some alchemical skill, of course, but that was part of living outdoors- being away from cities on a regular basis meant that one had to be able to improvise potions and such.

Watching was suitable conduct, now that the crabs that attempted to flank the group were dispatched. The rest through themselves against the weapons of the two males, and Tanna wasn’t about to get anywhere near that Dwarven Claymore. She made her way closer to the others, but still keeping out of the Nord’s path, and stepping over a few lifeless crabs. While the men were preoccupied, she focused on their next path since it made sense to go the direction the crabs had come from. But then she stopped and paused to think about what Velryn said, realising he can’t have read many books on crustaceans either. She glanced at Coraline when she answered Velryn, but seemed the little altmer was not fully informed either. ”Nesting yes… Crab’s do not make nests, and unfortunately destroying their young would be far easier said than done. Crustaceans lay eggs in aquatic environments with plenty of nutrient, sewer water fits that criteria,” she wrinkled her nose in disgust, but continued, ”when the eggs are left the male species fertilizes them, there can be thousands of eggs to one mother. When they hatch they spend their first years of development in a larvae stage, consuming organic material and other plankton, then they eventually develop into the miniature form of the things you are so expertly hacking up. So you can see the problem, there is a lot of water down here.” Tanna spread her arms wide to emphasize the ‘a lot of water’ part of her speech, then she looked at the others. ”What? It doesn’t hurt to know things.”

Suddenly she looked very thoughtful and turned back to the water, ”perhaps if we had a shock spell powerful enough we could electrify the water, it worked on the big ones. But that would take a lot of magicka… Y’know we should just mention this to the guard when we get out, I am sure they have someone in charge of treating the water down here.” She shrugged as if she wasn’t interested in trying to come up with a way to kill all the little baby crabs in the water, the big ones were bad enough in her opinion. ”The other thing is this water exits the sewers eventually, so most of the larvae would be flushed out into the Nibenay and consumed by predators, unless there is a blockage somewhere…” She knew now that she wasn’t going to be dealing with any blockage of any kind, ew.

((Ooc:// HUZZAH!! Finally those lectures on plankton pays off!! I hate to say it but I know a bit too much about the lifecycles of Crustaceans >< ))

Velryn spitted another crab and flicked his longsword, sending the body crashing against the stone wall; then it splashed into the waters. For a moment, the group seemed to have a reprieve. He gestured at them to slow their pace and turned to face Tanna, one eyebrow raised.

"It doesn't hurt us to know things, but it'll certainly hurt the crabs! Shock the water," he repeated, sounding positive, "or poison it? It might take a lot of energy or mages to sufficiently electrocute the water to deal away with enough of the crab's eggs to make a dent, you're probably right there, Tanna. However, maybe we could work out a toxin, somewhat harmful to the mudcrabs and not other creatures--I don't expect people drink this murk, but I doubt any of us wants to risk pollution, either. We could talk to the guard captain about possible solutions and see if they'll give us some bonus pay for it." After all, if the guard couldn't deal with such a problem, they couldn't expect members of the Mages' and Fighters' Guilds to do it for free.

He seemed to have forgotten about their earlier spat as he turned around and began to pick his way past the slew of crab cadavers littering the walk. For a brief spell it seemed there were no more mudcrab foes to be had, until the faint chittering of crustacean feet on stone began to echo down the passages once more. The quartet emerged from their corridor into a large underground room, notably more spacious than other areas of the sewers they had thus far visited. The smell was especially foul. The sewer line they had been following emptied into a larger trench, several feet wide and running the length of the room before them, blocking further travel. At either end, the waters in the trench disappeared into large grates choked with garbage, and materials Velryn wasn't keen on studying closer.

There were no bridges present: the stone spans that provided access across the trench had been shattered at either end. At the edge of the torchlight on the other side, the smooth stones of the wall seemed to have crumbled away to leave a monsterous hole, poorly supported by rotting wooden beams.

"Alright," Velryn said, slowly. "That seems like something we should check out... if we can get across the trench." From the depths of the trench, a dozen or so angry crabs were beginning to surface and make their way for the stairwells some genius had built along the steep sides. In a few moments, they would be snapping at the ankles and knees of the adventurers.

Coraline actually listened to the long winded speech, which did seem a little over done at this point seeing as at any moment more crabs were flooding in their area to attack them, but she found it educational. She really only knew little of the Mudcrabs. Most of the books they had on them bored her and she could only read the first few pages before closing them and the lectures on wildlife also were tedious to listen to. She really only had herself to blame for not knowing much about them. Even still, as Tanna was explaining them and their social behaviors and living styles, she could feel the wanting to roll up into a ball and fall asleep. Her eyes felt like they were getting heavy and her body felt tired, and a bit sore. And she knew that it wasn't going to be any time soon that she was going to be able to fall asleep with the crabs still flocking to their destination steadily.

The next part of both Velryn's and Tanna's speech made her feel more excited as it involved taking measures against them. To use a large electricity spell, which would have to drain their entire reserves of magicka to pull off. lf they rested afterwards even for a few moments she was sure all three of them would be good enough to continue on without much trouble. A poison treatment did also seem like a good idea, she could agree to that. But she would be afraid that other contaminants in the water would dilute the potential if the concoction wasn't strong enough in the beginning. Not too hard but from what she remembers making a race specific poison takes skill -- skill she doesn't care to possess. She rather just blast them all to Oblivion.

But if Velryn wanted to attempt it she would be willing to contribute any way she could. Mostly by just gathering ingredients from the wild lands. Going to the market for the task would prove dull. At least if she went out gathering she could find a nice little cave to settle in for a few days and get some of her own practicing in without seeming suspicious about disappearing for a few days.

The torch lights revealed where they had to go but with no visible paths to get there. A large pile of garbage. Probably just from the city watch too lazy or busy to clean it out. Nonetheless she pinched her nose at the foul smell. lt was overwhelming and slightly intoxicating. Her head felt slightly light and her ribs were starting to actually ache now. She hadn't taken notice to the crabs for her mind was to preoccupied with how to get to the place Velryn was indicating to.

Dirty Jobs

Bale removed his blade from a crab, listening in on the conversation between the Mages. They were talking about electrocuting or poisoning the water to kill off the crabs. He scoffed at the idea. "Poison would do no good. These sewers drain directly into Lake Rumare, which is also where all the drinking water comes from. There's a chance that you'd poison the water supply trying to eliminate the crabs." He looked across the large trench that they needed to cross. There were no bridges- just twenty feet of raw sewage between them and their goal. He looked for possible alternative routes, but every method that went through his head ended with him taking a swim in the knee-deep muck. There was also a large pile of collective garbage at one end of the trench, which raised an answer to one of the questions posed- flushing the crab larva into the lake.

"If we take that blockage out, it might allow the sewers to flush the crabs out. The problem is actually clearing it out." He didn't particularly like the idea of having to climb down into the water and pry the junk out with his hands, but unless one of the Mages had a solution, that's likely what it would come to.

Active : Water Walking (30 seconds on self)

When people started talking back to her, Tanna just shrugged, ”they were only suggestions, though I have to agree with Bale, creating a toxin who’s long term effects are unknown could end up being worse for everyone.” Though her idea for a chemical solution was different to Velryn’s, she was going to suggest changing the acidity of the water, just enough to kill the crabs, but not too much, so that when it mixed with the water outside, the acidity would be diluted to a safe parameter. However she kept her mouth shut, she was getting the impression this discussion was taking too much time, and would rather be out of here and leaving it to someone else to find a solution. So she just started walking towards their next destination, not bothered by the fact the two men weren’t walking so she was now on point. They were only crabs and she could just electrocute them again.

When she reached the space where the bridge should have been, she paused to look at it, noting that its demise wasn’t caused by long term wear. It had been dismantled by something, but crabs couldn’t do this, and aside from them, who else ever came down here, - something worse than crabs most likely. She didn’t share what she’d found out when the light source got brighter, suggesting the others had followed, she figured they probably wanted to get moving, rather than try and figure out what destroyed the bridge. So the Bosmer walked to the edge of the canal, paused briefly to cast a spell and then took a step down towards the disgusting, slimy looking water. But her foot did not go into the water, it merely rested on the surface, creating a slight ripple, and when she lifted her other foot to complete the step her weight was completely supported by the surface of the water. Nope she wasn’t going to swim in filth to get across anywhere, not when she had a spell to walk on water, and she started to walk across. Not noticing until she was about half way that the lights weren’t following. She turned, ”aren’t you coming?” Her question sounded innocent enough, but really she could guess that she was the only one with such a spell.

((Ooc:// HUZZAH!! Finally a chance to show up people for not having Apprentice level Alteration XD))
