⇒ Appearance
Tanna's Appearance: Tanna, (left picture), comes across as a gentle Bosmer, many seem to think she is very intune with her nature loving side. Tanna generally doesn't wear armor, she dresses light and very practical for all the travels she is supposed to undertake, such as plain sleeveless, buttonless shirts, tan pants and leather boots. Her hair is long and dark brown, she keeps it tied up in a high ponytail to keep it out of her eyes, though she does have bangs which get into her face. Her most natural distinguishing feature is her eyes, which are a light voilet in colour, unfortunately for her it was another reason she was choosen by the Dunmer Lord she worked for - he liked unique features. Her other noticible feature, would be the tattoo she got from the Dunmer lands of Morrowind, also curtesy of the Lord. The first one on her face, was the symbol he emblazed on all his slaves faces, so they would constantly be reminded of who owned them. Fortunately not all Dunmer did this too their slaves, so in Cyrodill she can pretend she got the tattoos in Valenwood. The second tattoo on her shoulder, a tribal style claw mark, she got after coming to Cyrodill to match the tribal style tattoo on her face so people would ask less questions.
Marilien's Appearance: Marilien, (right picture), is a ruthless assassin and dresses like one too. She keeps her face and distinguishing features covered at all times, and never reveals them to anyone and her concealment is very effective. She always wears a deep hood to conceal her face from view, however, if she must get close to people she will cover the lower part of her face just to be safe with a scarf or muffler. She always wears light armour, but doesn't completely cover her body in it. At most she wears a cuirass to protect the vital parts, boots to protect her feet from fall damage or traps, and gloves to reinforce her wrists and protect her hands. She always wears a long floor length cloth cloak to hide her body and equipment, as well as shrug off the cold. The hood isn't attached to the cloak, though it looks like it, just incase the cloak got snagged and ripped off. She'll wear cloth pants on her legs, or leather ones, but she has taken a fancy to a split side long skirt for the time being, so it covers her but allows a great deal of movement. Marilien comes across as a very imposing person, despite her size, but don't under estimate her, she's very capable of causing damage even if she is shorter than most folk.
⇒ Personality
Tanna's Personality: For a start everything about Tanna is a very convincing act. Tanna is best associated with the Mages Guild as a mediocre mage who travels and gets lost a lot. Tanna pretends to be a sickly sweet girl, caring and understanding, everything that would make her inoffensive to normal folk so they would never guess who she really is. She also pretends to be extremely clumsy, which is quite easy to pull off for someone with an Acrobatics skill. She'll pull off clumsy acts periodically, however she isn't so committed the act to risk getting covered in dirt or anything worse - fortunately no one seems to notice her bouts of finesse. Tanna frequents the Arcane University and the various guilds to study or purchase ingredients for alchemy, which prove useful to her other activities. She's very good at deceiving people, she has to be or she wouldn't risk showing her face in the civilian world. Tanna will occasionally do work for the Mages Guild, but she prefers her other activities.
Marilien's Personality: Marilien isn't a fake personality - she is the truest character - but she is always cast in shadow. Marilien will never talk much about herself - in fact you'll be lucky to get a name out of her if she doesn't to give it. She keeps herself concealed at all times, either by hiding in the shadows or by constantly concealing her face. She is extremely paranoid about being associated with a past life, or with her other alias, Tanna. As such she is very good at keeping the two alias's separate. Marilien is a very cold and ruthless individual. She doesn't much like getting close to people, so she doesn't have friends so speak, though she may come to trust, in her own way, certain individuals but only as field partners, she isn't known to get personal with someone ever. Marilien has a warped sense of justice, and a large god complex. The two combined means she tends to go after sinners, she decides who is evil, even for the smallest of reasons and then usually kills them, though she has been known to punish as well. She's something of a extreme righteous/vengeful person, though her judgements are very clouded by all the anger she feels. She could go one of two ways; either descend into a mad psychopathic killer or let go of the rage and be a punisher of evil. Marilien is also very unpredictable, she reacts in the funniest of ways sometimes, taking things in humour rather than getting angry like most people would expect. Also in the same respect she'll react poorly to things that were supposed to be responded to with humour.
⇒ History
Brief: Marilien/Tanna was born in Valenwood but was abducted at a young age by Dunmer slavers who took her back to Morrowind. They kept, trained and above all tortured her until the age of ten when she was sold to a Dunmer lord. He had his personal henchmen/assassins train her and she eventually became his favourite killer. Before her twenty second year a Dark Brotherhood agent came from Cyrodiil to Morrowind to kill a list of Dunmer for another Dunmer back in Cyrodiil. She agreed to help him in exchange for help getting to Cyrodiil but on the way to Cyrodiil he revealed he had used her and now needed to kill her to cover it up so the Brotherhood would think he completed the task on his own. She surprised and killed him and then worked incognito to forward her plans to punish corruption and evil (her kind of sick, tormented, revenge). Eventually she formed the alibi/refuge in society – Tanna Felnaras and gave herself the name Marilien Amarth when she worked undercover as an assassin. A year or so goes by and she becomes recognised by the Brotherhood who wish to recruit her but she evades them and then messes up one of their jobs out of spite. Then she is cornered by the Listener who asks her if she wants to join or die. She chooses join.
Full Story: Marilien/Tanna was born in the Bosmer homeland of Valenwood and that is about all she remembers. She was abducted from her home at a fairly young age and thus has very few memories of home and what few she had were gradually beaten out of her over the years in Morrowind - including her birth name. The Dunmers that took her called her Nell – a very unflattering name in her opinion but then she learned that the Dunmer could be just as horrible. Being so young she was mostly trained to perform simple tasks or humour them but given her age she wasn't able to comprehend verbal explanations. But the Dunmers found a way around that and trained her like someone might train a dog using simple commands associated to the correct action and if she failed to do perform they would torture her or withhold food. She soon learned what was acceptable and what wasn’t, but the experience was traumatic and she grew up very hateful towards her captors and there wasn't much the Bosmer child could do about it. However as she grew she began to show unique talents for escaping but it was never very long before she was caught and beaten again – because Morrowind was so hostile and its roads so unfamiliar she often got lost or ran into trouble before she could get very far. Eventually though she reached the age that the slavers could make an acceptable profit (around the age of ten) and ‘Nell’ was sold to a Dunmer lord.
The Dunmer lord turned out to be crueller than the slavers but it was because of him that ‘Nell’ gained the skills that would put her on the path of an assassin. The lord was an arrogant and ambitious man with no patience for negotiation, if someone stood in his way he wanted them gone but he also had to use discretion. That’s where Nell, another Bosmer and an Argonian came in. She was first trained by the other two to drop and retrieve packages or documents without being seen. But she had to learn fast or risk being taken out - her Lord wasn’t the only one who had personal henchmen. Fortunately the latent skill she had already begun showing to the slavers came in handy and she lived to tell the tale about her missions (unlike others before her). Her elders began to teach her the moves of an assassin, in particular the proper use of blades and acrobatics. Since they found she had a slick tongue for lying she was put to work infiltrating the nobles to administer poisons (she was now expected to create herself) or lead them astray and slice their throat open. She enjoyed the power and thrill of being assassin but she still had to put up with returning to endure more abuse and the ranting of the paranoid lord. In this period of her life her hate began to turn to malevolence, she began to hate and despise more than those who directly harmed her.
She worked for the lord for nearly twelve years, she became his favourite killer while she steadily grew more resentful of sinners and their crimes. Even the slightest taint in their actions disgusted her beyond words, she wanted nothing more than to kill the lot of them but she also wanted to live and her chances of killing every last Dunmer noble and surviving were slim. Nell was not stupid, she could bide her time. A lucky break came from an Imperial who had been sent to kill her Dunmer lord. He claimed to have been sent from Cyrodiil on Dark Brotherhood business. Apparently a Dunmer who had recently relocated to Cyrodiil wished to tie up loose ends with some old ‘business’ partners. The Imperial told her briefly of the Brotherhood and how she could leave Morrowind and join them in Cyrodiil however she only liked the leaving Morrowind part and they agreed on that. First they he took care of the other dark elves on his list before she slipped home and took care of her lord right under the noses of her former mentors. Nothing else can really be said about the hit other than she enjoyed a deep satisfaction in ending her tormenter’s life. With that done she left Morrowind with the Imperial assassin.
The journey back was uneventful apart from the Imperial becoming quiet and increasingly shifty this put Marilien on edge but she maintained a calm exterior. She could tell he was plotting something but she was only sure of one thing – she wasn’t going to like it. That was true, as they crossed the border in to Cyrodiil the Imperial betrayed her. Fortunately she was prepared for this outcome but first desired to know his reason (just for her personal record) and being a mouthy fellow he was all too happy to enlighten her. The truth was he was a grunt from the Dark Brotherhood, maybe even sent on that difficult mission to procure his death and not have to clean up afterwards – but that was his speculation. He was however too fond of living and that is why he broke the rules and sought an outsiders assistance and then his plan was to kill her to cover it up. That moment was more or less when she decided she’d had enough with people full stop, everyone was out to ******** everyone else over and she loathed that. But she felt she was better than them, aware of their evil and she could end them – starting with him. The whole time she had worked with the other assassin she had never once revealed to him her magical abilities and her reason was so she’d have something up her sleeve for a moment just like this one. She hit him in the chest with a Destruction spell he was not prepared for, then calling on the blessing of The Shadow she vanished and reappeared behind him, pushing her dagger into his heart. Fortunately she left no trail that could be traced and the Brotherhood were none the wiser about who killed their agent or maybe he was right that they didn’t see a use for him anymore and thought whoever murdered him had done them a favour. After that kill Nell no longer existed, she disappeared into Cyrodiil’s underbelly always working under a different name.
She spent a little over a year working incognito and only taking jobs when she needed the money to get by. She wanted to be as far away from the clutches of society as possible or kill them. She started with the former while in the back of her mind she plotted what she was going to do about all the torment and corruption and of course she wasn’t going to admit she was developing a god complex by this point. She was starting to believe she was better than the corrupted and even though murder was probably the biggest sin it was right of her to do it to remove their evil. They are vermin and she is better than that. But she could trust no one, she had no contacts, very little money and very little knowledge on the people of Cyrodiil. So she spent the year rectifying all the little issues in plan, first she needed better weapons and she’d heard of the Ayleid ruins containing powerful treasures. She was forced to work with a couple of mercenary/treasure hunters just as a precaution, she’d read and heard that the ruins could be filled with dangerous creatures and she wasn’t willing to risk dying just yet. She signed up with a fake name, told them she was a wandering explorer and kept her face covered the entire time, they weren’t the brainiest of people so her odd behaviour and story didn’t seem to bother them so long as she would be useful. However the treasure hunt was rather fruitless. They found some interesting artefacts the mercenaries were convinced they might be able to flog to the University for a high price but as for weapons all they found was a broken dagger. She kept the dagger, which the others weren’t bothered about and she took her advanced payment from them – with only a little force required. She then took both the money and the broken weapon to an Argonian smith and commissioned him to replicate the dagger twice using steel. When the work was completed she handed over his payment, one of his creations across the throat. She never planned to kill him, but then he spoke of continuing to replicate the blade because he was sure there was a big profit in it for him and that wasn’t something she wanted the greedy b*****d to do.
After the creation of the weapons she started to put everything else into place. First she remerged into societies eyes with the intention of joining the Mages Guild to give her access to ingredients for alchemy, new spells and research. She created a separate identity for herself and began acting as Tanna Felnaras the sweet but sometimes clumsy young Bosmer mage. She now had an alibi and a place to hide if things got dangerous. Second to this she gave her true identity a new name that could become recognised, but no one would have a face to that name which was Marilien Amarth. As Tanna she could blend in with society and as Marilien she could punish everyone with the slightest corruption. This was how she intended to carry out her revenge for her tormented life. Unlike Tanna, Marilien was less easily known unless you had an ear to the ground or were staring at the point of her daggers. The Dark Brotherhood fit the first description and instantly took an interest in recruiting Marilien. Of course Marilien had a problem with that thought, ever since her run in with the Imperial she wasn’t fond of the Brotherhood and since then she had learned some of the stories about their cultist traditions. They were corrupted but – if the stories were true – powerful so at first Marilien evaded their agents which forced them to have to keep tracking her down again and again. Eventually though Marilien grew cocky and to send a message that she felt better than them she crashed one of their hits and turned it messy for the Brotherhood. After that she was tracked down and cornered by Zeh’Rheel who offered her the choice of join or die. She could not deny he had bested her escape, she weighed her options if they were to fight but then decided it best to accept and join (for now). Since joining the Dark Brotherhood she hasn’t become any more forgiving of the traditions or the religious crap which she refuses to believe in. However she has come to appreciate some of the perks of being part of the organisation so her involvement with them might not be so horrible so long as she can keep punishing the corrupted and staying away from the filthy cultists in the Brotherhood.
